World-Class Operations, Forward-Thinking Strategy: Lessons in Public Health Leadership
In this discussion, Dr. CJ Kunnappilly, CEO of San Mateo County Health, emphasizes the critical importance of leadership clarity and strategic focus in public health. He reflects on his journey from a physician prioritizing patient care to a CEO recognizing the need to delegate operational tasks and fully embrace his role as a strategic leader. Kunnappilly highlights the balance required at all organizational levels, where operational excellence supports, but does not overshadow, the broader goal of developing forward-thinking strategies. Dr. Kunnappilly highlights the need for a long-term vision and the integration of strategy with daily operations to achieve meaningful improvements in patient care and organizational efficiency. He also discusses the shift from being a provider of last resort to focusing on equity and addressing societal barriers like food insecurity and language access.

Really enjoyed this conversation because it speaks to my values of a serious and deeper commitment to processes and getting work done, without being wasteful or disrespectful. Ken's facilitation and transitions were great (and feels like a no surprise now after reading his linkedin profile...). I really enjoyed Katie's lessons and examples from Japanese culture and how they look at work with such deep commitment and reverence for the process. I liked Gerald's bringing up very practical concerns and how to address them. Great guests and host. Thanks for sharing! I took away a lot.
Moral Injury is not a psychological problem. It is a Spiritual/Religious problem To treat otherwise is a waste of time. Mainstream Therapy is useless until the Vet is re-connected with God/Higher Power. This is what puts a stop on the suicides. The process is a simple one and takes less then an hour. After which other therapies can be involved. P.S. for thos of Faith they should be referred to their Priest, minister or rabbi.

Thank you for this!
I read with empathy your article How the conversation about moral injury in health care is changing. I wanted to let you know how it resonates with me and my colleagues. I left the US healthcare system after I had a similar demoralizing experience. Fortunately I was able to find refuge in a more ethical and people centered healthcare system in New Zealand. This article should leave everyone fully galvanized about seeking change in our morally bankrupt healthcare system.
Healthcare is very close to an oxymoron. Monetary gain is far too frequently the primary focus for clinicians and the patient IS injured physically, emotionally and financially. Patients are no longer first. What I've witnessed is far too many doctors can look you in the face and lie with abandon. They are not the pillars of society they believe they are. Buyer beware. For dentists in solo practice the oversight is nearly nonexistent. When a dentist is self governed and arrogant, this is a Very Lethal combo to expect to obtain healthcare from. It just is not going to happen. As I write this I can name several dentists in Maryland who continue to overtreat and abuse patients. Trust is not a given, it needs to be earned.

These questions are brilliant and meaningful... leading to the POTENTIAL for greatness in an organization. Everybody should be able to say "yes."
No one takes the CDC seriously they are the same people that said pregnant men could take the Covid injection. They are obviously a bunch of nut jobs and have nothing to do with the United States.
I also came here because I read The Power of Habits. This man is remarkable!
me to!!😂
Honored to bring the wisdom and work of Leapfrog's Missy Danforth and Prisma Health's Mike Bundy forward. Safety as a precondition and the spearpoint for a journey to habitual excellence. The Leapfrog Group has been the prime driver of transparency about harm and pressure for better across American healthcare. Mike Bundy has always shown what is possible when you lead with these ideas. I think you will be both inspired and find a powerful and practical leadership "map" for better here.
The video was actually insightful! I have been trying to look for a TH-cam video that really educates everything in this video! 👌 🙌Your explanation totally is similar to the vids of Dr. Ethan. Doctor Ethan's demonstrations are helpful and he really helped me a lot on exams. He is an educational medical student on TH-cam and he teaches conditions and conditions. You should see his YT out and give the health enthusiast a like! ➡️ #DrEthanHealth
Very nicely done, Team Value Capture. Indeed, it all starts with worker safety. If leaders work to protect the workers, they, in turn, will work to keep patients safe. It´s a beautiful formula but so poorly understood by members of the C-suites of the world's healthcare institutions. Admittedly, the pandemic has heightened awareness of this calculus, but precious few health organizations have put effective systems in place to keep their people from being hurt by, what my former University President, Jeffrey Holland, called "a virus 1,000 times smaller than a grain of sand" which has brought the collective world "to its knees." When this is all over I predict over 10,000 healthcare workers will have died from Covid-19. At the other end of the pandemic, Holland challenged us to be as "committed to freeing the world from the virus of hunger and freeing neighborhoods and nations from the virus of poverty" as we were to ending the pandemic. I add, may we be equally committed to putting in place systems to keep the world's healthcare workers safe from all types of harm they may experience on the job. To my knowledge, only Value Capture offers practical tools to make this happen on a global scale.
Thanks, Cliff! Your episode will be released this next week!
