TM40 Install Part 2
มุมมอง 7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Installation of the Mikuni TM40-6 carburetor. After The install, I finally was able to take a proper test ride a few days later. The difference is amazing! The bike accelerates with a hold on to the grips power that it didn’t have before. I hit 70mph in 4th gear in no time and it just wanted to keep on giving. The Procycle pre-setup was spot on and the only thing I have had to do so far is a mi...

    I am doing this mod on my Dr650se but I already have the carb do you know the jet settings size Procycle used. I already have done air box mod and exhaust, I am at sea level just curious to what jets they start with?

    What air filter and air box mods

    • @duelmen3
      @duelmen3 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I pulled the snorkel out and cut two 1" holes in the top of the box when I first did the Procycle mods to the original carb. When I installed the TM40, I went to a Twin Air air filter for better breathability. It made a big difference in letting the engine breath. Also, I run CR9E spark plugs which are a little hotter plug. They give a better burn on ignition. The misconception when saying the plug is hotter, it really means that the spark lasts just a bit longer than the CR10E, giving a better burn of the fuel in the chamber.

    Does your bike have a rebuilt title now?

    • @duelmen3
      @duelmen3 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, it has a Salvage Title. The cost of repair by a shop plus the amount (cost) of replacement parts was more than the considered value of the bike. I bought it back from the insurance and received the overage amount they decided on as payment. There is nothing wrong with the bike as all damage was cosmetic dings. I don't plan on ever selling the DR, so it doesn't matter to me that it has a salvage title.

    I just purchased the new Makuni TM42-6 Flatside Pumper Carb Kit. How much of the airbox did you have to drill out? Did you remove the airbox snorkel? Thanks 👍

    • @duelmen3
      @duelmen3 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I first tried the mods to the original BST Carb and took out the snorkel and cut two 1" diameter holes in the top of the breather box. I have not cut any more holes in the box, but I have switched to a TwinAir intake filter which provides a better airflow into the carb. Hope this helps!

    Hello. Just got my TM40, installing it next week. What jetting are you using?

    • @duelmen3
      @duelmen3 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello @simenthorvaldsen, I will need to look through my old notes about what jetting was used. I bought my TM40 from Procycle pre set up for my bike and what exhaust it has plus the altitude range I ride in. After initial start up and and about a 10 mile ride, I only had to make a small adjustment to the idle speed.

  • @dogfeathers5646
    @dogfeathers5646 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I can see why you are having so much trouble going downhill. Keep it -in gear- and do NOT pull in the clutch! Compression is your friend in this situation, if the engine is revving too high, feather the rear brake to slow the engine down. Keep the wheels turning, but under control. Over braking just puts you in a skid and you lose your line. Do not coast down steep hills or you will end up going way too fast really quickly, ……as you found out! Glad you did not crash just before the “oh shoot” point! Now un-pucker and take that hill again.

  • @calebsom5517
    @calebsom5517 ปีที่แล้ว

    did you have to put the procycle jet kit in the new carb?

    • @duelmen3
      @duelmen3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bought the TM40 from Procycle. They ask questions about your bike set up, and then set up the jetting based on your bike and where you ride ( altitude). Other than a small adjustment to the idle speed, I have not had to adjust anything on the TM40. The bike starts right up all year and runs great in hot or cold weather. I ride in an area that goes from around 500ft to 6000ft and I dont feel any difference in power.

      Not sure what you are referring to for 3 options. As for the TM40, I emailed with Procycle about my bike and it’s mods and they set up the carb up before shipping based on what I told them. I have not had to change any of the settings on the carb since install other than a very minor turn of the low speed idle screw after the initial first ride and warm up. Hope this answers your question. Thanks, Gary

    Thanks for the video. Plan on installing the TM42 this weekend. What is the magnetic light you were using? The extra hoses, did you just let them hang down below or did you tie them up some how? How easy was it to grease / oil the throttle cables?

    • @duelmen3
      @duelmen3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Matt! The light is a Braun 390 Lumen from Harbor Freight. It is an awesome little light. You can find it on sale all the time for about $24 As for extra hoses, if you are referring to the smog hoses, I eliminated that system. If you mean the hoses from the carb, I routed them down the back of the cases and then shortened them a bit. I bought my TM40 as a kit from Procycle and it came with low friction throttle cables. They slide super easy with no binding. I have 2” risers on my bars and they do not interfere with operation at all. Good luck and get ready to be amazed at how much better your throttle response and overall performance has become.

      All depends on where you live. If you live in the LA Basin, then yes, this could be done as a one day ride. It is near Cuddyback Lake. The turn off is about 13 miles north of Kramer Junction on Highway 395. From there it's about a 22 mile ride in to the memorial.

    I had a TM40 on my previous DR650. Bought it from ProCycle and they set it up for me, and man it was perfect. The only thing I adjusted was the accelerator pump activation point. Otherwise it was perfect, the bike ran so nicely, I loved it! I live in Texas and haul my bike to Colorado twice a year for mountain trail riding, and the carb did great with just minor jetting changes and needle position change for the altitude. I've since sold that DR650, it was first one that I bought in '05, and I wanted a newer one so now I have a '21 model. Haven't modded it much yet, but working on it.

Hook up the pushme pull you throttle cables at the carb, then at the throttle. Makes the hook up easier then fine tune the adjusters. Good luck and enjoy that new carb! Let me know how it goes 👍🏻

    Glad you came out ok on the crash. I’m on the fence about the TM40 and pipe for my DR650. Curious,what made your decision and why on choosing the pipe and silencer combo? Thx again

    • @duelmen3
      @duelmen3 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Robert, I had done the standard mods to the original carb and I bought the tail end of the exhaust first. Things were much improved, but not where I wanted it to be. I come from a 1970's 2-stroke background and I want that turn the throttle power band in my mind. I also did the grind of the header flange and didn't really feel any improvement from that mod. Coming from a mechanical background, I know the pumper carbs are much better at fuel/power delivery, but the cost was a big consideration. I actually had ben putting $$ aside to buy the carb. I emailed with Procycle about my riding style and current / potential mods and they set up the carb pre-delivery. I have not had any problems with the carb set-up and am very happy with the performance gains. I turn the throttle and the front will lift right up if I want it to. It never had that quick of a response before. I bought the header pipe after Christmas and it helped to smooth out the powerband even more, making the exhaust even sound about as quiet as the original until you twist the throttle. The biggest reason I chose the combinations I did, was they all have been set up to work together by Procycle and there is little to no maintenance involved, I didn't want to repack the pipe every now and then... Gary

    OMG …. I live in New England and at the beginning of your video I was where all the desolate riding area was then at the end you said the. Mojave desert. Damm …. if TH-cam ever existed back in the 1970’s when I first started riding off road I would now be living out THAT way. I never in my 68 years of living knew there was so much FANTASTIC off road riding out that way. I just got back to offroad riding since stopping in 2005 to enjoy Harley street riding but late last year I went to a bike night near me. There were a few of the newer dual purpose bikes there and I started talking to them about where they rode. Found out there are quite a few what they call Class 6 ( dirt roads ) in my general area. So I ended up buying a 2021 DR-650 and joined some FB groups where I saw your video ( now a subscriber ). I am flabbergasted at how HUGE the riding area you were in. It looks bigger than the whole State of MA where I live. We have crap for mileage to LEGALLY ride in here and almost all of it is 100 miles away on the Western part of MA. So mostly I live through the videos of others like yourself out West and think of all the fun …. Thanks …

      Thanks, Rob! I grew up riding in the 70’s as well (teen years for me) out in that desert area. The are hundreds and hundreds of miles of road and trail out in the desert. I live in Northern California now and it was an 8 1/2 hr drive for me to get there. Where I live, I can ride out my door and go riding in the mountains on great Forest Service roads. There is also an OHV ( Off Highway Vehicle Park) with over 220 miles of trail and roads about 20 minutes from my front door. Lots of great riding out here in the West. Enjoy the Mighty DR and safe travels!

      On my way home from the first full day ride with the TM40, I had a car run a red light and turn in front of me. I went down on the pavement at 40mph and slid for a nice long way… My DR ended up being totaled by the insurance company and I bought it back and have since rebuilt it. Most damage was superficial scratches, but there was some items tweaked that took some time to replace. I finally got a few more rides in last Fall and yes, there is a big difference between the stock carb, with the standard mods, and the TM40. The front end pulls up with little effort and I have a 5.3 Acerbis tank! The mpg seems to be better as well. I really like that it will chug along at idle or small amounts of throttle input at slow speed maneuvering. The power comes on instantly and will even come up fast when in the wrong gear, lower speed - too high a gear. I feel it was money well spent on my DR. I also emailed with Procycle about my riding style, weight (me) and mods I already had and was planning to add and let them set it up. I have not made any adjustments to the carb and have not felt the need to.

The acceleration response has no hesitation and the mpg has gone up. I dont keep track of mpg other than I know I am going farther on a tank of fuel. I recently bought the Procycle header pipe to go with the SS1 exhaust I bought last year. Not too much different than the stock header with the weld ground off, but it is a bit quieter and has less decel pop. Enjoy your Mighty DR!

      @@pyle9797 So far, the tuning has been minimal. I have the Procycle SS1 exhaust. It is a copy of the Suzuki GSXR pipe. I gave them a list of the mods on my bike and they pre set the carb accordingly. The only thing I have had to do so far is lift the idle speed a little.

      Nice pipe that one.looking at getting one my self. How you finding the sound of the ss1? Not too loud? I just got the procycle seat cover kit put on last week and I highly recommend it. Soo much better than the stock seat

      @@pyle9797 I did the Seat Concepts diy kit last fall. It is a must and so much better! The SS1 is just a little louder than the stock but really helps to open up the power band. I also ground the weld off of the exhaust header.
