While the movie is good I do agree with your critques, I definitely think the living family matters and the backstory connecting hector's death and the current state of the family before the movie started definitely needed more fleshing out. It played the idea of generational trauma really lightly and daresay comedically which is something I dislike now that you brought it to my attention. There was definitely substance but pixar decided not to flesh it out further, in the film you can see Miguel's father doesn't exactly agree with the whole "no music" policy, when Elena smashes the guitar he does actually reach out to call her and try to stop her, and during the final remember me he's actually the one to stop Elena from stopping Miguel so there certainly was substance and conflicted feelings about the family dynamic but Pixar never really tried to expand upon this, and yeah the fact they just forget about Elena breaking Miguel's guitar later is a definite gripe something definitely should've addressed that. Apparently there's a novel/book expanding upon the family's backstory but it's honestly something that should've been included in the film. I definitely think they should've included a flashback of the great great grandmother and Coco as part way through the film it's heavily implied that the great great grandmother was the one who was pushing all the music hate, and Coco never actually agreed with it. She says and I quote "I wanted to forget you, and I wanted Coco to forget you too" to Hector, and during the final scenes we see that Coco held onto the piece of Hector's face on the family portrait, which implies that someone (most likely Imelda) ripped off Hector's face on the portrait, and Coco in an act of defiance and love towards her father kept that ripped piece with her so she could remember her father. I'm glad Encanto learned from Coco's mistakes and actually addresses the whole family dynamic, the message and direction of the movie was extremely similiar to Coco without the whole, aspiring musician thing, but they do actually address the broken family dynamic and how abusive Abuela is, with them actually fleshing out the family members and even the father showing how he doesn't really agree with Abuela's actions and choices but must go along to keep the family together. Overall Coco is still good but it definitely could've been better.

Hey man... Your criticism about the Rivera family and the way the acted towards Miguel is completely valid. The movie should have developed those characters a little better, BUT... As a member of a latin-american family, well... I can say that the "breaking the guitar right in front of him" thing is something that many parents here would probably do. Abuse of this type is very normalized here.

We love it because it's real life for us. I had to fight for my life to rise above the trauma and suicide and then had to dive back in all the way deep to do the same for my sister and mother. And it wasn't even strictly for them but for my newborn baby brother so that he will never experience the same trauma. Basically it's just me trying super hard to keep my immediate family as no contact as possible but I've been away for at least 3 years, they gripe to me about the few contacts they have. Hispanic, Latino, indigenous/Catholic..yatta yatta ,/- (similar) families are corrupt, toxic, abusive, i wanna say religious for the phrase used a lot of the time as an excuse " god says""honor thy parents""""".......(Which isn't even the actual saying)...... As a " i can abuse, molest, torture, control you as much as I want because I have a god given right". I've hade to give myself clouser in lucid dreams because I know my family will never apologize. Not to me. Not to my sister. And definitely not to my mother.

I just saw it last night and i thought it was excellent. The special effects were really impressive for the time and I loved the use of miniatures during certain scenes. All the characters looked real dirty too, it doesn’t look like anyone just came out of an actor’s trailer. I can’t believe it got so many bad reviews, I swear people don’t know good westerns.

The best movie ever made by Warner Bros. Animation is "The Iron Giant" and Period.

Encanto was much, much worse in this aspect. Because in encanto they didn't just break an object like a guitar, they ostracized and demonized Bruno for years and then Bruno just comes back and everything seems to be okay. The message in Coco is that while breaking the guitar was awful, it was just a guitar, it isn't worth leaving your family because someone broke a guitar.

It's weird to me that in the age of broken homes and single-parent families and all the trauma that causes, why are we getting so many movies that focus on things like generational family trauma? It just reeks of an anti-family bias

The biggest plotholes being that 1. after music is banned by imelda, coco still decides to uphold the ban upon becoming the matriarch despite secretly continuing to love music and love the memory of her father despite no reason to keep the ban going as her word would be law. And... 2. Ernestonde la cruz chooses the nuclear option in killing hector and taking his music notebook instead of just allowing them to break up and choosing the much easier option of asking hector to write music for him while ernesto plays and splitting the profits. instead he tries to ride out what surely amounts to only a handful of songs for as long as possible and hopes people dont tire of his lack of new material in the following years, his only salvation being that he died so young in that accident that he didnt have to face fading into irrelevance in life.

I know this is a video about CoCo, BUT THANK YOU for speaking on Buck in Chicken Little in a better manner than most people will take the time to actually reevaluate his character and look at why he is most likely the way he is on a deeper level. I think people remember the worst about buck from when they were younger and refuse to watch it again as an adult under a logical lens because they deeply misunderstood him. He isn't a good dad (for reasons that are definitely there!) but he tried to make up for that in the last act, and if there was a sequel I whole heartedly believe that movie would fix his reputation.

I'm pretty sure the movies message was about letting go of hatred towards nothing and moving on and accepting of mistakes. The grandma is absolutely pissed the whole movie and she passed that down to her granddaughter while coco had her fathers love of music and kindness. Right when the wife sees that her husband was murdered she realized how wrong she was and forgoves him and then when Miguel plays the music for coco causing her to remember and speak for the first time in a long time the family realizes there mistakes and move on. Even the husband realizes his mistake of leaving his family and apologizes for it moves on.

Tbh it reminds me a bit of my family, mine isn't as bad as coco's of course but the whole 'family is important" thing gets used more as an excuse instead of a motivation. My parents have learned over the years to be less overbearing and controlling (mostly from me and my siblings becoming increasingly disobedient, big W), but frankly the whole "Generational Trauma" thing also kinda just gets thrown around as an excuse. Most of the aspect in their family that I recognize kinda just comes more from being overbearing, controlling, and using excuses instead of just recognizing a fault and attempting to do something to mend it and recognize what needs to be worked on. If it were up to me on how Coco could have gone, maybe they could make music something that personally impacted Elena as well in a way that while still unjustified would at least make more sense. Like idk, maybe like Miguel she goes out to pursue music, and then falls in love with another musician. the relationship lasts a few years, it's all romantic and nice, they're earning a good amount of money from music and all's well, and then all of a sudden he leaves her, and takes all their money, sheet music, and instruments, and abandons her with a note saying that he's never going to come back as he recently got a deal that would make him rich. This forces her to go back to her family and continue the shoe making business. This experience confirming for her that music is bad, and that it tears apart families. This results in her wanting this to never happen to anyone else in the family, and getting ever more bitter about it as she never actually deals with the trauma she experienced. Then Miguel comes along and all that stuff happens, he runs away, and after a little while Elena realizes that he's not just going out for a bit, but is actually missing, and this scares her a lot, resulting in the whole family searching for coco in every nook and cranny, trying to find him trying to make sure he's ok and through this experience Elena starts realizing it's her fault and that her hate of music, and what she had done, resulted in Miguel leaving and going missing. Over time as he's missing she has more and more time to reflect on her own trauma and the conflicting feelings inside her and comes to the conclusion that her family is more important than her hatred of music, obviously Miguel for this time is stuck in the afterlife and doesn't know this is happening, so he's still dealing with his predicament as is shown. Eventually Miguel returns, he tries to go through Elena as she briefly tries to stop him but then lets him pass the scene plays out and ends. Then in a scene focused on Elena's personal growth she's seen crying as she talks to herself about how she nearly did it again, that she was going to have the same behavior as before that resulted in Miguel leaving and being emotionally hurt. She decides it's time to overcome her hatred for music and to make it up to Miguel and purchases an instrument that she used to play many many years ago, and goes to talk to Miguel about how he's doing and to apologize for destroying his guitar. Obviously he's still very sad and angry that it happened, and she tells him that she's decided to fully embrace that he is a musician and idk, maybe tries to connect with him about music, talk to him about his interests and for the first time show support for his passion. Eventually she brings out her instrument and starts to play, surprising Miguel, resulting in him asking her why she's playing despite hating music, and she tells him that she used to play music long ago, tells him about her story and apologizes for how she's projected her own trauma onto him. He asks her if they want to play together and she agrees, and they both play a song together at the celebration, she lets him do a solo on the guitar as she is happy that he is pursuing his dream, a tear rolling down her eye maybe as she smiles, and then end scene and whatnot. Obviously I just wrote this together over like, maybe 30 minutes but I feel it would be a way that Coco as a movie could have addressed the themes in a more congruent way, showing a proactive resolution to the issue of generational trauma and also an importance on family, showing that family is important and hence you need to actively work to be better for your family members, basically in this situation an idealized form of that where the whole family works through their problems so that they can fully support Miguel instead of holding him back. The thing I wrote up is basically 100% focused on how you could make Elena a better character, it would be cool to explore how you could deal with Miguel's situation to make it less of a forced "family is important" thing, and more just realistic to a kid in a dangerous situation trying to do what they can with the situation in front of them instead of just using him as a pawn for a message like the movie did. Maybe something like making him seem more like he just did that to survive, and giving him scenes where he's having to heal from the trauma he experienced rather than just being fine all of a sudden. I just don't want my comment to be too much longer lol

You're not supposed to side with the family, you're supposed to side with Miguel. Dunno why you think we're supposed to side with them. We don't need to know more about them. Also, Miguel's abuela's name is Elena, Ee-lay-nuh. Not Ellen-uh. You've gotten everything wrong about this movie but I'm too high right now to articulate it. Just know that I'm disappointed.

Honestly now that I’m older I can see the flaws in this movie. I used to watch this movie over and over when I was like 5. This movie still holds place in my heart and I have a figure and shirt from it now the second one’s out. When I was younger this movie was my favorite movie and it’s still on my tops but it went from 10/10 to 8/10

I'm mexican, and since Day 1 I thought Coco was overrated. Not because it was a bad film, but because I felt bored by many of the elements on it. How bureaucratic it felt, how eh the part where Miguel was looking for a clue to get to meet Ernesto, and the hole part was also boring for me. Suffice to say I never liked the characters that much, and boy does this video reinforces this idea. Sorry, but Book of Life will always be the superior Dia de Muertos mainstream movie.

Raya: The Last Dragon has the message of "trust everyone" despite people acting untrustworthy being what drives the plot, so that tops this in terms of a terrible message
