It's becoming clear that with all the brain and consciousness theories out there, the proof will be in the pudding. By this I mean, can any particular theory be used to create a human adult level conscious machine. My bet is on the late Gerald Edelman's Extended Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. The lead group in robotics based on this theory is the Neurorobotics Lab at UC at Irvine. Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of language. A machine with only primary consciousness will probably have to come first. What I find special about the TNGS is the Darwin series of automata created at the Neurosciences Institute by Dr. Edelman and his colleagues in the 1990's and 2000's. These machines perform in the real world, not in a restricted simulated world, and display convincing physical behavior indicative of higher psychological functions necessary for consciousness, such as perceptual categorization, memory, and learning. They are based on realistic models of the parts of the biological brain that the theory claims subserve these functions. The extended TNGS allows for the emergence of consciousness based only on further evolutionary development of the brain areas responsible for these functions, in a parsimonious way. No other research I've encountered is anywhere near as convincing. I post because on almost every video and article about the brain and consciousness that I encounter, the attitude seems to be that we still know next to nothing about how the brain and consciousness work; that there's lots of data but no unifying theory. I believe the extended TNGS is that theory. My motivation is to keep that theory in front of the public. And obviously, I consider it the route to a truly conscious machine, primary and higher-order. My advice to people who want to create a conscious machine is to seriously ground themselves in the extended TNGS and the Darwin automata first, and proceed from there, by applying to Jeff Krichmar's lab at UC Irvine, possibly. An entire forest in England was scientifically proven to be connected via their root system and communicated with each other...fact! Believe it or not, during my many years as a gardener I had the honor of being thanked by plants and one tree right after having pruned them...the tree lit-up (aura) literally like a Christmas tree during the day, and a large-leafed plant turned it's leaves from it's normal behavior of following the path of the sun and faced me. Needless to say I was speechless and incredulous, and I swear on my soul that this is true. On another earlier occasion while I was deeply thanking mother nature for her beauty in a remote part of Northern California (so remote that the animals and birds hadn't learned to distrust humans), I was lifted out of my body until I was hovering above the surrounding forest and everything in sight was emanating white light...every tree, blade of grass, every rock and plant. I was only 15 and no drugs were involved...deer grazed right next to me, and a bird dried itself next to me by my campfire following some rain. I was so deeply moved by my wonderful time there that I didn't want to leave that place and return to my life or even my family. I didn't even tell anyone about this for almost 10 years because it was so sacred to me, but when I finally did I found out that someone else had been blessed with a similar experience, and that this transformational blessing has a name.. "Oceanic" experience. You can look it up.

I live in Texas I had a stroke It's impossible for me to go down to the DMV to get a damn picture taken. So I don't vote a lot of legal documents I can't sign because I need an ID for a notary and the state of Texas does not give a shit. I'm telling you they do not give a damn about the disabled.

It's actually such bullshit. You can get a temp ID online and before you get your license you still have a state ID. Elderly people have multiple forms of ID.

You need an id to qualify for any federal programs. From welfare, WiC, SNAP or housing assistance, etc. Also, an ID isn't just a driver's license, State ID (cheaper than a Driver's License) or a passport are also forms of ID.
