This video covers the disassembly of the horn/airbag portion of the steering wheel on my 2008 base FJ Cruiser. This was done to add audio controls to the steering wheel. You can see the trimming/cutting video as well as the reassembly video in the links below. I added audio controls to my 2008 FJ Cruiser. This video shows the process of cutting the steering wheel to allow for the added controls. thanks for your videos, i put my controls in, but unfortunally I guess mine werent wired for radio functions, 2007 FJ
Thanks man. Great vid.
Just Save up the money for a few months and buy the entire wheel. This is way too much work for so little reward
If you don't have a physical volume button on your head unit this is definitely worth it. But if you're not good mechanically you could always spend more money.
How much lift and tire size?
3 inch lift. Body mount chop. SPC upper control arms. Vision Nemesis 111 Gunmetal - 17X9 wheels. 295/70r17 Cooper STT Pro's.
Can you please post a link where you got the template from? I plan to install an audio and telephone control buttons to my 08 fjcruiser. Thanks!
The template is posted in the video description. You can flip it over to do the other side. Good luck! It's a great mod.

@@kylegreen9421 thanks a lot!! Great help
What's the tool you used to cut the plastic off?
I used a hand held hacksaw. Check the description for the other 2 videos.
tried on a fj 2010 base model, aftermarket kenwood radio, not working, no lit up on the control........am i missing something here?
Were all the connections the same on wiring harness at the steering wheel? Was the Kenwood installed with a harness that plugs into the factory harness or was it cut and spliced in?
thank you for the half way removal ... lol
Check description for links to the other 2 videos.
Thanks for the videos and the forum guide bro! Add me to the list of Base Models that got this mod. I did both controls and yes if you flip the template over it works for the right side too. Apply the templates a little off the edge to give yourself more room for error, you can always trim more material but you can't add it back. I used a hack saw for the initial straight cut and then most of the trim work was done with a razor knife, the material is basically rubber so a razor cuts it quite easily, then final fitting was sanded using 180 grit sand paper, and I rolled the edges over and rounded them off so it looks more stock, tomorrow I will be masking the horn off and repainting the 3 silver trims so they match and look new again. This mod is a game changer for a base model FJ that has a touchscreen head unit... Must have!
You have a video for the disassembly?
th-cam.com/video/RMJ5z3w_IRc/w-d-xo.html
Safe to say the template works for both sides? Flipped, of course.
I only used it on the left side. I would cut it out and see how it fits over the left control and then flip and see if it fits over the right control the same.
Who did you order the switch from
I ordered from a Toyota dealer in my area. You can also look at Toyota dealers online. Many of them will ship it to you for less then your local dealer. There is a link in the description to my post on the FJ Cruiser forums with part numbers you can use to search. You should be able to find the left control for around $100.
Can steering wheel controls be added to FJ's without steering wheel controls at all?
Yes. My 08 is a base model and had no controls but the wiring was there. Some later years removed the wiring but the early ones definitely had it. See the description for my other 2 videos and check for the plugs before you order the parts.
@@kylegreen9421 very cool, thank you for the reply. Subbed!
Nice.. but can you show us how did you assembled and wired the steering wheel controls ?
th-cam.com/video/Ieu6gKWmdIA/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/RMJ5z3w_IRc/w-d-xo.html
can we remove it with out removing battery terminals?
You are removing the airbag. I would not risk it deploying in your face. Take an extra minute or two and disconnect the battery.
Did you disconnect the battery terminals again before plugging the air bag wires back in? I’m concerned they can accidentally set off for some reason lol
Yes. I was also concerned about accidental deployment.
Hey man great video and mod. I have a question, what kind of a screw is need it to hold the radio control? And where did you get it? Thanks a lot
It snaps into place. Check out the description for links to my other videos showing the install.
Did you have to cut the center airbag cover to fit the radio control?
Got it, thanks a lot man... great job 👍
I hope it helped.
hi bro on my steering wheel dont have any controller option if i want to upgrade and order the controller audio and the phone controller will be possible to install without changing hole steering wheel or no need ?
Check this out. www.fjcruiserforums.com/threads/add-steering-wheel-audio-controls-to-base-models.743832/#post-9349368 If you have questions after that let me know. I did not install the phone side as my head unit handles that on the touch screen.
Where did you get the template?
It's from the FJ Cruiser forums and can be found in the description above. Best to leave it a little long and sand it shorter as needed for proper fit. Here is the write up... www.fjcruiserforums.com/threads/add-steering-wheel-audio-controls-to-base-models.743832/#post-9349368
Thank you this helped so much

Hi Kyle, is the same installation process in a 2018 FJ cruiser? I would like to add the media and phone controls.
Sorry, I wish I knew about the 2018. From what I have read on the forums much of the extra wiring for optional components was removed in the later models. Best way to tell would be to remove the airbag unit and see if the wiring harness is there.
Mans! You could not be any clearer on the instructions..top of the toppest level man. Can't wait to see what else you have done to the FJ. Thanks for posting.
Hello! Thanks for the upload. Have you ever considered using smzeus . c o m to increase your subs?
Kyle, like all the extra options you could buy on a early fj cruiser, I assume that all this is pre-wired? Are these OEM parts or aftermarket? Can you also tell me the part numbers. Thanks a lot from a proud fj owner from Holland....
Yes, it's all pre-wired in the early models. The parts are OEM. www.fjcruiserforums.com/threads/add-steering-wheel-audio-controls-to-base-models.743832/#post-9349368
You need gas lol just sayin
No doubt.
