TSS Gross Load Maximum Radius using Whiteboard Method / No Diagram
As you have probably heard the CCO no longer offers pencil and paper exams and you cannot use a pencil and scratch paper to work out problems. This video demonstrates a method for solving CCO load chart problems using a whiteboard and no diagram. At the end of the video there is a link to another video showing the same problem worked out using a diagram.

Simple load chart problem illustrating a method for solving gross load / maximum radius problems you might see on the CCO LAT specialty exam. This method does not use a diagram of the configuration. Hang in there. I do not like the new changes requiring everything on the computer. Not only do you need to know the material you have to be able to use the damn software they are requiring. I’m afraid we may lose our safest operators because they are going out of their way to make the test harder than it should be. We are going to end up with a bunch of operators who can pass the test but can’t run a crane. I am starting to think CCO wants people to fail so they have to pay for retakes.

    • @LoadChartLab
      @LoadChartLab 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good luck on the recerts. I'm a paper guy too. The Garby book is consistent with the OSHA and ASME standards on number of full wraps on the boom hoist or load hoist drums. If you're talking about the Crane Institute of America, headquartered in Florida, I agree. When I was starting out in the late 90s / early 2000s I was in several of their workshops. Don't remember instructor names. Wraps on hoist drums: When it comes to wraps on the drum the following statement appears in paragraph 2-1.14.3 of ASME B30.2, paragraph 11-3.2.3 of ASME B30.11, and paragraph 16-1.2.6 of ASME B30.16. "No less than two wraps of rope shall remain on the drum at each anchorage of the hoist(ing) drum when the hook is in its extreme low position. If a machine is equipped with a lower limit device no less than one wrap shall remain" From an OSHA letter of interpretation: ". . . the extreme low position would be the lowest point that the hook could rest on the ground or floor while maintaining at least two wraps of rope. The requirements in the standard are designed so that sufficient and properly fastened rope remains on the drum and the rope does not slip off the drum." The following quotes are from the Crane Institute material, the Florida training organization: "No less than two full wraps or rope shall remain on the drum with boom point lowered to the level of the crane supporting surface" (ASME B30.5-1.3.1) "No less than two full wraps of rope shall remain on the drum when the hook is in its extreme low point" (ASME B30.5-1.3.2) www.osha.gov/laws-regs/standardinterpretations/2006-04-25-3#:~:text=No%20less%20than%20two%20wraps,than%20one%20wrap%20shall%20remain. I think what we may be running into is industry best practice versus legal mandates. Industry best practice followed by many companies is 3 wraps. If I saw the question I'm going with 2 wraps. CCO tests are largely based on the most widely applicable regulations, not best practices or company policy.

    Why do you multiply by .8

    • @LoadChartLab
      @LoadChartLab 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's because of the load chart note requiring crane to be derated for duty cycle operations. I explain this starting at about the 4:15 mark in the video. We have to derate the crane by 20 percent (.2) when swinging a concrete bucket (duty cycle). 1.0 - .2 = .8. If the cranes gross capacity (from chart or line pull) is 6,000 lbs, we derate by multiplying 6,000 by .8. The crane's capacity during duty cycle operations (concrete bucket in this case) equals 6,000 x .8 = 4,800 lbs. If the manufacturer required a 25% (.25) derating we would multiply our gross capacity by .75.
