Hi! Thanks for taking the time to look at my channel. This channel will primarily be showcasing free flight scale models that are rubber powered, however there will also be some IC powered and EDF powered free flight models, alongside some of the more traditional rubber powered aircraft and Wakefields.
As an aviation enthusiast, I will also be adding videos from airshows and events that I attend around the UK.
I am a modeller that has returned back to the hobby after a 25 year hiatus. There has been a lot of new techniques to learn, along with more modern materials to use, and I hope to be able to showcase my models on this channel along with models that have been built by my good friend Ivan Taylor and fellow modellers.
2024 will see my 40” wingspan rubber powered DH Mosquito take to the air. I look forward to sharing the footage of the initial flights!
If you like what you see, please do remember to like, share and subscribe!

Trimming flights with Ivan.
Today myself and Ivan spent a morning trimming our models. Unfortunately for me, my trimming started with a glide, before Ivan pointed out that I’d engineered a substantial warp into the port wing. Bugger!
It was a rookie error on my part as I’d not eyeballed it up when I was carrying out the repairs from the previous trimming crash.
So, more surgery needed on the Mossie!
After that, Ivan continued trimming his Skyraider and DH Hornet. There’s still a way to go before they’re trimmed, but it’s great to watch Ivan at work. It’s also interesting to see how the models respond to a few small adjustments!
It’s definitely a great way to learn, and despite the setback with the Mosquito, another enjoyable and productive time.

Trimming with Ivan Taylor

Hi, and thanks for taking the time to watch the video. Myself and Ivan have been out trimming our models again! Ivan’s Mig 3 is responding much better now with a touch of weight on the starboard wingtip. Ivan also managed a few trim flights with his newly built Douglas Skyraider. After adding nose weight to tame the stall, a few hand turns were applied. I think the results speak for themselves ...

Just a short clip of Ivan Taylor’s Mig 3. This was only a trimming flight for the Mig, but the turbulent air coming through the trees wasn’t ideal. Luckily the Mig only lost a propeller blade, so Ivan will have a new one made in no time. Prior to the Mig flight, we had been once again trimming my DH Mosquito. The first trimming session highlighted a need for additional down thrust. With this ad...

I hope you enjoy a compilation of the initial trimming flights of my 40” DH Mosquito. With the help of my great friend Ivan Taylor, we made some excellent progress in the couple of hours we had this evening. We started off getting the glide right, then moved on to adding some turns. Starting off with 200 and finished off the evening on 350 turns. Initial climb is indicating more down thrust is ...

I hope you enjoy my video from the Duxford Battle of Britain Airshow. The weather was glorious, the airshow was glorious and the sound of Merlin engines was also glorious! We were treated to some of the finest flying and finest warbirds you could wish to see! We need to remember ‘the few’. It’s not a glorification of war, it’s remembering the brave members of the armed forces who fought for fre...

On the 16th of May, 1943 Lancaster bombers of 617 squadron, equipped with Barnes Wallis’ bouncing bomb set off from RAF Scampton, in Lincolnshire to attack the Ruhr Valley dams - the Mohne, Eder and Sorpe. The code name for this attack was Operation Chastise. They were led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, and the attack on the dams was considered a success, but many of the aircrew did not return h...

Here’s a video of my good friend Ivan Taylor flying his EDF English Electric Lightning. Todays flying was at Cannock Chase in a rather chilly 4 degrees! Yet again, the EE Lightning put in another fantastic flight - despite the cold weather.
Hi, some progress but unfortunately Mark's Mosquito needs some attention before we get it back in the air. The turbulence is apparent with most flights and this does not help finding the settings needed. Not the best site but the Heather is a blessing. The new Hornet has been around for a while and it was nice to finally see it in the air. On full turns(around 700) it should get high, but not on this site. The Skyraider needs many more flights yet. Thanks Mark.
It was certainly a strange day with the weather today, but as you said, the trees will be creating turbulence. Another day of learning though for me, so at least it wasn’t a wasted day. Great to see the Hornet in the air as well mate.
Did you paint it? Great job, looks too pretty to fly! Cheers from Normandy.
Yeah i painted it with my airbrush using Vallejo model air paints. It’s not looking quite so pretty now after an unfortunate coming together with the ground, but these things happen! Thanks for the kind words though 👍🏻
NICE work! That will look awesome up in the sky...well done. -Dan
Thanks. It doesn’t look quite so nice anymore as it had a bit of an accident when we were out trimming. But, I’ve done the repairs now and it just needs covering. But I can confirm, it certainly did look good when it was flying a bit higher!
Great video Mark thanks. A new Skyraider form Ivan 🙂 looks like it will very impressive. Glad to hear the Mossy repairs are going well and look forward to seeing it in the air again
Thanks Chris. Yes the Skyraider was ridiculously impressive! What’s more impressive is the fact that the flights in this video are the model’s maiden flights! Touch of nose weight added before flight 2, and then the hand turns. Off it went! Ivan is without doubt, an extremely good aeromodeller. There was no way I could have binned the Mossy, or just left it sat there in that state. I certainly felt fed up at the time, but you have to pick yourself up, dust yourself down and get stuck in. I did notice that the wind conditions for where we have been trimming were actually looking favourable for this coming Monday or Tuesday, but I’ve chosen to not rush to try and be ready for then. Rest assured, when the Mossy takes to the sky again, the footage will be uploaded in here. 👍🏻
Intriguing that you favour tip weight for trimming. A lot of the old time flyers who write for the FAC Newsletter steam in washin to the wing that needs weight then shoot for a flat glide. Sorry about the Mossie. Many a Model has come undone during initial trim sessions. I'm in the process of scratch building an Easy Built Mosquito for rubber flight but at a 24 inch span it's lower Reynolds number means trimming it won't be a walk in the park. Keep 'em flying.
Yes I have found the use of tip weight very useful and effective and only a tiny amount is usually needed. Along with the other adjustments including wash in or out it adds another tool for us to use. Which is nice.
Don’t be sorry! The repairs to the Mossie are well under way, and I’ll soon be back out trimming with Ivan. I feel it’s important to show the highs and the lows that come hand in hand with the hobby. Good luck with trimming your Mosquito 👍🏻
You're a man who definitely knows how to enjoy a hobby. Well done Sir!
Thanks! It’s definitely rewarding when you get a good flight from a model.
Magnificent! Sorry for your Misquito, war wounds ya know.
Thanks! Yeah these things happen, but I’ll just crack on and get it repaired. Appreciate the comment 👍🏻
what kit?
It’s not a kit mate. It’s the Howard Boys plan that can be found on outerzone.
Hi, well I felt so sorry for Mark but he will get that repaired and we will get it flying just great! The path got it after it stalled after the power burst using the slightly more powerful motors. I was hoping Mark had added a little more down thrust and I should have been more assertive before the flight and added a bit. The Mosquito is showing the same characteristics as my Hornet did, they need lots of downthrust these twins. Was nice to get the Mig behaving and try the brand new Skyraider for the first time.
These things happen I guess mate. But I’ll soon have the Mosquito repaired and back out for more trimming flights. I’ve already made a start on the repairs! The Mig was looking much better in flight, and as for the Skyraider! That’s going to be a superb flyer going off the flight just with hand turns on!
It's past your bedtime and mine.
Definitely use a blast tube. You’ve put too much work in your mossy not to
Hi James, thanks for the comment. Originally the intention was to wind the motors outside the model in a half tube, then insert into the model. But the starboard counter rotation created problems for the Piserchio hook and how it located on the motor peg in the back. The Piserchio hook and half tube setup is what’s used on Wakefields, and I liked the idea - it’s something I may still revisit this method and have some new Piserchio hooks made to cope with counter rotating propellers. In the mean time, I will be using a blast tube. We have upped the strands on the motor now as well for more power, so the blast tube has become a necessity. We are hopefully going to get another trimming session in very soon.
Impressive Model. Very reminiscent of a Howard Boys design. Seems more stable flying left. i take it they are counter rotating props and you adjust turn on the rudder rather than wing tip washin. Like you I returned to free flight after a 40 year hiatus. It’s a rewarding pastime as you have shown. Chapeau!
Thank you! The model itself is the Howard Boys design, but there were changes made throughout the build to improve the flying ability - the wing ribs for example were modified, the rear tailplane design was altered for increased stiffness etc. Yes the propellers are counter rotating. This is so the torque of the rubber motors counteract each other, and it helps the model to keep stable in the air as a result. Unfortunately there is a weight bias on the right, so the model was laterally unstable causing the turn to the right, this was counteracted with 2g of lead on the wingtip to balance the glide. The left turn is done using side thrust. I made some tapered shims that can be turned to adjust downthrust and side thrust at the same time, but as you increase one, you decrease the other. For trimming session 2, I made new tapered shims as we didn’t have enough downthrust and the model flies much better - just needed more power. Trimming session number 2 was cut short though when the motor burst at 700 turns, so repairs were required. This has all been done now - just awaiting the aero modelling weather gods to permit more trimming! Yes I really have enjoyed returning back to aeromodelling. It is as you say, very rewarding!
Hi, some interesting lessons from this session. Although we previously blew a motor at 900 turns one went bang at 700. Use a winding (blast) tube. Check condition of strands. Take care with winding technique. Guilty of all three! When flying in the shelter of upwind trees once more turns are used and the model may climb higher more turbulence can be expected. An hour after we packed up it went flat calm with possibly 2 more hours of daylight and perfect trimming conditions. On retrieving the Mig I failed to notice a prop blade missing, always check the model before moving it, even if you are pleased to see it's OK. Apart from all this we had fun.
pretty annoying how you see 3 Hurricanes taxiing out , and the very next scene is 3 Mustangs flying together. Is this intentionally meant to be confusing for people who dont know their aircraft ?
It’s a compilation of videos that were shot at last years Duxford Battle of Britain Airshow. I imagine the Mustangs had already taken to the air, not been captured on video, and the Hurricanes were taxying out to take off and hold in preparation for their display. How it can have been done intentionally in the compilation to confuse people, is a bit farcical. It was done however for people to enjoy the sights and sounds on the day.
I only gasped once!
Well you did better than me! This model had been in build since covid struck (2020), so to finally see it take to the air was nerve wracking, but exciting all at the same time!
Very promising. The cuckoo thought so too.
Thanks! Hahaha! There was actually 2 cuckoos that were sounding off throughout the session we had. I hope they were learning as much as I was!
That last flight was beginning to look good and by the time its fully trimmed it will fly well and it looks very good in flight.
Small adjustments and understanding what those adjustments need to be, will make all the difference Dad. Hopefully you can come to one of the trimming sessions with me and Ivan. 👍🏻
If whe are not at the caravan, I wouldn't mind coming.
@@michaelmayfield2095 Well i can’t see that being an issue - weather permitting obviously!
Wow that's looking really promising Mark. It's really good to watch Ivan going through the trimming process and see the steady progression he makes. Great video
Thanks Chris. Yes I think it’s safe to say, he knows what he’s doing when it comes to trimming models! We will be going back to the glide setting before we do anymore flights under power on the next trimming session.
Hi, this was with the last flight having just 350 turns. A motor was tested after the session and blew at 900. We will continue with this size motor and see if we have enough power. After many small adjustments it seems we are on the right track and it should fly really well. All credit to Mark for a lovely build.
It was a great trimming session, and I’ve learned a lot, so all credit to you mate. Looking forward to the next one now!
A perfectly shot video of beautifully flown displays. Many thanks to you, the pilots and crews, the organizers and all of the hard-working people on the ground!
Thank you for your kind words. BBMF members day is always a well organised event.
Just Beautiful
Thank you!
Great video, great planes.
Thanks mate!
I see Prince William do a speech here one few years back
Lovely to meet you and Clare yesterday. Hope Ted enjoyed his ride
Yeah sit down haha😂
Was at it in 2015 a fantastic display.
Please use low shutter speeds, 1/50 is perfect, still get a steady shot but also get correct blades, else they appear to have faulty engines AND LOOK STUPID ! It is perfectly possible to see the props as our eyes see them, not almost frozen. Also don't aim at sky in auto mode, we end up with silhouettes. just black shapes, set the exposure for the grass, lock it in, then aim at sky ! Full manual control its called, or add in compensation. Its been around as filming method for decades, then someone seems to have forgotten it, maybe the japs who make the devices. A camera used as video filming can do it, and certainly a full manual control camcorder. Never buy a fully automatic only device, as useless for airshows !
Looked like a fantastic day with the weather playing it's part. Thanks for sharing
Yeah it was a superb day. Very enjoyable. 👍🏻
Excellent Jim 👍👍🚀🚀
I’ll let Jim know 😂
The thing what really is astonishing is that most of the pilots on both sides during WW2 were 19-25 years old ,also just like to add years ago i was lucky enough to have a flight in Sally B ,we were "bounced" by a pair of Spits ,standing at the waist gunners station it was frightening how fast the fighters were a speck then by you ,how they shot them down is astonishing.
Wow! I bet that was an awesome experience! Thanks for sharing!
What’s better than the Battle of Britain display with the most appropriate music playing I had a wonderful day thanks to every one at Duxford 🤟🏻
Yeah I was loving it when they were playing the Battle of Britain film music when the Spitfires and the 109’s were doing their ‘dog fight’
I was there such an amazing day
Best airshow in the uk.

We always used to go on the Friday's before the airshows, being members of the IWM. We watched the practice displays, fewer people and no extra cost. We haven't been for some time now, we used to enjoy our visits.
Nice one! Love the sound of the Merlin! I was there the day after. Less good weather but lovely sounds just the same 😀👍
No problem at all. Ah you were lucky enough to see BBMF Spitfire P7350 then! I think the Battle of Britain airshow on Sunday was one of its first displays since it had an engine issue when returning to RAF Coningsby in the summer. That particular Spitfire saw action during the Battle of Britain as well, so very fitting to be a part of the airshow!
...missed it this year, thanks for the video ❤👍
No problem. There’s always next year!
Wish they wouldn’t fly so far out, doubtless the work of some pen pushing nork at the Ministry of Spoiling Everything
Yes me too, but I’d rather they still have airshows than not because of H&S concerns. We unfortunately live in a ‘where there’s blame, there’s a claim’ culture, so I can understand why they put so many restrictions in place. Minority ruining it for the majority though ultimately.
@@freeflightscale Indeed, gone are the days of pilots making it up as they went along.
@@tectoramia-sz1lu The Shoreham crash didn’t do the airshow scene much of a favour either tbh.
I was there in the crowd on the 16th, thanks for sharing 👍
You’re very welcome
“Bloody marvellous” It’s the first time in many years I didn’t make this BoB show 😕 The sights and especially the sounds are so amazing, spine tingling…especially the Lancaster with her 4 synced Merlins 🥰 Ultimately though, I am a Spitfire nut so they are the stars of the show for me 😎👍🏼

Great show we were there
Fully agree! It was a great airshow/day
Cheers, that save me a few quid 👍🍻
wanted to go but it said no parking sold out useless how can there be no spaces in a massive place like that
The car park isn't big enough to hold the cars of a sell out show.....I visited late October one year and was surprised how few parking spaces there are. There is a park and ride service from a nearby location though, didn't you fancy using that?
Over 33,500 people attended, However if you had read the FAQs, you could have parked at the Train station or Park and Ride, and got free Bus/Shuttle to and from the event which had ample parking.
Cheers m8 was at that show 👍.
No problem! Hope you enjoyed as much as I did!
Cheers I did
Well done for flagging up Battle of Britain day (15th Sept) in the video description, its something l have, and will continue to highlight in my own TH-cam videos, nice video by the way.
I will always try to add some information into my video descriptions, as there’s nothing more annoying than clicking on the video description to find nothing! Thank you for the kind words, much appreciated. 👍🏻
Great video, thanks for taking the time to post. What better sight than seeing a Spitfire in a blue sky over England, and that sound......perfect late summers day.
You’re very welcome. It was definitely a memorable and thought provoking day.
I mentioned to friends that the 15th September was Battle of Britain Day. They hadn't remembered. Very sad as it's part of History. 😢I remember it being in the Daily Paper.
I was overseas working with our American cousins, they knew all about BoB Day.; and were surprised some of the UK guys didn't...we mustn't forget what made this country Great....
The main thing is, you were not alone in remembering Battle of Britain day. The crowds at Duxford for the airshow was great to see, and proof that the brave servicemen and women have not been forgotten. There was also a lot of different nationalities at the airshow!
Totally agree, Battle of Britain Day (15th September) is one of the most important dates to remember regarding this country's aviation/military history. Unfortunately as the years roll by the people who were directly involved will become less and eventually all fade into history too, leaving the word to be passed on by less and less people interested in keeping their memory and the history they so bravely created alive. I will continue for as long as l can through my own TH-cam videos in flying the flag in their honour .
@@timeslip9 yes it certainly is. It’s also important that we keep these fantastic warbirds in airworthy condition as a flying memorial to the brave pilots - and I mean all of them, not just the British pilots. The roar of a merlin engine, the sight of a spitfire, hurricane and a 109 are thought provoking to say the least.
@@timeslip9 My GT Grandson is a Cpl in the Air Cadets. He lives and breathes flying and has his Glider Wings, also has flown several times as co pilot in a light aircraft. The Red Arrows has been his inspiration since he was a little boy. Better report than the infamous BBC.
Can't wait to see the German tribute to the London Blitz Anniversary. Why do Anglos always want to celebrate and glorify the deaths of other humans? Oh that's right, they're just chess pieces!!!!
It’s not to ‘glorify the deaths of other humans’, it’s to remember the brave people who gave their lives, selflessly, so that others could live on in peace. And for me, I remember everyone who fought and died on both sides.
Whata beautiful sound
2 Merlins make 1 magical bomber 😎
That would also make it a Mosquito. 4 Merlins on the Lancaster 😂
