My father had the tape "Golf My Way" by Jack Nicklaus. I came across a short video with Arthur Ashe giving a tennis lesson. I wondered if there was something like the Jack Nicklaus video about tennis with Arthur Ashe. Well, here we are. It is nice to see this.

That slow motion of the serve from behind is incredible even for a modern student! Very good to show concept.

Drills are great but the players sucks at hitting the balls.

Liked Arthur Ashe landing backfoot first, as a walk motion. 99,95% land first on frontfoot, indicating loss of weight shift force, prior to reaching release zone Also it then takes a compensationary additional rebalancing step before one is able to direct towards the return direction Another good example in this minority bracket is Boris Becker who also lands first on his backfoot The 99,95% would make great hop-step-jump candidates in athletics It is no wonder Nadal and Federer had to quit, sooner than necessary if they had developed proper landing skills

funny presentation, but "eyes on the ball" is still about the most useful advice you can give someone. Slow motion video of pros show them intensely focused on the ball all the way to ball contact.

It's amusing how many coaches say "no swinging", then show swinging.

Here's a curious little tidbit. When the men hit the forehand, during the backswing the racquet stays on the right side of their body, without breaking the plane. When the lady hit her forehand, her backswing was longer, breaking the plane of the body and winding up on her left side. This is the 40s equivalent to an ATP and a WTA forehand, respectively.

I am a big fan of Vic Braden. I dedicated 6 months around 1978 to modeling my game on his book Tennis for The Future. A lot of his information is still fundamentally sound but some is a bit obsolete. Jumping or pushing up off the ground to contact is now accepted as the correct way to serve. And, video has shown that pros release the toss around eye level give or take a couple of inches so the the toss travels a lot more than 17 inches from the hand. The toss travels 30 inches or significantly more from the hand. I am also a fan of a moderately low toss but very few pros hit at the apex of the toss where the ball is standing still. Federer's toss appeared low but video showed it dropped over a foot before contact. About 95% of pros let the ball dropped 6 inches or more before contact. Nick Kyrgios hit near the apex and there are a handful of others with a similar toss but not many. I would advise not tossing too high though.

Surprised he did not talk about the take back with the off hand more. He does it "lightly" but does not talk about it.

This wonderful historical clip does not show the two breaks of serve, in which I assume that there would be some extended ground rallies. The quality of serves and volleying in this match between two of the greatest players ever shows how the game should be played.
