No thanks I'll take a can of spam and a big bag of Trail Mix for 15 bucks. You don't even need fire or water for that. There could be conditions where you would not want to start a fire or unable to start a fire or you don't want to be seen. Survival is all about having options. Have you seen those small Dinty Moore dinners that do not need to be heated just peel open and have a meal? They're not too bad and they're pretty cheap and the package is quite a bit smaller than what you're carrying.
@@rlbrown-js9ns I do find spam strangely delicious but I don’t think I could handle $13 worth of trail mix. It’s always good to have options and bring what is appropriate for your adventures. Cheers!
@topshelfbackpacking7867 next time you're in the store look for those no prep Dinty Moore meals. They're not that bad. Good luck with your Channel
@ I’ve had one or two before but never thought to bring them backpacking. Thanks for the tip and the support. Cheers!
Cool vid. I could do without constant music. Very jealous of those Washington trails and views! 🥂
@@hhhorb since I hate finding usable music I have done away with it in more recent videos. Glad you like the video and everyone should be jealous of the views in Washington. Cheers!
@topshelfbackpacking7867 Hope to make it out there from the East Coast one day, maybe we'll go camping together.
@ keep me posted. I’m always looking for new adventure buddies. Cheers!
I don't get it. At 2:35 you're five miles in with no tent setup but there are 2 cars in the background and you're under a shelter? Make it make sense.
@@hhhorb at the 0:10 second mark I mention I’m at a campground day hiking. That campground happened to be unusually close to a highway. Hope that helps. Cheers!
@topshelfbackpacking7867 , I got that, was confused about the hiking, though. 32lbs seems light for 3 days, guess you had more gear in the car. Just wanted to point out that this isn't realistic, but cheers to you as well! Any camping is good camping!
@ that 32lbs ended up being all I needed at camp, but I did have extra gear in the car just in case. Typically my pack is under 30lbs for up to 4 nights since I’m always out of shape and try to get the lightest gear possible. Cheers!
@@topshelfbackpacking7867 , OK, jealous of your gear! Thanks for the replies, will watch more of your videos! 🥂
@ lightweight gear also helps lighten my wallet.
Thank you!
Looking forward to your opinion of the Zenbivy system. I’ve gotten the best sleep in mine.
@@j3hikes444 we’re off to a good start. Cheers!
Did he mention which sleeping pad he is pairing with the zenbivy? I have the exact same quilt as you, except I got the white one (yea I know..white!?! But it was the only option they had at the time to get 30% off for the ultralight quilt) and I really like my quilt. I got the zenbivy flex pad with mine... and it's just been....mid. on my trip on new years it started leaking, and I couldn't find the leak (even submerged in the bath tub, or with soapy water and a spray bottle..) So I had to send mine back for zenbivy to fix it hopefully. They said it could take 6 weeks after they receive it 😢. I am actually wanting to try the thermarest neoloft, but I am forcing myself to wait until someone puts it on sale. I really enjoyed the video, I am trying to start recording some of my trips, and like seeing how other people do it.

That doesn't look like food? Looks like snacks? Junk food! My father had done a triple crown in 1988 Thru hiked the AT , CDT and PCT and didn't carry any of this type of food! He carried around 10 days of food and cooked on a gas stove ! I remember his speech at my college about doing not only his Triple Crown , But his 4th PCT Thru Hike from 1975 to 1995 and his 6th Appalachian Trail Thru Hikes from 75 to 99 and Never once said anything about candy bars! He carried peanut butter in a glass jar and had pasta 3 times a day! The food we eat on and off the trail should be healthy food! We go out in Nature to be free from the world of byproducts of junk food ! One should eat as healthy as they can without eating chemicals! My father loved hiking and was a close friend of waren dolye and hiked with him many times ! " MountainMaster " you ate missed deeply ! All gear is changing they discovered we hikers are polluting the wilderness with our high tech gear it's all sprayed with forever chemicals even your sleeping bag. We leave a little where ever we go so REI is banning the stuff we will see some changes and Cali is banning single use fuel canisters .I have hiked for forty years and several thru hikes I wonder how much of these chemicals I have absorbed into my body over the years
I'm glad to hear the changes are being made. It is a bit scary to think about how much it may have effected the users and the environments we all love. Cheers!
@@topshelfbackpacking7867 There ts a channel called mylifeoutdoors and he explains it better than I do. I think about my thru hikes I was wrapped in that stuff for five months at a time I plan on getting tested just to see

I think you have already stored some good amounts of calories in your body. Hiking is a low intensity exercise, so burning your body fat is a good proposition. You packed way too much food.
@@TheLicewine not sure the wilderness is where I want to test out ketosis. I packed about half to a third of the calories I would burn per day and generally felt good most days. I’m not sure I agree hiking 20 miles a day over mountains counts as low intensity. Cheers!
@topshelfbackpacking7867 I didn't make myself clear. 20 miles over mountains is strenuous, but in terms deriving energy from body fat is normal. There is a common misperception that low body fat is good. Like when you go hiking or getting old, it pays to have a bit more.
@@TheLicewine I have definitely had longer trips where I under packed food and my performance paid the price. I am glad I had the reserves to make up the 3-4k a day calorie deficit but not having years worth of reserve would be nice. Cheers!
@@TheLicewine funny enough I’ve always wanted to do a weekend trip without food just to see how it feels. I’ve just struggled with the logistics just in case I bonk harder than I expect. Cheers!
@topshelfbackpacking7867 I think, we just need to go out and play. There is always a way to get food and water. Where I live, cemeteries are a good source of water. Food is always available. Fun is more difficult to obtain.

@@topshelfbackpacking7867 neither is this channel. Bye.
Curious how you fared after. Too much, too little? I hiked the JMT this last summer. I thought I was totally prepared for a 7 day and later also an 8 day food carry. The rest were 4-5 days. I found that what I packed I could barely eat or didn’t like or it didn’t agree with me. I am an avid backpacker, though had never done a multi-week thru hike with these long carries.
@@kristymoore7052 if farting more would have helped propel me along the trail then I would say too little. Thankfully I’ve had enough meals to know what I like and what I can tolerate on longer trips. That helped keep farts to a minimum. Cheers!
