Out of practice so I thought I'd experiment with tail gunning to stay out of everyone's way, to mixed success. In hindsight, I may as well have just ridden a time trial upfront.

I had stab at 3 laps to go, hoping to either go it alone or take the super strong guy with me for a 2 man breakaway, but unfortunately, he dragged the field with him and I didn't have the legs to compete on the final lap.

My downshifter jammed on the 1st lap, so I ended up stuck in my biggest gear for the rest of the race. I tried to follow a move at the end, but my legs just died.

    You rode at the back for what seemed like eternity and ended up at the front with one lap to go. I have no idea how you got there because I ended up fast forwarding 10 minutes into the 40 minute video. Kudos for the top-10 finish, but please allow a bit of unsolicited advice offered in good faith about the production value: Edit and add a bit of commentary. Watching you ride at the very back got boring real quick, but I wish I saw the part where you made your way to the front.

    Awesome, thanks for this! Just finished my local “learn the velo” course and there’s a mini “novice cup” series to follow. They are restricting us to 86” gearing so it will certainly make things interesting. For me there’s a very hard upper speed limit - I make decent power, but not at 140+rpm!

    Why do you use a big gear ?? Do you find your self burning out in races? Have you tried a smaller gear. I used to you a 94.5 (49/14) which was ideal for the sprints on a outdoor track but always died out on the longer events

    • @stevemayes
      @stevemayes ปีที่แล้ว

      I've basically been going for progressively bigger and bigger gears as I've experimented. For better or worse I've found from indoor training that my peak torque when sprinting is around 80rpm to 90rpm, and I spin out at around 115rpm, whereas most of the people I'm riding against seem to go up to around 130rpm, so without a bigger gear I can't compete. I'm sure real track riders and coaches would be screaming that I should just do more high cadence training, but at my age, I'm not sure the returns would be worth it when my power profile is more suited to going long anyway.

      Thanks. Before I started IRL racing I was basically doing about 5 short Zwift races a week. When I started the IRL stuff I knew that stamina would be my problem, so I switched to a weekly program of a long gentle IRL ride, a longer Zwift race, which I knew I'd suck at, and 1 or 2 short races that I'd do well in, to massage the ego. For video equipment, I use 2 GoPro 10s and a combination of Virb Edit and OpenShot Video editor.
