Does anyone who feels so terribly bad for Michael ever think about what Appollonia herself might have wanted out of life? When Michael first sees her in Sicily, she is escorting a bunch of little kids on a walk. Maybe she might have wanted to become a teacher! Everybody romanticizes Michael's experience of Appollonia, but nobody ever wonders what Appollonia might have wanted for her own life (besides being very hot for Michael, which she certainly was).

Michael always loved Apollonia and she was better for him than Kay. Sad...Kay was outspoken, independent and modern. Apollonia was traditional, sweet and gentle.

The real tragedy of Michael's life was losing Apollonia; she was his soulmate and his ethnic kindred spirit. She would never have thought of leaving him or having an abortion- ever. She would have accepted his line of business for what it was, not asked any questions or interfered and it would all have been fine. Kay was a very different sort of woman and ultimately ill suited to the life of a Mafia don. Apollonia was more than perfect for Michael...and something died inside of him when she lost her life so tragically. Michael had affection for Kay and he respected her but it paled in comparison to what he felt for the exquisite Apollonia. True soulmates...

I believe when Appolonia was killed, that completely sent Michael over the edge to the dark side. She was the love of his life, not Kay.

the actress who played Apollonia in this movie was still underage when they were shooting these scenes. The movie production had to wait a few months before they were able to shoot the first night scene in which she undressed herself.

I wonder, how much life did Michael really share with Apollonia during their brief marriage? He barely spoke any Sicilian, and her English was rudimentary. They were powerfully infatuated with each other, but they could barely communicate. Her death was a terrible tragedy, but Michael never really knew her, and the loss he suffers is more about himself than it is about her.

When I watch this scene, I always remember how Michael's bodyguard Carlo told him.... "Be careful Michele, Sicilian women are more dangerous than a gun..."....well, as for Apollonia, she is the most delightful, beautiful and pure character of all in the entire trilogy.
