They didn't care enough to do research back in the day. The screenwriter was probably like. "What's a pony? A little horse? Must mean a pony is a baby horse!" There was no internet, so nobody could fact check unless they went to a library and read about it, so unless the viewer was already familiar with equestrian subspecies, they wouldn't know the difference.
