Don’t Solve Algae Like a Scientist. Save Time. Do This Instead… | UNDR
I explain the steps I took to get rid of algae in my planted aquarium and why isolating variables and experimenting is not the best path to achieving good aquatic plant health. You should not change aquarium factors one-by-one in any tank you really care about.

Seems like alot for some tiny fish and some plants, seems like an expensive way of fighting against nature
Now that is authentic
it was really cringe making this too long using stock videos... especially the kid... this was a too long video and unbearable... sorry...
Hey, good to know you think I can save on a stock video subscription! $$$
I do get that showing a kid crying can be disturbing. Thanks for the feedback.
it's great to see a TH-camr fail for once... great results now!
Haha, thanks. Tryin to keep it real.
I do dirted tanks & the only one that's failed & I had to redo was my betta tank because he decided to become a digger & got down to the substrate 3x before I stopped filling his holes & changing the water. Now he just gets sand & glass pebbles to push around. Otherwise when I get an outbreak on occasion, the Siamese algae eater cleans everything up.
Glad to hear you’ve figured out a system that works well for you! That beta sounds like a lovable menace, haha!
Pretty much went through the same route, Dennis' work on the APT line is amazing! As he said himself, the goal is repetitive results in as much tanks as possible, which I think he's achieved!
From my experience so far, he’s achieved that goal! I’m really grateful for the people like him who figure these things out for the rest of us.
I also agree! The APT Jazz root capsules are amazing too. I use these in clients tanks without any soil, just gravel and plant growth explodes. Another big fan of Dennis and his team and work! Great content in this video. No BS, and very comprehensive info! 👍🏻
Leaf zone is not an all in one fertilizer. It is potassium and iron.
You’re totally right. I messed that up. I’ve seen it used kind of like an all-in-one, but it’s not a true all-in-one.
I'm about 4 months into my first aquascape... So far, so good, as it should be. I've recently started using the Aquarium Co-Op Easy Green, but only at half the recommended dose for now because my plants are still smallish and filling out the space. As the tank grows in, I plan to slowly increase the dosage. You mention Leaf Zone as an All-in-one fertilizer, but I'd like to clarify that it is not. Leaf Zone is 3% soluble potash (potassium) and 0.1% iron. My understanding is that the main purpose of Leaf Zone is for heavily planted community tanks. The fish waste provides nitrogen and phosphorus, and the Leaf Zone provides the final piece of the puzzle so the plants can consume all three.
Thanks for clarifying about Leaf Zone! I see I was incorrect about that. I’ve seen it being used like an all-in-one, but you’re totally right: they only list potassium and iron. It seems this would only work well for a tank that is pretty heavily stocked. Glad to hear that you seem to be enjoying the Easy Green!
i am also into this hobby for almost 2 years and i have learned from my experience that to balance a planted aquarium always do not try to deal with multiple variables at the same time
Thanks for sharing your experience! I think changing one variable at a time could work if the aquarium is almost balanced already, but if a tank is way out of balance like mine was, I think it’s a different story.
My brother, I had the same problem as you and I took almost the EXACT same steps as you minus the auto doser. What I discovered, as you did, that we need a lot more nutrients then seachem provides in their bottle. However, I noticed the majority of the issue is 1 nutrient after co2 and that is phosphorus. I bet if you dosed with phosphate only, you would have the exact same results. Phosphate salts usually come with potassium as well and I believe it's like 8 bucks from GLA. Anyways, that would be a good experiment if you ever ran into the same issue again.
Thanks for sharing that your experience matches mine. It helps bolster the theory for all of us. Phosphorous appears to have been the nutrient my tank was lacking most as well. When really assessing the ingredients on the bottle, I discovered that Seachem Phosphorous is even more diluted than their other ferts. It’s basically bottled water. I am actually considering adding more phosphorous to the tank in addition to dosing the APT as my easy baseline. Thanks for the recommendation to consider GLA. I might make an update video if I try this.
Mmm, you're so yummy 😋💦
Can I get a link for the auto fertilizer you use?
Sure! Here you go: www.chihirosaquaticstudio.com/products/chihiros-dosing-pump-system?srsltid=AfmBOoqdmUvkjA5X1ZUH9ZI-_agKv1QktzfaLRNIBkizqCyvEo5iswxm
@@undr_life You're the best. Thanks!
@ Happy to help! It’s a great product in my opinion.
I dont run a CO2 tank but my plants do great! I have to trim them/ pull out runners every 2 weeks or they take over the whole tank lol. All I’ve been using is home-made osmocote root tabs and Thrive brand liquid fertilizer. The only time i’ve had to battle algae is when I didnt cap my aquasoil with 2 inches of sand. I’m assuming the excess nutrients were leaching into the water column. I definitely recommend looking into thrive and checking out the nutrient profile. It seems like a really great deal for the price.
@@tannerbroadwell5488 That’s awesome that you’re having such great success with a minimal setup! I actually have one plant that completely died in my tank with added CO2 but is thriving in a different tank of mine with no added CO2. Adding carbon dioxide is pretty much vital in the tank I made the video about, but definitely isn’t needed for certain plants and setups. Also, I haven’t heard of Thrive. I’ll look them up!
wow, I imagine that costs too much $$.. Normally I'd only supervise the lighting time+siesta for my tank.
I love a good low-maintenance tank. Costs are a lot lower now than they were with the old fertilizer. The doser was around $100 I think, but that’s not really needed when dosing only about 1mL per day. If I had switched ferts earlier, I probably wouldn’t have bought the dosing pump.
From what I understand plants need 3 things: nutrients, light, and CO2. These need to be balanced for optimal balance and growth. The one aspect people usually do wrong is too much light (too bright/strong). In this case, you will need to ramp up nutrients and CO2. Off course every type of plant is different and has different needs.
Thanks for weighing in! Those three factors are important according to my research and experience also. I’ve got my light set to just 25% and the plants still absolutely chow down on nutrients. If that light was set to 100, I’d be doing my water changes with pure undiluted fertilizer, haha!
There are wonderful successes without supplemental co2.
@@toddbigeasy I totally agree. I’ve seen plenty of awesome tanks that don’t use added CO2.
@@toddbigeasy sure, animals in the tank produce CO2, after all. Your light intensity just needs to be adequate.
rarely have I seen a video not getting to a flawed point for so long and in such a weird way ... and what a useless conclusion at the end
Glad to hear I did NOT get to a flawed point! 😉

My guy, buy your own macros in powder form and mix your own. It will cost you pennies on the dollar. EDIT* lol, sorry just made it to the part where you discuss this.
Haha, good call. I knew that if I didn’t mention dry salts, I’d get ROASTED in the comments. I’m sure it’s a perfect solution for many tanks.
superb content, really liked the previous one as well "doing it all together at a same time". Can you make a video on N-P-K(20-20-20 % ) water soluble Fertiliser in a video.
Thank you so much! I’m really glad you enjoyed the videos. By “water soluble fertilizer” are you referring to the method of mixing dry salts at home?
Awesome video, im a year into the hobbu but still dont know a lot about fertz so this actually helped quiet a bit!
Thank you! I’m glad to hear this was helpful to you.
That stock video of the kid crying was weird 😅
Haha, I’ll give you that. If it makes you feel any better, the stock footage description said he was just crying due to a bug bite on his eye.
@@undr_life yeah this is the world today... a bug bites the eye then let't keep him crying while we get the lights right and take his shirt off and make some stock video....
I hate BBA and hair algae. It's the worst. My treatment is lowering the light levels and treating the issue with medication.
Thanks for sharing what works for you! What medication do you use? Something like Flourish Excel?
@undr_life I used an interpet product, I'm from the UK.
@ Ah, that’s a brand I don’t think we have in the US. Glad to hear that worked for you!
I have a less methodic approach to my tanks. Everything is fairly low maintenance. I mostly only do water top-offs - the only water changes I ever do is just when I decide to do spot cleaning with a turkey baster and need to bring the water level back up. I use liquid ferts and root tabs only if I've done a trim and I want to give a little boost OR if a plant needs a little TLC, but I only dose that one time. I try to give my tanks "seasons" so it's not always in a state of spring/summer, it can also have rest periods like fall and winter. I start everything with just shrimp in my planted setup - this always includes some sort of floating plant. When they have successfully bred a few rounds, that's usually when I add fish and a few strategic snails (nerites for glass algae, diggers for aeration/population control, mystery for dead plant matter). The added snails help especially with the added fish bioload. The combination of all their lil poops help fertilize my plants. I've yet to have any algae explosions, ammonia spikes or mass deaths. The only thing I really monitor is my GH/KH levels because my lazy top-offs could build up over time, but I've yet to really see any major changes in that either. I also make my own snail food which also benefit my shrimps due to the calcium carbonate.
“Lil poops” haha! Thanks for sharing your methods. I have a tank in another room that I treat pretty similarly to what you described. Picky plants like Monte Carlo don’t survive in that tank, but that aquarium is also much simpler to care for. It’s nice not having every aquarium be high maintenance - I don’t have enough time for that, haha! Also, I’ve never tried giving my aquariums seasons. That’s a cool concept. Do you mainly alter the temperature and light duration to simulate the seasons, or is there more to it?
@undr_life Monte Carlo is indeed picky. I loved using it on some dragon stone that peaked out of a small mini pond. Kept moist but also flourished due to the emersed growth! And as for seasons...for a rest period I do no dosing of any kind which includes minerals for shrimps/snails. I decrease tanks temperature a bit to lower any fish breeding behaviors, feed a little less as well. Ultimately, I found the behaviors of fish more favorable...less aggressive than if you kept them in a tank suited for summer/mating time.
@@AquaJoyClub Thanks for the information! I'm always learning.
@@undr_life Me too! My style is a blend of Father Fish and George Farmer...natural ecosystem, but also kept scaped/maintained. Father Fish goes as far as not needing to feed any of the fish since all the food source is built in the tank, but I find his tanks a lil too messy for my taste...I believe you can have organized mess...it's lived in, but not a hoarder house :P. I like to look at my tanks that way...am I building a nice condo...who could inhabit this condo..or am I building a low-rise apartment complex :P.
@@AquaJoyClub I appreciate tanks all across that spectrum. The fact that everyone can have their own style is a sign that aquarium keeping truly is an art form. It’s nice that you’ve found a style you enjoy most!
I had a system collapse like that a quite while back and I went down the exact same rabbit whole of problems! You were spot on with the nutrient information. That's what solved the problem for me as well.
Wow, good to know that our experience lines up so closely! Knowing that, we can apply what we’ve learned to future tanks with all the more confidence.
Wow....nice content but surprisingly no subscribers
Thank you! I don't post videos super frequently, so it's a slow build. Thanks for leaving a comment!

Cool white is definitely the call, the warm white would have been good as a front light but for the bounce effect you were going for the bluer tone is way better.
I think you’re right - it was mostly because of the bounce effect. If I turn off the frame lights and just turn on my warm room lights, the frame still looks fine.
Man that would be so much fun! I could get lost of days there trying to find "The one" The frame looks brilliant as well! Good call swapping to the cool white!
Yeah, it’s like real-life Pokemon Go, haha! I got obsessed with that game for a short time and it was the same addictive feeling: “What will I find if I walk juuuust over there?…I’ll search just five more minutes…” I’m glad you dig the cool white frame! Couldn’t stand the yellow, haha!
@@undr_life That's a good comparison! You need to find yourself a Megalodon tooth for the next frame!
@IndoorEcosystem That would be epic!

Looks like a sewer
Well, this is where all the fish do their business. So for them, yes. It is totally a sewer.
@undr_life i love it tho, its a beautiful sewer (seriously i love it)
@SADCAH Haha, thank you.
I feel like this concept could be applied for a variety of species. Smaller tubular versions would work great for micro geckos
Yeah, they're not limited to being for fish. Using these for geckos sounds like an awesome idea! Check out this video from Indoor Ecosystems where the modules were incorporated into a vampire crab ecosystem: th-cam.com/video/KQiObZoB8BY/w-d-xo.html
I love the idea of a more artistic nature that you were going for, unfortunately as we all witnessed, it's not viable to have plants inside to go for the look you were going for I would love to see you take a crack at it again! Because we can't see inside of the box i think it would be the only time to allow the sinful act of adding plastic plants, that way you can have the illusion of plants inside casting shadows, especially if you don't want the glowing green effect That's my idea anyways
Good point - this is probably the only case where plastic plants could be used without it being noticed that they're fake. I hadn't considered that.
I'm an Architect who's also into aquascaping - this really hits the spot, man. Keep it up!!
Thanks so much! I drew a lot of inspiration from architecture when designing this.
GREAT CONTENT :D
Thank you!!

springtails and isopods? underwater?
I think it was to eat the mold, not to keep them in there
Exactly. I scooped the isopods out as I filled the aquarium with water, and the springtails became live fish food, haha!
@@undr_life I also add springtails for the same purpose before I filling the aquarium with water
Keep going man! Love your videos
Thanks so much for the support!
It's grown in nicely! Fissdens moss was a grreat choice for scale! The front module being overgrown really sets the tone for this scape as well!
Thanks for the kind feedback! 🙂
I like the concept but the design looks very "unnatural". Almost like a post apocalyptic scene you would find in the video game Horizon Zero Dawn.
Yeah the plan was to make the Modules look architectural rather than trying to create fake plastic rocks or anything like that.
Maybe make them small, medium & larger sizes for larger tanks that house mBuna African cichlids. They are a cave & rock dwellers & would like these hidden caves
Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll likely add more sizes sometime in the future.
PLA degrades and starts dissolving after 6 months, Still nice build 👍
Thanks for your appreciation of the build! It’s been more than 6 months since I set up the aquarium and there haven’t been any problems with the Modules. The spider wood twigs I used have degraded quite a bit, but not the 3D prints. I have another aquarium with a PLA print that’s been unaffected for more than 2 years. I can’t speak for every filament from every manufacturer, but normal PLA only breaks down quickly if it’s processed by an industrial composter.
I can’t wait to place an order! I hope they are in stock soon. Love the way these work and look. Amazing style and creativity.
Thanks so much for the appreciation! I’m hoping to have them officially for sale by some time next week. I see that you shared your email so you can be notified. Stay tuned! 🙂
Potentially interesting, but the concept was not pulled off. Go back to the drawing board!
