For those of you frustrated by the labels superimposed over the names of the recommended plants, I think these are varieties listed: •Elaeagnus x ebbingei •Euonymus japonicus •Pittosporum tobira •Hedera hibernica Check your own climate before considering them. The first 3 are not hardy enough to survive the winter temperatures where I live. And the use of ivy is controversial here. It is regarded as a non-native, invasive species, and we are actually encouraged to remove it, not to propagate it. Make sure that what you're planting is appropriate and beneficial to your specific local environment. What is a treasured plant in one place can be a pesky weed somewhere else.

We've taken the end of his poem and adapted it for our little home on the range: "Oh give me a home That is built upon loam, Which is moist on a midsummer day; Where no puddles will lie, Where no wells will run dry, As they do upon gravel or clay. Home, home on the farm With all of its bucolic charm Through each livelong day It's all work & no play Cause there's all those damn taxes to pay."
