Construction Industry Advocate and Leader.
We maintain our tools, our buildings and our budgets but what about our people? This channel is designed to maintain our greatest asset in construction...the PEOPLE. Whether you work with the industry or in the industry, in the field, the office, this content is for YOU!
Amy Powell (The Girl in the Hard Hat) is the owner and founder of Well Works, who designed, built, and conducts leadership mindset training for those within the construction industry. With over 19 years of construction experience, the commercial project manager turned Director of Training and Outreach recognized that the success of our projects relies not only on our management experience and skills but even more so on our leadership skills and abilities. This was when she noticed the lack of training and information focused on the "boots on the ground" leadership to best lead our diverse construction teams.

good video
Great explanation! Thanks
Thanks for these videos queen! This is what my short attention span has been needing
Great job, excellent explanation
A change order is used to blow up a price of a project to take advantage of a customer. Its really that simple. You get a contract to underbid competitor and then they jack up the price
You earned a new sub
Thanks!!
Good job hard hat lady. Great explanation. Helped me a lot😁
It's informative.
Promo-SM 🍀
Oh I’m adding this to my website. My customers need to understand why there will be extra costs for changes. And why they need a planning contract document.
So what is a resubmittal??? A change of material suggested !??
A resubmittal happens when the subcontractor has submitted on an item but the design team gives typically a “Rejected” or “Revise and Resubmit” response. From there you must create a revision of that specific submittal, and the subcontractor will submit the correct item addressing the design teams comments.
I'll be sharing this with my "Future Leaders in Construction" class in NH. :)
As a woman the field is rough and so much fun! I think the office should do regular job walks during the different progression phases. Perspective. I’m also a visual person which really helps me grasp the office process.
Shop drawings and submittals are the biggest wast of time. Everything is specified on the print , so they’re basically asking for you to give them back everything they already gave you . Let’s just be honest about it .
Thank you so much
This was very good information. Mostly common sense, but that is getting rare. I like the different voices to address coordination. Keep it up.
Great content
Back in the early 90s, I was hired as a project manager because I knew CPM project scheduling. The project was a military base in Los Alamitos CA. Back then CPM connected to payment schedules was new, except on very large projects. The first meeting on the military base was intimidating, with the base commander, 2-engineers, their project manager, and a minutes recorder. That is when they handed me the US-Military Forces Specification Bible. This Bible specified every nail, screw, bolt, toilet, etc along with approved vendors. Weekly meetings came with weekly submittals, any deviations from approved vendors needed engineered data and or samples. Try keeping the sub-contractor in line that buys stuff from local suppliers, and then telling them they can't continue because their unapproved faster was not submitted for approval. Submittals can be way more than flooring and paint samples.
Awesome
I swear your channel is gold for me right now.
I like your story
One more question, the main contractor gave us a formatbfor material submittal and one of the sdction there is "Material safety, storage and handling", do u have an idea where i can get this and what is it exactly? Is it gonna be from the manufacturer? (this is for wood parquet flooring btw)
Yes, it should be from the manufacturer, but sometimes these can be found with a little digging online by searching the material and finding the data sheets/specs/ required safety forms for the materials.
Hey amy im doing the sumbittals for a small company im working with. Our companys main work is for wood flooring, we export it outside. I just noticed that materrlial safety data sheets are an uncommon document to wood flooring. Sometimes im missing documents like test reports too from the manufacturer. Is this normal? And will that not be a big deal to the client and consultant
Saijoo, Great question. MSDS, or now commonly known as SDS are indeed very important submittals. While it may not likley be on the wood floor material itself, it is more likley to be on adhesives or finishes of the floor. From the GCs perspective, these SDS sheets aren't typically needed by the design team (although some want to review them), the SDS submittals need to be transmitted to the site supervisor/ superintendent for safety reasons. If anything happens on site, and there is an incident related to that product, the site crews need to be able to quickly access that document to better understand what they are dealing with and how to properly mitigate it. The storage and maintenance is important because sometimes it cannot be stores with one of the other many products onsite because it may become a hazard.
Can you do a video on writing and compiling effective submittals
👍👍👍👍
When does a submittal become a change order?? These videos are so so helpful!
Well technically a submittal never turns into a change order, but sometimes a submittal may be incorporated as a part of a change order? If changes are exposed through the submittal process (Oh no! We forgot to include the right faucets for the designed sinks), then this may initiate a change order. But, best practice is not to do this using the submittal. If there is indeed a change on the design teams part that was brought to the surface from the submittal process, than an official change document should be issued (ASI initiated from design team or RFI initiated by construction team). Rarely should a CO be initiated from the submitter during this process. This is a quality control check process, so whatever was bid and contracted (and therefore submitted) should have been whatever was already outlined in the contract documents and priced accordingly. If you submit something not listed on the documents...it is at your own financial risk if it isn't approved. If it is being submitted as a substitute, it should be clear as to why. But it goes the other way too...designers shouldent be buttoning up their documents or making changes at this phase or through this process. This is a crucial role of the project engineer or project manager to manage this process and make sure both sides are playing fair and not misusing what the process is intended for. Hope this helps!

Thank you for your videos. Really grateful and appreciative for the knowledge you are sharing. So refreshing to hear from a woman as this Industry is predominantly men. Keep them coming. Sending good vibes and support!
Thank you for taking the time to explain this plainly & properly. Only a true leader can break it down like you have . Again, thank you!
I have recently started work with a growing company with this work ethos in the UK, small company....Great need for female input on the psychology of getting work done efficiently....
So happy to find you! I've been in construction for over two decades and there is def a way women run projects vs men. Your approach mirrors mine and then some so I look forward to watching all your content.
Hi, new subscriber here. Thank you for your videos. I also knew nothing about construction what so ever. I am still learning with no college degree but I do have some clerical knowledge so I work with my brother in law in his construction company and I am learning more and more in helping him send out estimates for HVAC mechanical companies. It's been challenging but I think that is what is keeping me here as well. You get to explore different areas you never knew existed. Pretty cool.
Nice present
Thanks, it is so efficient
Great video presenting both sides. As a construction administrator, I experienced similar frustrations.
This video is right on the money. Thank you "the girl in the hard hat"
I have been having hard time finding difference between submittials and submissions but tank you love ❤ u have made it easy
I always put my chair on the table and sit on it so everyone knows that I am the boss!
Could you please suggest some books for Project Management? Also, is there any book that summarizes the whole construction work?
Faijal, Unfortunately I do not personally know of any books that comprehensively cover project management for construction. I do know of someone who creates some great online courses for this type of information though. It is construction-education.com/courses/ Anyone else have any books that would be a good source of info?
for me the first image come to my mind for Rose is ? Rose the main actor name in Titanic which I loved her to much at that time Looooooooool
Hi Madam! Who is preparing material submittals? which includes some of the ff., Concrete Mix Design, Method Statements, PDS, MTC, etc.
Janidons World, this depends on who is providing the material. Typically the firm or supplier providing the materials is required to provide the submittals. But this also depends if it is included in their contract. Whoever quoted and is providing the materials is to prove (by way of the submittals), what will be purchased and installed on the project. This is then verified and checked for completeness and that it is correct according to the specifications by the subcontractor or GC and then submitted to the consultant group for approval.
Are Document Controllers responsible for making submittals?
Our terminology may differ, please explain what you mean by document controllers and who that is within a company/ process to best answer your question.
Love the videos!!!!
She did a great job
You’re awesome thanks!
Great channel
If you are concerned with what chair you are sitting in to show you are the boss or the leader, seems like the priorities are mixed up.
Dave M, LOL. I would agree with that comment. If we are concerned about it, then we most definitely have our priorities mixed up. On the other hand, if we are aware of it, it can be very helpful to maximize the effectiveness of our communication. As we all know, communication is hard enough, so simply to have awareness of non-verbal and instinctual, subconscious social ques can only help us right? An interesting activity is to observe and notice peoples seating preferences in different meetings AFTER everyone is already seated. And to see how those meetings playout (what the intent was, how information was communicated, was it a good meeting or did the 'leader' just need to boost their ego). It's interesting and fascinating what we start to uncover when we start paying attention and listening to what is NOT said, just as much to what is said. (Similar to bids for a project...exclusions can be just as important, if not more so, than what is included).
@@thegirlinthehardhat when I anticipate a meeting will get heated because of a dispute for example I try and sit next to the person who will be against my stance. Trying to show how we aren't teaming up on them and wish to work it through together. Police do this during interrogations to assist with getting confessions also.
Nice work! A great example of how the information can be used. Now if only I can remember to do this next time...continuously learning and working on it...appriciate the application example as these can be so very helpful.
They don't want a HOT load!!!
Very good content as usual Amy!
Joe, thank you for your continual and unwavering support.
I love your channel, quick question. Are you in the office or in the field??
Brittany, thank you. My experience is from the Project Management perspective in the office. Though, within a med size company we ran multiple projects and we would have the opportunity to be on-site at least once a week (if not more if we could help it). My heart has always leaned towards the field and to understand and support them in anyway I was able to. As of last month I am now on my own and starting my own business...so I guess I am now in limbo.
