The TH-cam encodes of my HDR (PQ) content are amazing. If there’s anything that seems dark or poorly encoded it’s 100% my fault. Thanks for the great, free encoding service TH-cam!

This version has -45 degree less lens curvature than the fisheye original. The TH-cam app for Meta Quest renders content on a very curved screen, so if the content is also curved it becomes too much curvature. This should be optimal for the TH-cam app for Meta Quest.

How To Color Grade Canon HDR PQ Video
มุมมอง 17K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Canon's R5 camera can record HDR PQ, but how are you supposed to color grade it? In this quick tutorial I show how the BT2020_CanonLog2-to-BT709_WideDR_33_FF LUT (a technical LUT found on Canon's website) can be used to get a great look out of HDR PQ. In some cases HDR PQ can look better than Canon Log itself! Note: After posting this video my Canon technical contact confirmed that HDR PQ is ba...

Hello, I have the Eos R8 and when I put it in HDR PQ, the PP profiles only let me use Normal, Landscape, Portrait, Neutral. Why won't it let me use a custom one of the 3 user memories it has? This isn't right. I want to record at 10 bits with my own profile on my camera, to give a more film-like profile as desired, and the camera won't let me.
I’m assuming there’s been an update on the no HDR pq with digital IS? I checked and it looks like it’s working. I was about to return this bad boy lol.
@@S.Creations1 yes, tons of updates to the camera since this came out. Thanks for watching!
@@JimboSkinner Thank you for making this content, super helpful!
thank you soo much I found what I was looking for on the description
Thanks!!! I want to say, your settings for HDR PO => Rec709 convertion, are most real and beautiful. One more time, huge thanks!!
Sorry, forget the last alinea. It's logic, it is Rec709 timeline. OFX is fine as well.
Hello Jimbo, Maybe I miss something. Does it make sense, if you record in PQ versus you record and colorgrade in Clog2 as PQ is also based on Clog2. Canon Raw is after demosaicing, etc. based on Clog2, as well. Futher can you tell me how your Project Setting/Color Management setup is, you use in this video. Is it Davinci YRGB and Rec709 time line and output or did you use Davinci YRGB Color Managed and set to automatic color processing mode with HDR to SDR Rec709 output color space or Davinci or Canon Wide Gamut manually. OFX offers more flexibility to my knowledge. Thanks for your goor explination for HDR to Rec709 with the Canon Clog2 Lut.
The shadows in HDR PQ seem to get crushed a bit with the Canon LUT. Manual grading might be a better choice in post. Thanks for this demonstration. It's very helpful in my decision on getting the R50.

This works much better and looks WAY better if you do a color space transform. Rec.2020 --> Rec.709 Rec.2100 ST2084 --> Rec.709 2.4

Hello , very much apprieciated for the information, i really wanted to know that i couldn't find the lut for my canon r10, where as i can find it in the cameras that has c log, can u use the lut of other canon camera for my r10?
Hi, the top search results for Canon LUTs is the Canon Hong Kong site, which has the correct LUTs. I have no idea why the US Canon site won't post these: hk.canon/en/support/0200603902

Great Video. Just 1 question. Can I know how do you export HDR PQ video? Do you export as HDR 10 or Rec 709 or Rec 2020? Thank you
I think most of the cases you would export the final production in Rec709 like the standard colorspace for everyday purposes. Like TH-cam etc. To watch.
This may just be me but I can't find any Canon LUTs. I've found articles about several but no download link... Help, and Thanks

@@JimboSkinner The only way they seem to provide a LUT is with the DPP software, which is useless if you want to import the video into Resolve. I've ended up just using CST to convert from Rec2020 ST2084 to Rec709
@@JimboSkinner Wait, I just found their LUTs on there and have downloaded. Unfortunately they only seem to be LOG/2/3 nothing about HDRPQ. I don't even use LOG3 anymore because the blacks are way noisier than HDRPQ
Dang, I went on the ride last week and Jar Jar wasn't swimming and he didn't get stuck on the windshield. He was just standing there underwater, waving as you pass by him. Before that we were on the wookie planet and a wookie got stuck on the windshield. So maybe they have an alternate Naboo sequence so they don't use the same joke twice.
Unlike CLog, HDR PQ is a finished, ready for delivery format, *BUT* it is meant to be watched on HDR displays such latest HDR Tvs, HDR monitors, latest iPhones and iPads. 400 nits of brightness or more. Alternatively, HDR PQ can used as an acquisition format because it keeps more information than the standard video gamma. Ycan down grade to SDR video in post giving you flexibility the flexibility to adjust color and exposure. Explained in terms of resolution, is the equivalent to record in 8K to have the flexibility in post for cropping, etc, but the delivery is done in FHD or 4K.
That’s a great explanation!
Great video! Btw where I can download the “CanonLog2-to-BT709” LUT? Thanks
From the canon support page for your camera
Thanks for the video. One question, I'm a bit lost with the HDR world. Could you convert the Clog to SDR and get similar results like the conversion from HDR PQ using maybe another diferent tool or LUT? Best!
what is the base iso for hdr pq recording?
ISO 200. Because you have to turn on Highlight Tone Priority on.
Does this also apply to CLOG3 though?
thanks for this video, solved my question

You got better colours, because while shooting HDR PQ you still use picture profile (standard by default...)
I would love to know more about this. I'm very confused about the R10's menus and how it is that when the wheel is set on the video-camera icon I get hardly any options beyond "HDR or No HDR", while when it's set to the camera (e.g. A+) icons, I can choose 24fps and HDR PQ... but then the footage says it's been shot "HDR-PQ at 30fps." Huh? 🤦♂

When shooting in HDR-PQ, the digital IS should work. Might it be that you are mixing up shooting in "HDR-PQ" and "HDR movie recording"?
I fucking love Phantogram.
Thanks for the video, there's not too much content on TH-cam that goes into any kind of detail about the idiosyncrasies of working with this type of footage. Maybe I didn't look hard enough or maybe I'm doing something terribly wrong but today has been a bit of a struggle getting the HDR PQ footage off my R6 to look correct. At first my footage looked very strange, being totally discolored (unevenly), so I upgraded to version 14.9 of PP, that fixed the discoloration. I then applied the LUT you recommended (Canon) and it still looked a little off. Here's the thing I was missing; you need to go into the sequence settings, and change the working color space to REC 2100 PQ. In addition, and this applies to Clog LUTs from Canon, drop the LUTs into the creative folder. That way when you apply them you can adjust the intensity so that nothing's clipping. Also, I would only load in the LUTs you need for your version of Clog since I found that if you have too many, it can slow down PP and also Media Encoder when exporting video.
Great, great tips!
Make sure to use the Clog2 version of the Canon LUTS, PQ is just a type of Clog2. Thanks for watching and great tips on configuring your Adobe environment!
@@JimboSkinner Cheers. Just a comment/question, isn't the R6 using Clog1 ATM?
@@adammelnyk5631 the R6 has the same PQ implementation, which is based on Clog2
Interesting video alto, what are the actual differences between HDR PQ and CLog bt2020 (not 709) for instance (you could show us on a grading software)? Do you get more dynamic range while recording hdr PQ vs log bt2020? so far i am not quite convinced is worth using PQ. It seems more or less a "quicker" way to get footage graded out of the camera, vs log needing more grading work (alto not really after you have your LUTs). Do you have more info on this comparison? thank you
Hi Alfo, the Canon PQ implementation assigns bits in a curved way, allowing more bits for each end of the luminance spectrum. This results in what appears to be a more contrasty image. I really like the look, I think it’s great. The important thing to remember is that PQ can be played back on a TV or PC. Log still needs to be converted from the log version before it can be played back (and not look weird). Also remember most LUTS reduce log to Rec 709 space, so they “shrink down” the colors. While PQ is a 10 bit format, so it preserves the color... So in conclusion, PQ is a playable, 10 bit format that does an amazing job keeping all your colors on screen. Log can be converted to 10 bit, but unless your LUT specifically says it produces 10 bit it’s probably an 8 bit 709 LUT, which reduces color. So most LUT based workflows end up with less color in the final product.
@@JimboSkinner Thank you for the explanation! And sorry ,yes i meant Clog bt2020 in 10bit, vs PQ 10 bit. I guess, the dynamic range is more a thing of the camera sensor capabilities, rather then the shooting mode.
They are really great have to admit
BT2020_CanonLog-to-BT709_WideDR_33 looks strange on Premiere Pro export, colors are like washed out. It's ok on timeline BUT looks bad on exported file( looks like BT2020_CanonLog-to-BT709_WideDR_17 doesn't have same problem. Can't figure out the difference.. And wanna 1 button "make nice" on the camera)
Thanks for the comment. I talked to Canon tech support and the PQ variant is actually just Clog2 that has had the PQ curve applied to it. So you do need a log-to-709 LUT to be able to correctly convert it to 709. If you are having a problem with that LUT with PQ, try applying the same LUT to Clog2 and see if that conversion is working as expected. Clog2 and PQ are pretty close, so maybe troubleshoot with vanilla Clog2 before moving onto PQ.
@@JimboSkinner Thanks for information! What I did - just copied the LUT to C:\Program Files\Adobe... to have in drop-down list in Adobe Premiere. It worked, LUT was there, when I apply it I see changes in my preview and on timeline BUT not after encoding. If I select "custom" and choose same LUT from the explorer window, it works ok... Some bug I guess, strange, but that's it
Thanks for this video, saved me time, didn't work with canon luts and 10 bit before! Great thanks!
if you use standard colorprofile you get the same results in dr like clog3, ..in post you only need to bring up the shadows and turn down the highlights..no lut needed and better results/colors, same dynamic range
It is not true HDR PQ can’t work with Digital IS. My firmware version is 1.1.1 and it does work with IS.
@@JimboSkinner I am pretty sure I am using 4K HQ and I was able to use IBIS on my 24-70Lii.
@@gongfan5181 You are correct! With the latest firmware there is no problem using ibis with HDR PQ. I may have confused this with the 8k RAW mode which limits ibis.
The PQ colors appear to be richer, even after the down-convert to 709. Nice!
Thats because rec.2020 is a much smaller color space than canon cinema gamut. It needs to be properly converted to rec.709. It captured much more colors than rec.2020
