Don’t Hate the Player: The Most NASCAR Controversial Championship Yet? (Phoenix Analysis)
The field had one job: do not let the No. 22 get to Phoenix. It seemed like they had accomplished that after the ROVAL, but a disqualification from Alex Bowman changed everything.
With new life in the playoffs, Joey Logano took full advantage of his second chance capturing a win at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and an automatic berth into the Championship 4.
And from there, the story writes itself, Joey Logano, in an even numbered year, seals his fate and wins his third NASCAR Cup Series title.
What has the reaction been like online? What do the playoffs look like going forward?
Join Taylor Kitchen to chat about it all in this episode of Above The Yellow Line.

I also forgot to mention that Sonoma moving to July is one thing that I have a issue with the reason why I have a issue with it because of the weather cause it’s crazy hot I’m talking ridiculously hot blistering hot 🥵 but Jesus Christ they could’ve been smart to put Sonoma in may or march that’s why I have a issue with Sonoma moving to July but the In Season Tournament 🏟️ can’t wait to see how it plays out for the cup series next year

The last ATYL Race Recap of 2024. Had fun watching each and every Episode all year! Can’t wait to come back next season along with whatever offseason content you have to deliver
We don't hate him. He's a good driver. We are just sick of NASCAR itself. Way too much messing with everything. Nit picking what used to be just raw racing and building.
WTG team Penske Fourpete next year, Blaney wins his second cup title in 2025!
Larson was the driver who stopped Blaney from winning. If Blaney had caught up to Joey's car sooner, he would have had a much better chance of passing him and winning the championship.
Sorry, I hate Joey Logano and have from his first race.
I think that Nascar needs to Ditch Phoenix and relocate the Championship Weekend to Nashville instead of Homestead.
In your section closing a chapter there’s more people from announcers from PRN Doug Rice from MRN Jeff Strigel.
RIP Bobby Allison
ATYL with looming announcements and the 11 car in need of sponsorship? Coincidence????? .......yeah, it's just coincidence. I'll start off by saying that Phoenix has improved in the last two or three seasons. Last year and this year were good and memorable Cup races, at least for me. The other two national series also seem to race well there now. I still haven't seen the Xfinity race due to the way CW streams, but I look forward to seeing it in full. Congrats to Justin Allgaier on that. He was the one I was most hoping to see win. He was also alongside Custer as my picks for the favorite. I also got the top two correct for Cup, but reversed. My approach to watching racing has always been to care overwhelmingly about the individual races, and consider any championship drama to be a bonus. I get why they moved away from the old format 20 years ago, especially with TV being more important than it had been before. The champ was often decided a race or two ahead of the final race. I get it. I use the same approach to the current system. I don't love it. I don't hate it. I will at least say that in the seasons I have watched, I never thought a champion ended up being someone I didn't consider championship caliber. Logano may have had a rocky season, but he's also among the elite now in general terms. If I had to make a suggestion on what could make the system better, I'm inclined to say get rid of "win and you're in" and then significantly boost the points for winning and maybe top-five finishes.
I think it's perfectly acceptable to hate the player as well as the game.
PS most people don't realize that don't hate the player hate the game is what people say to justify their shitty behavior....
I know people have taken the old points system and applied it to current NASCAR to see who would have been champion under the old system. Has anyone ever done this in reverse? It would be like Geoff Bodine being declared champion or Ricky Rudd or even Derrick Cope. I mean, that is essentially the world we are living in now...mid-pack drivers who occasionally won being declared champion. Harry Gant won every race for a month and never got called champion. Joey had 7 top 5s for an entire season...and one of those was the race where he ran 15th the whole day and then won because everyone ran out of gas due to 25 laps of overtime.
As fans, we should not hate Joey Logano for winning the championship. It's the same as Jimmie Johnson winning 7 titles under the Chase format. We should express our anger and frustration at Steve O'Donnell and the suits of NASCAR for creating this mess.
This should be a no-brainer. It's called HOMESTEAD. Start in Florida, go round the nation, finish in Florida. It's too aesthetically pleasing to ignore.
Nah, I still hate the player. Congrats to the team for winning the game though!
Respect
Stewart handled that very well. He probably knew he was wrong and he admitted to it. Drivers should pay attention to how he handles adversity.
Cant stand the format! Sure Winston days you got a champ 3-4 races to go, BUT so what? At least you didn’t have Champions with a 15th-place average finish throughout the season!!! Thank you for your videos Taylor ❤
It's called TV entertainment and keeping fans interest. There is a chance the format of the playoffs changes
WORST. CHAMPION. EVER
Why?
Adam Alexander Hopefully Takes Over on The CW Xfinity Race
Love Adam Alexander!
Been Watching Since 88 Old Way We Knew who the Champion was in September. Im a Fan I Love the Playoffs I Think Its So Much Better. Trust Me Young Ones Its So much better
Dang. So many of the iconic sponsors are gone.
Such a sad time
NASCAR is so much fun on The Video Game side than it is Watching it on TV
Excited to play more NASCAR games on the @abovetheyellowline channel!
Well hey don't worry about it y'all Joey logano is now a 3 time champion and i know y'all are upset about it but don't worry we're just pretend like our favorite driver won the championship instead and come tomorrow it be so yesterday and haven't you heard we're all gonna be okay so don't worry about it and just get ready for the 2025 season and if y'all want to just do watch Xfinity series or trucks instead of cup or just watch form February to August instead next year if you don't want to watch the last 10 races.😊
put it in VEGAS PODCASTERS ARE LIKE NASCAR FANS AOUT 80 % DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THE PLAY OFF'S ARE FOR
I don't see the championship race being any SMI owned track
It's a system. If people don't like it, why they each and every Sunday forcing themselves to watch it? 🤣
I think people love to hate the system. Is creates talking points and drama, which fuels the social media fire. However, I think the playoff format has been pushed too far. Time to reign it in. Nevertheless, this season has been one to remember!
@1400hpnextgen7 ok enjoy that now let us enjoy the play off's then everyone is happy see how easy that is you got the #45 we got the #22 and #45 all is good both can turn off any time they wish let nascar roll on
Can i hate both player and the game? If not i hate the game but playoffs needs tweaking and hoping the championship 🏆 race move back to homestead Miami or other tracks maybe las Vegas.
why no one shows up long drive from rooms have to fly in
Valid!
New York giants beat patriots twice after barely making into the playoffs.
Imagine in NFL if team went undefeated then lost playoffs and Super Bowl but we’re still champions. Well that’s the old nascar system.
Apples and oranges
@@ultrainstinctdad4538 gosh when will football comparisons stop?🤦♂️ I don't understand how people don't get that it's impossible to compare a sport where you compete against one rival at a time to the sport where you compete against THE SAME 35 RIVALS WEEK IN AND WEEK OUT!
@@JJRacer43How? That's the system they have, 15th has to have a chance of winning, if not then there's no point of the playoffs
I will hate both the player and the game
Yay Joey
He had to earn the win today!
I dont hate the player. Nevertheless still 15th in points and a fraud champion. Titles mean nothing anymore fix the format nascar
NASCAR absolutely has to look at the format in the off season.
@@ATYLMedia they understand that if we question them we’re bots, but if we praise them we’re fans.
Nascar is making insane amounts of money your opinion dosent matter
@@midwesttrainchasers8587 are they making as much money as 10 years ago?
@Angelmunoz_19 yes they are
I think it's interesting that considering the format of how we determine the champion in this final race, that there's so much negativity around the 22 winning the championship. I agree that he did not have the best overall season compared to other drivers. For instance, the 11, 5, 20 or 9. So clearly if the 22 made it to the final four just by luck alone, then explain to me how he beat everybody else on the track today? You don't have to win the race to win the championship, you just have to beat your other three competitors. So besides his team mate that gave him the closest competition, are we suggesting that all the other competitors just pulled aside and gave up on the last race? Of course not. The 20 was the favorite coming into this race, the 22 clearly out performed him today. And how many times in the last two weeks that we had to hear at nausea just how incredible the 45 was on the last lap at Vegas? Where was he at today? It was very evident that the 22 came to win the race and win the championship. Many of you are gonna think that I'm a diehard 22 fan. Honestly, I was pulling for the 24. But even as a Chevrolet fan, I have to tip my hat to our three time champion. I'm not saying that our system is perfect of how we currently crown a champion. But I don't think there's anything controversial about Joey winning the championship today.
Though there is negativity surrounding the NO. 22 winning the championship, I also think it is incredibly impressive to win 3 championships in this format. I agree with you 100%.
Coming in to nascar just has the luck watching the Daytona 500 and now becoming a fan. Buying die cast cars and shirts. Hope another great year next season. Sadly news Stewart Haas racing shutdown and Mark Martin retiring. Wanted Tyler to win. Shocking Joey becoming a 3 time champion
Martin Truex, Jr. also had quite a career.
The final ATYL race recap of the year. Awesome episode all year long. I can’t wait for them to return in 2025.
❤
Anthony laughing while Jeb has his finger in his face has me ON THE FLOOR
I feel bad that you had to witness that garbage in person. Easily the angriest I had ever been over a race in a very long time. There is one bright side from my POV though: One of my work besties found my rage on Instagram funny to the point where her mom couldn’t figure out what she was laughing at so she explained that her friend from work aka me was so mad 😂😂😂 And she’s damn right I was as I came upstairs after the race and went on a rampage to my family telling them what happened. Wonder what kind of shitshow we’re gonna get this weekend at Phoenix as the perfect ending to what has been an exciting season but for all the wrong reasons unfortunately
The straw pretty much flattens the camel into the sand below the soil. How some piece of garbage with an average finish barely above some Spire Motorsports jerkoff (Logano) is more eligible than the likes of Bell, Larson, and Chase shows how mindblowingly fraudulent this farce of a format truly is…..
Nah. The breaking point was in 2020 with Kevin. This is a addition to that
The playoff is not a good fit for racing. Every race is different. They all need something to race for. Just have a four car heat race. Lol. Not at the top tier
The system sucks
Racing is planned out
Byron did nothing wrong. You can't take Byron out for them doing that
Right call. Change the rule now but the rule is how it is you cant change it
I know you have thought about this more since the video, so your view might be different, but NASCAR 100 percent got the Bell wall-ride call correct. No one can convince me otherwise. It was only a fraction of the wall ride Ross did and it started because Bell sent the car in hard to gain position as a desperation move. He may not have that in mind, but he did use the wall that way when he gassed it up. To me, there was no serious attempt to get off the wall. The reason they had to call it is because NASCAR can't set the precedent of allowing a fraction of the move to be okay. Guys are going to overdrive the last corner and then use the wall to maintain a higher speed than would otherwise be possible. Then other drivers will have to defend it by also doing it which will be a mess. I also think what Byron said about what NASCAR and the drivers had discussed about the rule was the truth, and that it was black and white On a slightly positive note, there's a clip of Christopher Bell going over to William Byron and congratulating him. They seem to genuinely get along well too. I love seeing that kind of sportsmanship and poise from Bell. Byron and Bell seem similar in a lot of ways too in their seemingly calm(relatively) approach to racing and staying away from needless drama. They're basically the same size as well. They're in similar places within the sport and within their teams. Kudos to Blaney for doing it again to get to the championship race. The dynamic is interesting this year because Logano is also in. That could create some awkward moments. I have nothing constructive to add to the discussion of the points system other than agreeing it's messy. But I just wanted to say, as we approach the final race weekend that following your race coverage and analysis since the spring has made 2024 even more enjoyable as a race fan, so thank you for that. It's not always easy to find a good place to talk racing, but this is a place I like.
