Episode 10 | Paving the Road to Success with Timing, Empathy and People | Leon from Morning & PPP
In the final episode of Season 1, we’re thrilled to welcome Leon Foo, Founder of Morning and Co-founder & Chairman of PPP Coffee, to share his incredible journey with us.
Leon’s coffee story began in 2009 when he noticed the lack of freshly roasted coffee and top-tier equipment in Singapore. This sparked his passion for sourcing directly from producers, and to roasting and wholesaling.
Leon has worn many hats in the coffee industry-green importer, roaster, wholesaler, café owner, and barista. But at heart, he sees himself as a home brewer. His passion for crafting a delicious cup of coffee that highlights the tasting notes with ease inspired him to create Morning, a hassle-free capsule machine for specialty coffee.
Throughout our chat, Leon reflects on his proudest achievements and how perfect timing played a crucial role in his success.
Being a business owner isn’t easy-Leon knows this firsthand. Having managed multiple ventures early on, he openly discusses the challenges of managing teams, maintaining relationships, and balancing personal life, while staying focused on business goals.
Today, he leads with three pillars of empathy: for his team, customers, and suppliers.
Looking ahead, Leon shares his thoughts on future coffee trends, the rise of Southeast Asia in the global coffee scene, and how sustainability will drastically reshape coffee roasting.
Tune in for this inspiring and in-depth conversation!

Really lovely that you’ve created this podcast and “shine” a light 💡 towards the daily “grind” and people in the coffee industry. In the last 10-15 years, speciality coffee scene has truly grown, but we don’t see enough being spoken about the people behind this push. This podcast can potentially help others who may not understand speciality coffee to understand why things are done a certain way. To start seeking the opinions of baristas, respecting their profession to recommend the best for you. Before the 6 bars were available in Singapore, I found refuge in the far east outlet, because I was working in Orchard Central. At a time where white minimalist cafes were popping up, I was intrigued into this hole in the wall, like a bunker with a pink neon light. I was struck by the thoughtfulness by Aslam and his team back then, as they’d explain what was being served. It was heart warming to see textile neighbours visit the shop, and the baristas would know their orders and personally send it to their store. Despite opening another 5 bars, I get the same nostalgic feeling whenever I return to Far East Plaza. And I salute their bravery to open in such a place at that moment in time. As a barista now myself, I’m very sure these were some experience that I took with me, their hospitality and care for coffee. And I hope Singapore would start to see that there are many passionate people out there working to make you a wonderful and traceable cup of coffee. And it’s a job worthy of respecting. As Singaporeans we tend to be critical and judge a cafe for the 1 cup of coffee or experience. We tend to also compare and think who’s the best. I hope our community can grow in one that is supportive towards any businesses who are trying their best, and let them shine in their own way without comparisons. Going to a coffeeshop is like trying on a perfume, some scents suit you, and some don’t. Be less critical on Google reviews because your 1 star rating hurts their businesses. If you received a bad cup, please head back to the barista and tell him/her nicely. I’m very sure any passionate barista or coffee owner will be glad to remake the coffee, as they’d want you to have the best experience. And not all coffee shops are sit ins now, we’ve got little quaint takeaway bars that are also ready for a conversation or sharing. Don’t throw them shade for not providing wifi or enough seating.
