Partnachklamm & Neuschwanstein - Garmisch/Austria Trip – July 2023
Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria, Germany. We decided to stay in Austria this time instead of Garmisch. So glad we did. We would definitely recommend the Rimmlstube. We stayed in the holiday apartment above the restaurant. Plenty of space for us and the dog. Food at the restaurant was delicious. Day 1 took us to the top of Germany at the Zugspitz and then a breathtaking hike around the Eibsee. Day 2 we were off to Garmisch where we hiked the Partnachklamm (Gorge) and then visited Neuschwanstein castle in Fussen.

Sorry to correct you; it's been made by Americans, and if you look at the series, it's called "Normandy." Well, Normandy consisted of Four Allies, but the series only shows Omaha, Utah, St Mere Eglise, Ponte du Hoc, La Fiere. Longues, Colleville and all-American cemeteries. When you call up Normandy or D-Day on your browser, you will be fortunate to find a single upload that isn't all-American. Occasionaly a very brief mention is made of British, Canadian or French forces, but every episode is chock full of "Our brave American Soldiers," American Zones, American Paratroopers, American Cemeteries, American museums, and American flags flying in zones where no Amertican ever set foot. Where is the honour paid to the others? You can't get away from the plethora of American vainglory. I watched one episode of A "Normandy" Tour - covering Pegasus Bridge. The first scene was an American flag in pride of place of all others; the second scene was an American rifle marking a fallen American soldierm topped with an American helmet. The third scene was a group of American troops digiing a grave for a fallen comrade. we then had a ten-minute brief on what happened at Pegasus before we were shown part of the museum - concentrating mainly on American American artefacts and mannekins. The next fifteen minutes was all about the Americans talking about the removal of a section of the bridge to take back tro the US. I actually challenged the producer of the series, and brought several of these scenes to his attention. Within a week he had cut oout some of them, but still left in more than he'd taken out. So I don't make any apology, nor do I accept every effort you've made to undermine my claims. I've been a military historian for over fifty years, so I'm no armchair general or amateur battlefield guide. I know the American history of warfare, I know their successes and failures. and one thing comes to the top every time - their love of self glory and their didtate of everything British. Now I'm done with you!

@@bssd.europa It depends entirely on where you're going in the UK - and for how long! Do you mean UK or England, or Scotland, or Wales or Northern Ireland? Give me a rough itinerary and I might be able to help; The UK may be a small-ish island, but you won't get more than a few cities and their sites of interest in a week. If you're going to London there's plenty of choice - The War Cabinet rooms near Whitehall, the Cenotaph in Whitehall, Tomb of the Unknown Warrior in Westminster Abbey,The Guards Museum by St James Park, HMS Belfast (D-Day Command Ship) near London Bridge, The "Blitz" Tour runs virtually every day in London, but the Blitz was also a feature in Belfast, Glasgow, Liverpool, Hull. Cardiff, Swansea....... Take a close-up look at Google Maps City of London area, and you'll find more memorials to WW1 & WW2 than you can visit in a day!

We'll certainly hit London for a week or so, but we're planning several trips up to a week in some of the other areas. Thanks for those sites, will see if we can get some of those on the itinerary.

I guess this just shows how much the WHOLE WORLD 'didn't cotton to' Germany saying, "We're the superior race, and we're gonna be in charge of EVERYTHING." Yet the world still has people today who want to be king of the world or at least king of a mountain. You didn't learn a damn thing, did you?

This landing and the 3 months of bloody fighting that followed were very costly in terms of human lives. On both sides, and also on the side of French civilians. This operation is often depicted in a heroic mode by Hollywood, notably by Spielberg, but many forget that for the civilian population of Normandy, it was hell. There had been more French civilians killed than US troops killed in action. The maximum estimate of civilian losses is around 50,000, in dozens of towns razed or heavily damaged by the fighting, and especially by the terrible aerial bombardments, like in Caen or Le Havre. More generally, France, after Germany, was the most heavily bombed country in Western Europe, with 518,000 tons of bombs dropped in 5 years, and almost 70000 civilians killed. Not just in Normandy, but all over France. Reconstruction took about 20 years in many places.

Very sad what the soldiers had to face including for months after landing. We owe our freedom to all of them, Americans, Brits, Canadians, Anzacs, Free French, Poles, South Africans, Indians, Russians, the underground (including women spies) and everyone who fought with the Allies.
