The Branbury gets a Cable Railing Upgade
Thank you to & @HighCountryMetalWorks for collaborating with DEVLINE RAIL on this one.
It has been quite a project. Thank you for the challenge Branbury team! We know you will love your new stainless cable railing for decades to come.
This project came about because of life safety issues caused by steel deterioration and to remedy this we replaced the railings with stainless posts and cable, galvanized treads and much thicker stringers for the stairs.

    For looks the 1x19 is definitely better, however for load bearing applications you got to be careful. If crimps are used to secure the cable ends the 7x7 can handle higher load. The aluminum crimp flows in between the strands to provide mechanical lock and in 7x7 configuration there is more room for crimp to deform into.

    I just finished utilizing these awesome fittings! For 4x4's, you have to be a little creative. I drilled through the 4x4's with a 1/4" drill bit using a template I created from some scrap trim coil. (a hole punch goes through aluminum easily) . Be careful to align the holes so they don't angle through the other side strangely. To keep from blowing out the other side, I clamped a scrap piece of scrap wood on the opposite side of drilling. I also used a speed square to index the opposite side and used my template to mark and drill from the other side since my drill bit was shorter. This also allowed the two holes to mert and keep even spacing. Next, measure the depth you want to countersink the nut and washer. Countersink the nut and washer enough to allow the crimping surface to protrude through the other side of the 4x4. I added a larger washer and used the 1" paddle pit to allow for a deep well socket to tighten up the fitting. I crimped the fitting onto one end and fed it thought all the 4x4's posts to the end and poked it through the other side of the 4x4. I placed the washer and nut on. Don't run the nut down on the threads as this is what allows you to take the slack up. Next, I went to the other end and with the fitting already mounted in the 4x4, measured my cable and cut it. Then I inserted the cable into the fitting pulling tight and taking up all the slack. Crimp, then tighten the nuts for proper tension! For the large holes, I used a 1" dowel and cut plugs to fill in over the hole. For crimping, I took a 18" bolt cutter and ground a flat spot on the jaws to crimp. I tried a round hole, but liked the holding power of the flat crimp.

      Bryan Nykerk a 1/4” fitting needs to be swaged down to about .18-.19”. Usually with hand Swage tools that will be the smallest hole. Thank you!

    Can you show me how to "piece" on the three pronged claw?

    • @luxmaterials2402
      @luxmaterials2402 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! it helps if you have a clean cut to begin with. you slide the 3 prong claw with the long portions of the prongs first and then what I do is I squeeze the three together around the cable. this stretches the ring that holds the prongs together. I then push the 3 prong claw the rest of the way over the cable. again it helps if you start with a clean cut. let me know if this helps! thank you!
