The Two Ferry Dream: Building a Boutique Cabin Experience | Norra Hem
Today we're welcoming the co-owner of Norra Hem, a stunning cliffside cabin on Hornby Island, one of British Columbia's enchanting Gulf Islands. What started as a six-month renovation project turned into a two-year labor of love, transforming a family property into a luxury short-term rental that celebrates local culture and craftsmanship. Our guest shares her journey of building and launching their first rental property on an island that requires two ferry rides just to reach, and how they've created an intentional, immersive experience that honors both the property's family legacy and the island's unique character.

Do you have the plans for this ?
THIS. First of all, very impressed with Isaac's vision, work, & commitment. Thanks for a great interview Janice & Isaac for sharing your insights, this was an inspiring podcast. There are probably more people watching Cabin Culture with intention to build a single unit, then repeat, however for the ones like us who have bought a small campground resort (or motel, fishing camp, etc) there is a tremendous impact of multiples, and we're also on a small footprint of only 7.4 Acres. Isaac touched on several important facets that we're currently exploring, including researching & archiving our brand heritage and developing enthralling historical storytelling. We agree, not everyone can lift cabining into an experience, and it isn't simply by curating a beautiful Insta. It's done artfully, analytically, aesthetically, and yes, with authenticity.
I have plans for the ravenhouse cabin and will build one in the next year or two… I’m a builder in New Zealand and we have different timber to work with if I’m to use locally sourced.. totally agree with the concepts talked about here, to do with budget vs value, and craftsmanship vs speed.. and also the mindset behind trying to build an experience vs building a money making machine in the form of multiple cabins etc vs a few quality units placed well Thanks for the post
So glad!!!
This was absolutely incredible! One of the most informative videos I’ve seen on opportunities like this.
Was waiting for total cost
nice
Wow wonderful video. All the videos on your channel are fantastic. But your video views are lower. Because your optimization is very poor. Your optimization needs to improve as soon as possible.,......,
revisiting again, The land that I was wanting ....someone secured it faster then I was able ....I was busy reading up on all the specifics which I am glad I still am even though It will be hard to find a location like the one I lost as it would of coupled the cabin of your design so harmoniously.
Where are the Bears?
Can floorplans and blueprints be purchased for this?
Thanks for the ideas on accounting and project management. We have a couple long term rentals and are currently building a cabin. We are not sure if we want to aggressively market our cabin or keep it as more of a friends and family just to pay the taxes and upkeep. Cheers
Yay! Glad it was helpful :) I know lots of folks who do it successfully both ways, so you can't go wrong :)

Post-it sisters, lol! (highlighters, too) great tips & advice in here! Trello may replace my *huge* stack of paper. Spreadsheets = Confidence. As a fellow 'type A', I am the same about jumping on suggestions and it is so hard to restrain and wait for patterns & trends to emerge over time. Beautiful cabin, Tenae, wishing you many successful hosting years!
It really is a beautiful spot! You can do lots from here if you want like wineries etc., but I come for the fishing. There are legit monsters in there and I'm not talking about the lakers!
having borrowed Will’s book 💗i now have my own copy, to savour and digest - most enjoyable podcast thank you both… Fiona De13 UK
Hello the cabin is a dream home its beautifull wow thankyou for sharing
Raven house and I are still going strong as no other design has taken the place of our plans. I am so happy to see this new video still looking for land. 😊😊Thankyou Mr. Pete and friends Happy New Year
How much to rent it!?
It depends on the season and day of the week, but you can find all the rental details here! airbnb.com/h/cozyrockcabin
the cabin is very nice and cozy you have a wonderful home
The bedrooms are GORGEOUS!! The downstairs just let down a bit.
As someone who lives full time in a log cabin I think this is a great discussion. But then I am biased because I know Will LOL
Hey, I still love the feedback! I SO enjoyed meeting him and discussing this book :)

How much for a hours like this
Depends where you build it, when you build it, and about 250 other choices you'll make along the way.
Why would you show the hot tub and not the outside of the house?
Beautiful, beautiful and Beautiful. Congratulations ❤❤❤
Great podcast! Love hearing more about building & working as a family. Grounding yourself in a place, esp to exponentially heal from trauma (not to assumpe, but covid was a kind of trauma for me), and to focus on an amazing creative journey, you'll never leave, it's become your heart! Naming cabins is a thing, been a thing forever! But, I believe it's one of the trickiest things to do and have it mean something and stick. If the cabin isn't finished, the name will follow at some point, it'll become obvious. When we bought Echo, we considered re-naming the cabins because they only have #s but we're letting things settle and grow around us. For our home at Green Lake, we named it simply, 'Fox', as that's the street it's on and to differentiate it from the family place. It's grown into the 'Lakehouse on Fox' for our airbnb. Our family cabin has a name given by my grandparents and we really started using it a lot more now that John and I have the other house (everyone got a little confused as they're on the same lake). My grandparents got it right: they felt Green Lake was 'idyllic', they could slow down and 'idle' (Grandpa repaired British cars, lol) and their last name started with an 'L', so the cabin is named, "IdylElls". We have this in a little book Grandpa kept his notes in, about the trips they made, the purchase in 1960 & repayments he made ($60 per month until the $1260 was repaid) and the whole story of the name is in there, it's absolute treasure!
I could see myself living there
There's so much in this conversation that resonates with me! I made MANY notes 😅
I'd love to hear some of them if you have the energy to share!
@@thecabinculture_ messaged you! For everyone else reading, be heart-forward in this business, stay curious and ask questions and take breaks where you can.
Love the gorgeous design and quality materials that went into building the Maine Lake Haus and the Maineaframe. These are not just places to stay, they are destinations that deliver a unique life experience.
The spare bed overlooking the kitchen is kinda cozy ! 😉
As always, there's so much value in this podcast & it's my new favorite!! Takeaways: magicplan app, kudos to Rob's supportive local lumber supplier Ward and Paul! Also, a nod to the quintessential PBS Alaskan Wilderness build (which has the same hypnotic, meditative quality as episodes of 'Joy of Painting'). Is it a cabin- yes, because overall finish weight leans to wood & setting outplays scale here, it's in the woods outside city living with the right design & no one lives in an A-frame in the city. Janice, you're an inspiring creator & it's fun to hear Rob say the same. On a small tangent, we have the rounded natural gas Jotul (GF 370) in our home that we are turning into our first rental and it's outstanding. It doesn't come as a wood burning set up, but it provides a standout, elevated focal point and cozy seating area and is visible from all areas of the great room, plus has a cool remote.
That looks like heaven on earth. And my dream all my life. I'm 73 and very sick. It will never happen. Only photos and videos like yours. Thank you.
😢
That is horrible up here in Ontario or in Canada period there is gorgeous cottages. I had a beautiful 77 acre family property with a cottage on it and huge lake front beach. If I didn't go there 80% of my friends had a cottage as well
This was such a good conversation. I love that you two were able to create this together! Any family would be lucky to share something so beautiful. I was definitely taken aback by the interior camera convo! Though as long as guests know they can unplug the camera when they arrive (and make it easy) then I guess that works. I certainly understand why you’d have it in a cabin that is left vacant through the winter.
Oh, and I like your lights from Greece.
I know 😣 It’s so funny cause when I talk about the interior cameras I know it feels weird, but we’ve never had a guest complain and they always get unplugged 🤷🏼♀️ We make it super clear in all our messaging, but still. I feel you… it doesn’t sound good 😂
This was so fun and we have sooooooo much more to talk about! Thanks for putting in the work to make this awesome podcast!
I refuse to do a follow up unless it's in person around a fire.
@@thecabinculture_ Sounds reasonable. ;)
Just discovered your podcast and have listened to first 4 eps in two days. And YES- I did come over to TH-cam to watch this ep as soon as I heard you mention it in your intro. So we are listening and we are paying attention!
Haha love this! I often wonder how many folks actually make it over from listening to TH-cam (vs. finding us on TH-cam). Glad you found us- welcome!!!
JJ might be happy to know that I found Cabin Tripping on the shelves of my public library in St. Augustine, Florida. His desire to create a legacy outside of the swirl of social media is a benefit to all of us. Janice, your enthusiasm is contagious and I will add my name to your list of subscribers. Thanks for making "the way life should be" even better!
The best!
Wow! It checks all the boxes! Especially love the shelves around the window in the upper bedroom...great design!
Thank you!!!
Thanks so much for this conversation! ❤
No matter how small or large your life is, it’s a matter of taste.
Stunning. ❤️
Did exactly as Pete suggested with our land search. We found a lot that was sitting on the market for almost a year. When we initially drove up to the property, it looked very steep and inaccessible, but we were determined to walk the property after a long drive out. We bravely climbed down into the lot and much to our surprise, there was an old timber road previously cut in that was covered in felled trees and shrubs. We were able to walk down into the property and noticed that it wasn't as steep or inaccessible as it looked from the road. A huge bonus was that we discovered a spring head and creek at the base of the lot! We were able to get an excellent deal on the property and are currently in discussions with a builder to build a Ravenhouse designed cabin. A lot of people search for flat property to build on, but Pete is spot on when he says that you get a much better view with a sloping terrain.
Very honest convo on the financing, budget and risks. This is pretty important stuff as the intersection of 'cabin dream' x land/location x $$ is a hard no for trad FIs and even second tier credit unions.
k, this super fun podcast needs a comment, I'll go first! Sitting here in the eaaarrrlly am before starting the day, all cozied up in a warm blanket watching friends talk. It's about 4 min in and I'm laughing about the wine glasses! For Pete's sake, we got to Echo and there were ZERO wine glasses in any of the cabins. We soon learned why. And YES, Dollar Stores for the wins! Ask me about our oven mitts and the lamb roasting Eastern European guests we love (who we can't wait to have back this year again :) A dozen wine glasses met their demise during their stay. So many oven mitts & wine glasses, thank God for the Dollar Stores. While I'm not drinking at 645 am, I'm sipping the morning java and highly entertained, thanks ladies!!
Oh my god it’s so nice
Me encantó el estante de los libros , pero pasar por la habitación princial para el dormitorio del 2 piso , no ❌
