All things Aviation and other stuff! I especially like RC flying and drone technology.
VFR Proficiency Flight 1A3 to RZR and Return
This was a short cross country flight from Martin Campbell Airport (1A3) in Copperhill, TN to the Cleveland Jetport (RZR) located in Cleveland, TN. It was to do a couple of touch and go's at RZR for proficiency and to "knock the rust off" so to speak.
My GoPro camera that was on the right side of the windscreen fell down while doing some pattern work at RZR so I did a full stop landing to reattach it. This was beautiful day to fly indeed !!

Most of my logged time is in Cessna aircraft but recently I started flying a Piper Cherokee (PA28) out of the Western Carolina Airport (KRHP) in Andrews, NC. On this flight I wanted to capture the radio communications and show a couple of touch and go's at Western Carolina as well making a quick hop over to the Blairsville Airport (KDZJ) for a touch and go. I use an older GoPro Hero 3 as well a...

Cross Country Flight /ATC Communications/Inadvertent Flap Deployment

This flight took me from Blairsville Airport (KDZJ) to McCollum Airport (KRYY) in Kennesaw, GA (Cobb County). I talked to Atlanta Center, Atlanta Approach Control and McCollum Tower. You will see the things that went right and a few that did not. Most notable is I inadvertently deployed my flaps on takeoff after a touch and go. Best I can tell, my hand hit the lever downward as I moved it away ...
FLYING RC STUFF again and again

After nearly a 1 year hiatus from flying any of my RC airplanes due to several crashes, a period of rehab due to rotator cuff surgery I am trying get back to the RC airplane world. The ElectroStik and the CrazE Wing had not been flown in over a year. The CrazE Wing had several repairs last year so todays flight was almost like a 'Maiden Flight' all over again. I used a Mobius Action Camera atta...
Flying After Rotator Cuff Surgery
มุมมอง 1192 ปีที่แล้ว
This flight was my first one after having rotator cuff surgery on August 10, 2022 and the subsequent rehabilitation. It was almost 4 months since the last flight but it all seemed to come back rather well. I felt the best thing was to just get back in the air on a day with little wind and do some practice landings. I completed 4 touch and go's at the Western Carolina Airport in Andrews, North C...
Cessna Skyhawk Flight Blairsville (KDZJ) to Chattanooga (KCHA) and return.

On this flight it was a beautiful north Georgia day and great for flying. A unusual occurrence happened in the small access door on the engine cowling on the right side came open during the flight. It was not noticed until on final for runway 20 at CHA. This required exiting the landing runway, stopping and shutting down the engine and securing the door. The controllers in the tower were very h...
Introduction Flight For My Grandson| Scenic Views Of Georgia Mountains and North Carolina

Freedom Flight: 20 Years Since Sept 11 2001

Twenty years ago (as of September 11, 2021) I was working with the FAA as an Air Traffic Controller at the Air Traffic Control System Command Center then located in Herndon, VA. I was on duty during the day just hours after the horrendous attack on the USA. As I went flying on September 11, 2024, I was reminded of the freedom we all feel as we fly and the thought of that terrible day was foremo...
Using The MyPilotPro GoPro Mount-Blairsville, GA to Martin Campbell, TN
มุมมอง 1063 ปีที่แล้ว
I recently bought a MyPilotPro GoPro mount. It is a great tool to allow you an easy way to mount a GoPro camera to the outside of your aircraft via the tie down rings on the wings or the one on the tail. They have a basic model and one that has a swivel feature so you can basically place the camera at almost any angle. It is very secure with multiple ways to position. Please check out the produ...

HOTWING NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE PLUS REPAIR
Ok I used to live in Brooksville (BKV) back in the 70’s, and worked there as a line technician .
I been talking to our buddy Chuck Beam and he retired from FAA also and is mid working at Comcord Tower ip from Charlotte.
Can you move the conversation over to DM?
Where was your last facility ?
Tampa 2002-2013
Hey Frank ? How in the heck yoy doing ? This is Roger .. I’m now back home in PNS.
Al Loy!
Hey Roger! Sorry I did not see your message sooner. Doing well!! Retired from the FAA in 2013 and now living in north GA. Hope you are well.
Really nice video. Enjoyed watching it. Keep up the great work.
Thank you, sir! I will be picking some other airports within an hours distance to highlight.
@@frankloy2701 great. Where’s your home airport?
@@melvinelder3587 The home airport in Blairsville, GA.
@@frankloy2701 ah okay. I’m near Dothan Alabama. Ever gone up to Lincolnton North Carolina?
@@melvinelder3587 I have not but will need to check that as a possibility.
Put in a bit of dihedral. You'll find it to be 40% improved.
Frank,I sell and install this same RV cover.Would you pass the word alone for me? Thanks Jimmy Gilstrap at Anderson Carports. All southern states,2 weeks delivery time or less..Anderson,SC 864-296-3202
Jimmy Gilstrap I sure will.
Not worth the effort! Look's like smog, waste of a SD card.
The point of the video was to show the darkness as it developed as a result of a once in a lifetime solar eclipse. It wasn't to show the mountains in clarity. It did show the sunset 360 degrees as a result of the eclipse.
About the same as in colorado. Did not bother to bring out the uav for it.
I have found that yellow tinted glasses make the plane much more visible against clouds. They reduce the glare, making it easier to maintain visual orientation. I presume you are fairly new to the hobby, so don't give up, keep learning, but don't fly on your own. If you stick a hand through the prop, who is going to drive you to the hospital?
Hi. Question: are you using the recommended 6.3" (160 mm) CG on this wing? Thanks.
Alfonso I did follow the CG point of 160mm but also had to put about an ounce and half of weight in the nose to balance slightly nose down.
Hi. Question: are you using the recommended 160 mm CG on this wing?
Steve your plan sounds great. I hope you can show us the finished plane.
I have my second one on the way. It looks like you're running a smaller prop like a 6x4, is that correct? I am thinking going smaller for my second build and go for speed.
Steve- I actually have a Value Hobby 8x4.5 Electric Folding Prop with a 1-1/4 in (32mm) Folding Prop Spinner Hub (3.17mm shaft). It was ordered from Value Hobby. I like the folding props as it is less likely to break a prop on landing.
I also forgot to add that I cut away a small portion of the aileron area of the wing so the prop would not strike it a had good clearance. It did not effect the flight characteristics of the aircraft.
The folding prop should help the plane with the ability to glide by reducing drag. So far I haven't broken any props with this plane by landing I set the brake on and this helps. The plan for the second plane is to run an 8x4 prop as well. But this time it will be attached to a Turnigy D2826/6 which is a 2200KV motor. I will take the ESC up to 40 amps on this plane. This time I won't use the carbon fiber ribbon. Instead, using a Dremel with router attachment I will route out a spot for around a 6mm carbon rod (around 18 inches) just above CG. Then I will run a longer 3mm rod close to the motor. What I have found is that stiffness of the plane is super important Then I will use lightweight spackle to full in the holes and sand smooth. On the bottom, the plane will be painted green and orange to match with the paint on top. I will use my own control rods, and horns. And finally, I will cover it with 5mil lamination. It should be a good flyer.
So absolutely cool, Frank !!!!
Glad you enjoyed it. The crash was so quick and I am lucky there was not more damage.
I love mine so much that I bought the larger one and smaller one.
I am building the wing now. I am using AHU Por and hoping that the wing stays together. I have the two piece kit. I will try it as is first and then put a cover over the leading edge if I feel it needs more support.
Looks like you got higher than 400' up in the air.
same thing happen to me but didn't get credited back they was able to replace it
Very nice . Come back soon.
Thanks Mr.Loy. Ibfo is helpful. I can land mine easy now no tip overs. You must let the quad settle slow on the ground. I use a 4 ft. x 6 ft. Rubber mat as a landing pad. Works sweet. I put eight of them together to make a landing pad fpr my hughes 500 D heli. Good luck w/ the form 500.
The rubber mat idea sounds good! I don't know if you noticed the other videos I posted but check the channel out sometime when you can or subscribe. Happy Flying!!
Thank you and clear skies to you Sir. Old pilots saying from 1903 , as told to me by my grandfather who flew in the first age of flight.
Mine went to low voltage and started climbing from 60 to 100 ft. It freaked me out, so i switched to manual to take control. It worked it decended nicely as i wanted it to. Except 5 ft from the ground whle lowering throttle it turned off and dropped. I did not think i lowered t to 10% or less. At 10% or less the motors will turn off while in flight. the 10% rule is a factory default setting for safety on almost all RTF drones. The quad suffered no damage, though it sounded sick when it hit.
Oh yeah, both of the conditions i mentioned are completely not covered in thee manuals. Trial and error i am afraid. I build my own, but bought this for fun to lift a ghost costume for halloween. Any tips would be appreciated.
The little wire w/ jst is for cam gimbal power off the flight battery.
The situation you described with the low voltage and the drone climbing up to 100 feet is correct for the Return To Home function. When I first bought mine I ran a series of test to see how it would perform regarding the RTH feature. If I manually activated it at the transmitter it climbed to 100 feet, sought out the GPS coordinates and then descended. I learned that once it was about 10 feet above the ground I had to take over manually and then descend it to a few inches above the landing point then quickly come off the power to let it settle to the ground. The rotors never just completely stopped. So if yours are stopping completely during a landing I would call the tech support and discuss that condition. It should not happen unless by using the transmitter you turn them off. I basically learned that it is not good to let the quad land itself. It will flip over on it's side almost every time.
This video was made at the Brasstown RC Flyers Club in the beautiful mountains of Brasstown, North Carolina about 30 miles from my home. I just started getting into aerobatics. It is a lot of fun and the glider is very forgiving.
Great flight Frank, looks like you have a great helper there, won't be long he will be flying them with you, my 8 year old grandson is flying planes with me, he is really doing good, very pretty there, one of my best friends and flying buddies moved up here and retired from Atlanta Ga. His name is Ken Renaud. Hey your video looked real good but if you want a really rock solid vid then get the Tarot T4-3D 3 axis brushless gimbal at Hobby King for $92.85, it is rock solid and if you decide to get one i can show you how to make a custom mount for it to fit your Form 500, or i would be happy to make you one and send it to you, here is a video that i took with it mounted on my Form 500 and also the link to the gimbal i'm using, take care my friend and many happy flights to ya, Terry m.th-cam.com/video/tyg4mWeh9a8/w-d-xo.html www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__89754__Tarot_GOPRO_T4_3D_3_Axis_Brushless_Camera_Gimbal_AR_Warehouse_.html
I would like to know how you attached the Gimbal. Did it require any soldering? Were you able to control the Gimbal with the transmitter that came with the Form?
Only thing to solder is a jst tipp on the wires of the gimbal to plug onto the power lead from the quad. I just made a bracket out of light ply to mount the gimbal bracet to and then cut the arms off of the mount that came with the quad and mounted them to to wooden mount and it slides right on the rails of the quad, i can do a video this weekend and upload it for you so you can see how i did it
Oh yeah i forgot to tell you, i just plugged mine in direct, it comes with the cables to hook up so you can control it manually but i didn't do that on mine, the radio with it does have a coupke extra channels so i guess you could hook it up like that
The Phoenix rises again!
Great flight! I love that drone, keep it up
Thanks! This drone or quad has been a blast to fly and experiment with. I appreciate your comments and input!
This video was shared with the media in Tampa, Florida after a fatal accident at the Peter O Knight (TPF) airport in Tampa, Florida. The intent of my email and sharing this video was for educational purposes only to the flying public. The events of March 23, 2016 on my flight show how awareness and good pilot communications enhance the safety margin for all pilots. The system worked on this day but it also points out that it only takes a few seconds for something to go horribly wrong. Pilots can never be complacent.
Hey Frank, I'm the guy in the Twin Cessna. Unfortunately you chose to share this video with a Tampa Tribune writer who published as article about a "near mid-air collision". There was no "mid-air" collision, and there was no runway incursion because you did exactly what you're supposed to do, and I did exactly what I was supposed to do. This video was twisted in the article and tells the non-flying public that we almost had an accident. This is feeding into the frenzy about the recent fatal accident at Peter O. Knight, and the media is exploiting the tragic situation. I have no problem with you filming your flights, but when you share video like this with a reporter who is not a pilot, or knowledgeable about aviation procedures, you're doing more harm than good. You can reach me at champ42272@yahoo.com for further discussion.
