Fall has come !
Hiked through the beautiful dead leaves covered trails of Fontainebleau.
Found a nice spot to setup camp.
My camp was rather minimalist : poncho as ground cloth, foam mat, and quilt inside a bivy bag.
A hot-air balloon that was flying around at a distance then thought it was a good idea to crash into the trees.
For real, the balloon cracked a tree and broke some branches. The balloon itself was heavily grinding against the trees while the basket was tilting.
I thought this camp was going to evolve in a recovery mission.
Well, they survived. I resumed to do nothing in the woods (my favorite activity) .
For fire starting, I used the classic flint and steel with the backspine of my saw, and a piece of rock.
On morning, I relit the fire using a technique learned from @DavidWestBgood2ppl : basically you push ashes into a tissue paper. It will then carry an ember to a tinder bundle to catch on fire.
David West's channel is one of the best you could hope for learning firecraft.
After some Cowboy Coffee, I cooked meat on coals, and left !

Fall has come, bringing a fresh season of outdoor adventure! Hiked through Fontainebleau's beautiful trails, covered in vibrant autumn leaves, with every step taking in the heart of nature. I found a great spot to set up a minimalist bushcraft camp, using a poncho as a ground cloth, a foam mat, and a quilt inside a bivy bag. a hot-air balloon decided to descend near my camp. it brushed against trees, breaking branches as it struggled to land, turning my peaceful bushcraft campsite into an unexpected rescue-watch. the balloon team survived, allowing me to get back to "doing nothing" in the woods-my favorite outdoor activity.
For fire-making, I used a classic flint and steel approach, striking the back spine of my folding saw against a piece of rock. next morning, I relit the fire using a skill from firecraft expert pushing ashes into tissue paper to carry an ember to a tinder bundle-a technique every bushcrafter should know. David’s an absolute treasure for fire-making skills and wilderness knowledge.
rekindling the morning fire, I brewed some cowboy coffee, savoring the peaceful autumn atmosphere, then cooked meat over coals for a classic bushcraft meal. This trip was all about nature immersion, survival skills, and relaxing solo camping in a beautiful fall landscape. With bushcraft essentials like minimalist camping gear, flint and steel fire-making, and forest cooking, it was a satisfying experience of simple outdoor living.

Holy MOLY! 8-o This was a spectacular film, first of all; the Fall atmosphere is perfect for your emphasis on sound and color! Loved seeing you use your saw blade as a fire steel, and bravo for catching your spark so fast! 😁👍👍 But man... Those people in the baloon had to have come SO close to a full wipeout. I could hardly believe that they managed to right themselves and continue. It's INSANE how close that was to you. 8-o
@TheShurikenZone Fall and winter are definitely the best for my content ! At the closest, they were about 30 meters from me. I got phone pics, that ballon looks way too close it's surreal. At one point, the ballon was about 2/3 its original size due to being compressed, I was sure it was going to rip and they'd fall. I won't forget that one anytime soon. 🦧
@@ARAW-__- Whew... I bet the people on board needed some fresh pairs of pants. 8-/ 🦧
@TheShurikenZone 🤣 BTW the pilot was saying repeatedly : "It's okay, that's perfectly normal" and then "Sorry, I'm very sorry" 🤣
@@ARAW-__- 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I couldn't help but hear that in an outrageous French accent, punctuated with occasional mischievous laughter... "Hon hon hon... Zis is all perféctly normál! hon hon hon... merde!!! hon hon..." etc... 😅👍👍

Another cinematic triumph, brother! Loved every aspect of it, from the cinematography and sound, to all the great cooking and throwing. These films are so relaxing, but also goldmines of practical tips and such, like the little tent peg safety twigs, and using your Spetsnaz shovel to strike your ferro rod. Awesome job, sir. 😁👍👍 Tell me- How was that bread? It looked wonderful.
@TheShurikenZone Thanks, Ryan! That one took so much time and efforts... But at least I can objectively see the quality going up in time 😌 The bread, I don't know why, was smoked when left to rise. First time I open the lid and it's brownish, It was still raw 😳 the bottom was a bit charred so I scrapped it with my SAK saw and it was all good ! Dipped into duck fat 🤤
Belle découverte cette chaîne ! Tes prises sont top, le film est de qualité, et la bouffe a l'air à tomber 🤤 simple et efficace ! Bonne continuation !

@BeccaGrayce Thank you, Becca. I'm glad you could unwind. A campfire in the bush is the best therapy. Sorry I made you hungry 😅🙏
Great movie🎥🍿. I watched from beginning to end. I like your pan. The handle looks to not retain heat from the pan. Do you carry the bigger pot on each trip? I like the knife throwing intermission. Did you sharpen the edges of the shovel? It looks to be a highly useful tool. Oh, I really like how you made that loaf of bread. It looked to be more of a French bread due to lack of other evident ingredients. I make French bread pretty often in the colder months for dipping in stews.
@BACKYARDLUMBERJACK Homemade bread dipped in stew 🤤 Thanks bro ! I'm glad you watched until the end ! Lots of efforts went into this. I even lost 5 hours of editing because of the smaller storage capacity of my phone. 😫 The bigger pot is typically used on longer trips or during colder weather trips. That's how I train knife throwing ! A few sessions a year, unfortunately. Yes, this shovel is a beast. Check out mpl50 on Wikipedia 😁 in this case it is a modified Cold Steel SF Shovel 🫡

@blacksprucesurvival I like throwing the hawk, and just knew it was only a matter of time before I'd broke the original handle. I also wanted to try different sizes of handle, and last but not least, it's just a skill I need 😁
never done mastering a craft, but the details in all of yours paint such a holistic & satisfying (motion) picture! stuff feeds the soul! im eating a meal rn that tastes the same 🤤😂 hope youre taking care!
Thank you, Natalie 😌 Yeah, I need to get good at carving handles, and quickly, seeing the rate at which I destroy them 🦧 Always glad to see you come by ! 😁🖐
Very cool tomahawk. I want to get one. I like the fact that you can make new or custom handles based on your preference. Nice throw!
@BACKYARDLUMBERJACK Thanks brother ! Yeah handle making on the fly is a possibility with hawks, thats why I went this way ratcmher than conventionnal hatchets, although I know I'll try em at some point. Love throwing it !! Very satisfying 😌
@@ARAW-__-Thank you for your display. I hope to have one soon.
@@BACKYARDLUMBERJACK can't wait to see what you'll do with it !! I could use some advice for hawks and shovel throwing 🦧😁
@@ARAW-__- I definitely have more videos coming using these axes. Until I acquire a tomahawk, these will have to suffice. Regardless, I’ll try to make entertaining/informative content with them.
@BACKYARDLUMBERJACK they will do just fine, for sure ! I guess an axe is an axe, regarding throwing. I'll be watching 👊
Ah! Love that slo-mo throwing! Bravo, my friend! 👏👏👏
@@TheShurikenZone Thanks brother 🙏
@@ARAW-__- Well, brother... Too bad you're not here. I just drove past a freshly felled hickory tree. Beautiful. And a few straight branches that were the perfect size for two hachet handles, side by side. And it was sitting out at the street, waiting to be picked up. Welcome to life in Georgia. haha
@@TheShurikenZone 😱 I need to live in the mountains 😭
@@ARAW-__- You would greatly enjoy that, I know. Where I live, it's technically the foothills of the Appalachian mountains... some of the oldest mountains in the world, and formerly part of the same range that once included the Scottish Highlands. 👍👍
@@TheShurikenZone That's crazy. I love mountainous forests. That's where I feel at peace.
Love this hawk !! 😁
Hey man where did you get that dope hoodie I’m looking for a hoodie like that but more draped down more passed my hair
@b_side8669 Hey man, I bought it secondhand from a tourist that's been to Mexico. Pure wool. They make great ponchos.
awesome job bro i need new handle for my pole axe :D
@AdamCeladin haha thanks brother ! What I learned is that for tool, decent is okay, but for throwing, you need high quality. Probably an ashwood log, split in half, and using the outer portion (remove inner bark and pith). Also, fiber orientation is important. I'm not at thst level yet, but I will. 🫡
@@ARAW-__- I have to do some experiments but probably next year. here in Mountains winter is coming very soon :P
@AdamCeladin Yes, I think it will be a cold winter with lots of snow 🙏 Good news for bushcraft, not good for throwing 😅
Oh, you put so much effort into every video! Simply unique and captivating content man! 👏👏
@ervinslens Thanks Ervin ! Trying my best each time 🫡
The CS Trail Hawk is still probably one of the best tomahawks out there, and they're cheap! Lightest, best balanced, smallest.... but still packs a big punch for chopping and splitting reasonable sized wood... and, of course, backup skull splitter 💀. Always a winner for needing axe work but don't want to haul around axe weight.
@@pennsyltuckyreb9800Hi Penny 😁🖐️ I love it ! First hawk / axe for me, and sbsolutely loving it ! 😁
@ARAW-__- Not sure if you already did, but take a file to the top, inside edge of the eye and round off the sharp edge. This will make it secure better to the handle.
@pennsyltuckyreb9800 Yeah, the burr was crazy aggressive on the wooden handle ! So far, I do love it, but I need to sharpen it after throwing. It is hard on the edge, especially when it falls on rocks 😁
Nicely done well executed. The settlers and natives used to use handfuls of sand to sand the shaft. They would hold the sand in their hand gripping the shaft and going back and forth to kind of sand it down I hope that makes sense. Another thing that was used was Sandstone can be used like a sanding block. Just a way of getting rid of all the irregular edges and any potential points where you might end up with splinters. I'm sure you already know this but I'm going to throw it out there of course the number one wood for an axe handle is going to Hickory. Other good choices are Elm and Ash. You want a long fiber Hardwood I'm not sure what's native over there in France but that's the best advice I can give you brother.
@@charlesartificer2158 Thanks for chimming in Charles ! For sure Hickory is the best all around wood for handles. Unfortunately, there is none in France. The next best thing is ash tree, and that's what I'd typically use, but there was that handy piece of applewood so I gave it a go. 😁 A friend sourced me a beautiful, curve piece of oak that will make a fine Parang handle, using the curvature... I need to look into elm... I'll try and find some 😁
@ARAW-__- The handles of my hook knives are made of elm, and they've proven tremendously strong. I think you must split elm when it's green, though, as I believe i's outstanding feature is that it does not like to split, when dry. 😯👍👍
@TheShurikenZone Now, sourcing green wood is where things get complicated... But that's good to know, Ryan! 😁
@ARAW-__- Aye. 8-/ hah But you can always rip it with a saw, if necessary.
Ooo man... I was planning on asking you to let me know how that handle held up over time, throughout the whole video. 8-/ I reckon it was a good learning experience, though, and that's so important. I loved this film, and the fire lit scenes, in particular, were wonderful. 👍👍 Back to the carving... Do you know what went wrong, at this point?
Haha 🤣 I think the handle was use worthy, but couldn't handle being thrown. Also, I picked up that lumber on the forest floor, alrwady cut for at least some months... in the top piece (thst I cut at the end) there are some tunnels so the head of the handle was weak, maybe from dryrot, maybe from bugs 😔 In any case, it was a good practice ! 😁
@ARAW-__- Ah, gotcha. I will say this- Having the pith still in the finished handle reduces the strength, considerably. If you can, look for a piece of timber that is large enough to split in half, and make one complete handle from each half. This will result in a much more durable handle, for sure. It's also OK to do most of the carving while the wood is still green, using these protocols, making the job much faster and easier. Just a few bits of food for thought... from the Nerd Zone. 😅
@@TheShurikenZone yeah that's what I need to get into... But sourcing a harwood log is an entirely other thing... But hey, for throwing, I came to the conclusion you can't go halfway...
@ARAW-__- Man oh man, do I know what you mean, regarding the sourcing of a hardwood log! 8-o My senses are constantly attuned to scan every street for newly fallen trees and freshly cut timber! Of course... I get the idea that we may have many more trees here, outside of proper wilderness areas, than you do. In short... I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you, brother! If you do find a log, split it in half right away, and wrap it up... in kitchen plastic wrap, if you have it on hand. This will work to avoid as much splitting as possible, before you get to carving! Also... Maybe sharpen up that axe, and learn to do a bit of rough carving with it, as time goes on. It saves SO much time and effort. 😯👍👍
@TheShurikenZone A friend just dropped me two gorgeous pieces of oak , so I'll be making more carving soon (off camera, probably). I totally should have sharpened my hawk. After maybe two hours of throwing (and falling on rocks... it was DULL. That mora has a decent working edge. Renoving the bulk with the hawk would have been the right move, I didn't because of my axe wielding proficiency 😅 I'll play around with firewood some nights around the fire to get good at it. 🫡
Tomahawk (Cold Steel Trail Hawk) = Not sponsored, bought full price (45€) amzn.to/3VcgSoZ This is an Appletree sapling that was cut by loggers. It was straight enough I thought I could make a handle out of it. I'm no carver by any mean, but I recently started taking handle-making seriously. I need to be able to craft a decent quality handle. Throwing is one of the most destructive use you could put a tool through. That's why I need to make new handles, and why I'll need to keep them coming. Great video brother! Awesome knife review without saying a word. That was an impressive amount of consecutive sticks. I appreciate the mention, that was very kind of you. @BACKYARDLUMBERJACK Thank you, brother 😁 People need to go to your channel, great content on knife throwing and self-reliance. I can wholeheartedly recommend this knife, although I'm not a good thrower, but at least I can attest : it's tough ! The foothold was more of a layeral stress test, as I wouldn't want to ditch a knife, but hey, you do what you gotta do. 😁 Yeah, that's what I'm telling CS, but it's not happening for now. I still have some products of their to put in video. For now, I'm totally satisfied with the few tools I bought from them. Thanks again bro 😁👊

@ARAW-__- "...not smart for a thrower." Meanwhile, I throw my spoon carving knife (of all things, usually the sharpest I own), occasionally. 😅
@@TheShurikenZone That confirms my theory 🦧 😁🙏
@ARAW-__- Yep. haha There you go. Yeah, I'll throw most everything that's pointy, on occasion, just to broaden the sample size. One never knows what sort of situation will crop up, and being prepared to throw anything seems like the way to go. 🙂👍👍

Thanks for tagging me, brother. 😄👍👍 Awesome film, as usual. I like seeing this throwing knife tested for pracrical use, and it certainly seems like it would be well worth having along, in the field! Now, then... The uncut pravtice footage was absolutely spectacular, man. Ypu know I love to see that sort of stuff, more than anything. And the amazing part... We could watch you get into the groove, real time- You had quite a nuber of perfect throws, all in a row! 😮 For someone who practices like... a hour and 35 minutes per month... your throwing is getting very good; I wouldn't want to be on the wrong end of that knife! 8-/ Bravo! 👏👏👏
@TheShurikenZone Haha, you're a great thrower and I learned tons on your channel, Ryan 😁 Couldn't list 10% of what I learned, in fact, as now it is more instinctual form than something that can be recited. You raised an important point there ! So, I wouldn't go on a camping trip throwing around my only survival tool, but at the same time if I bring along a throwing knife (either a weapon or toy) at least I'd like it to have some capabilities in case I lose my main gear and I'm stuck with the throwing knife. Shouldn't happen if all is well prepared, but who plans to be in a survival situation anyway ? 🤔 "Failing to prepare is preparing to fail". Normally, I'd cut the throwing scene to give it a bit more cadence... but in that case, I felt it was cool to see real use that wouldn't look like a highlight reel. Thanks, my friend !! 🫡
@ARAW-__- Ah, well said, indeed- When in the backcountry, it's always important to have a backup knife. And... When not in the backcountry, (so long as it's legal)... it's important to have a backup knife. haha And one would only throw their last weapon at the UTTERMOST end of need. But throwing your backup knife is solid plan, sometimes. 😉 Going about town, I always carry two knives- A utility knife (which you saw in the shrimp cooking video), and another knife (which you saw taking a nap with Ladycat). If I got into some sort of ridiculously bad situation, the other knife would be my primary defensive tool, and the utility knife might become a shuriken, if the necessity arose. Moving back to your throwing, you really are becoming formidable with that Cold Steel; working on consistency is now all you really need! And thanks so much, once again, for your very kind words. When I started my channel, I wanted it for documentation (both of my own progress, and the art itself), and I hoped that it might also help some folks who were in the initial learning phase. If it has functioned in the latter capacity, I am very happy, indeed. 🙂
@TheShurikenZone Do you train with your EDC knives ? QcQ and throwing 🦧 I read somewhere that russian soldiers realized that when you shoot at someone, he shoots back. When you throw a shovel at him, he runs away to dodge it 😁 it's only in that capacity that I consider my throws to be viable. I'd throw without pressure (since I dont need to hit anything) and then either flee or close the distance and then Chimp Wrestle (you grab and pull whatever flesh you can) or King Kong hammer fists. Your videos, to me, are both inspiring (seeing you train with dedication and consistency) and purely functional: I like to engrave proper form into my memory. It's like learning a language. It needs to flow naturally, and if you can't practice, at least you know what it's supposed to look/sound like. 🫡
