How fast is my 90s mtb?

Well its fast, but not that fast... so let's find out why? I ride around East London to figure out this question, so make yourself a brew and enjoy!
UK Bridleway bike from a 90s MTB - just installed a dropper post and frame bag
มุมมอง 2.6K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
Here I rebuild my 90s MTB commuter bike into a UK gravel or bridleway bike. I really only install a dropper post and frame bag, but that is all I need for a lot of the rides I do around London. The inspiration for the bike, was the question whether a dropper post or a front fork is a better upgrade for a MTB, in my opinion its the dropper post. I don't plan on bringing the bike on any trail cen...
Diamondback Cheap Bike Build Off - London Edition - Final Part
มุมมอง 1.8K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is the second and final part of the build. This is a Diamondback Ascent EX from 1989. In this part we do the cabling, final touches and take it on a bike ride to see some planes! With a nice slow motion video for fun too! See 6:02 mark for the final bike shots. So total build cost was £167 to get it full working order. Yes that's over budget, but I didn't have access to cheap second stuff,...
Diamondback Cheap Bike Build off - London Edition
มุมมอง 5K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is my take on the cheap bike challenge, or cheap bike build off. For as little as possible I see how to get a cheap bike in London for commuting college or just a sunny Sunday ride :) The bike is an 1989 Diamondback Ascent Ex with Shimano Mountain LX Groupset. In this part we take a detailed look at the condition and what it took to strip down the bike, clean and start the re assembly proc...
Living in the future.. :-) Nice...
🤦♂️ did I say I'm an enjinear?
August 2025 typo in intro
🤷 thanks for spotting it, not sure TH-cam will let me edit it though. I'll be careful next time 🤦♂️
Nice 😊
Good video! I’ve got the Feedback brand of that style bike stand. I rarely use it at home due to it's limitations but it's lighter and folds up smaller that the regular style Park stands I have so it's the one I travel with.
Yeah, I think that's what they are designed for 👌 But since I mostly work on MTBs, it's not the best choice for me. I've just gotten another one though!
I’m going to need to know where in the UK you’re selling these bikes because I can’t sell anything in the midlands. Damn.
Central London mate! The market for bikes is hit and miss (lots of scams and stolen bikes) so a good listing in the summer is a hit.
Also thinking about this, I've seen Orange P7s in mint condition go for £75, pick up only, on ebay in some places. They start at £250 for clapped versions in London.
@ yeah exactly that 😂 the difference is insane. I’ve had my 91 Diamdback Apex. Beautiful original condition. Up for sale since last August at least. £250. No bites at all but plenty of watchers.
feeling for you, cutting that steerer tube with a mini hacksaw.
Lol 😆 I only cut a steerer every few years, so no need to invest in a special cutter or anything. 🤷
@@FreewheelBuilds just a full size hacksaw, nothing special about it. inexpensive also.
Maybe i missed it, but what handlebar are those?
👋 thanks for watching. They are HIGH BIKE RIDING POSITION EXTRA WIDE, EXTRA RISE, EXTRA COMFORT, DUTCH HANDLEBAR from Bankrupt Bike Parts on Ebay. They are 670mm wide and 100mm rise. I find that a big improvement on the normal 600 straight bars.
Beautiful bike, what handlebars are those? I need some extra rise for my lanky arse!
Thanks 😊 they are "670mm Chrome Hise Riser Tourist Bike Handlebars North Road Style 100mm Rise" or item 203973495499 on eBay.
sweet build, I like that front rack and am currently in the market of purchasing one. What front rack is used on this build? Thanks!
Thanks! It's a Brick Lane Bikes Frontier. They are heavy duty so it does add weight. But it's survived crashes and loads of abuse for me.
I got half way through this video before I noticed it was a DB Ascent (Even though I heard you say it). I have a Full Suspension Ascent 1.0 I acquired earlier this year..
The steel one? If so, that loos awesome 👌. I woukd love to try one, but I'm heavy built so need air shocks otherwise I use up all the suspension just sitting on a bike.

Hi, Very nice preparation!! Well done. What brand and dimensions of tyres do you use? Have a nice trip.
Hi, they're schwalbe Big Ben plus 2.1s. They have the green guard, only punctured once when a machine screw chewed up a section But they're now cracking so need new ones. Might get regular big Ben's next.
Looks perfect. I had a Raleigh sojurn stolen. It was a buity. Abit heavy but sturdy and dependable. Good job .
Hate to heat about stolen bikes 😐
Really nice build! I had a quite similar bag setup on my trip to trondheim - right inbetween bike packing and touring!
Yeah, I'm not fussy on what category it's in, just want to ride my bike comfortably!
What's that rear fender? Pretty neat that it mounts on the canti posts - is that off the shelf or custom? Edit: I think it's a Topeak NMF from the old school 👍
Yes, it's a topeak, but no idea after that! Yeah I thought it was cool, I was a bit sad to replace it, but I need as much coverage as possible for the trip!
Congratulations, beautiful build🚴
Glad you like it!
Wrong time for mayo weather catch you out take care 🍀🙈
Well, this was shot in August, but caught the unseasonal weather, including hurricane Ernesto 🌀
Two things I would upgrade, the front wheel is radial laced, that is not the best for travels as it's not as strong as 3 cross lacing, brakes are easily upgraded to v-brakes The modulation and power of your brakes is not as good as you liked, you mentioned, this is because you have brake levers that are made for V-brakes combined with canti brakes. If you switch the cantilever brakes for V models then braking is much better. If you ever want to replace the cables that run over the top tube then install outre cables from front to back in one piece, the cables stay much smoother in performance and is also not conflicting with your toptubebag
Yeah, good shout out, i was thinking that, too. Due to time, i was keen to get it done quickly and cheaply, hence using levers i had. Plan is to strip the bike fully next year, spray paint, and get all those details sorted out.
Lovely build. Hope you have a fantastic time on the trip.
Thanks, already been and back, you'll hear all about it in a video soon 👍
nice buildd the problem at 90s mtb the frame and the stem is too damn long for shorter rider. I have to use sweptback handlebar where do you poo then
It wasnt til the afternoon, in Wales at the ferry port at Hollyhead. 😂
Great build..steel 90’s Univegas are great bikes! I have done a virtually exact same build on ‘95 Marin Eldridge grade, with 2.1 big apples - so comfy!
I think these peaked in mid 90s, then went to aggressive with front squish!
With lively debate on bike luggage, it's interesting to see so many wire baskets used. Enjoyed video, showed how good, group getaways can be.
Thanks 🙏 Yeah, I've started using one lately, and it's a quick and cheap way of carrying stuff (mine was £4 or $6usd!) . But I would much prefer a bag, which is waterproof, and keeps small stuff from falling out. But specific front rack bags are £100+/$150usd.
Small world 😂 Seabass built my bikepacking hardtail mtb last year. Really happy with it! Surrey hills is always a good ride, looks like a lot of fun in a group ride
Yeah, book it in for next year, we'll worth the trip for it
How the heck do I get involved in this?
Seabass cycles is pretty active on Instagram. Also follow 2ndlifebikes and Babyldn. They post group rides and bike jumbles alot. One is coming on 31st August for @Babyldn, another on 15th September for @2ndlifebikes.
A good water test on the frame bag too😉
😆
Thanks for posting this. I saw about this ride and it is local to me, but I thought it would be more race like. It looks very friendly and laid back. Maybe next year.
There were two rides, I think the longer ride was more racey, but outs was very party pace, we waited for everyone every few km. Definitely worth it 👌
Nice one, sad I missed it but I will hopefully be on the next one :)
Book it for sure, or even head to the Campsite itself, it's awesome, and next door to the trails!
Sweet univega
Thanks, no one has barely heard of them in the UK, so they are cheap. But made in Taiwan so quality is excellent!
Loved the pace and style of video 👏🏻
Happy to hear that! 🤌
Xtreeeeeme!!!
World first coming soon!
On my local trail my old full rigid Raleigh is about 10 minutes slower than my Sworks Epic. 42' vs. 32'.
That's interesting 🤔 I bet an s-works epic would be faster than any of my bikes... what is the weight difference? On longer rides, I think a bit of suspension for comfort would be faster.
Really like the frame's paint/colors.
The main reason I bought the bike!
whats with mtb community these days? they suddenly pops up into my feed, everywhere. Well, i got an mtb too but theres no tracks nearby :/
Thanks... i think.... but It's worth trying to find trails. All the local ones take longer to get there than I can actually ride. But you will make friends too!
5:19 haha that multi spanner was my mums first bike related tool. thought it looked cool but my dad said unfortunately it was made of 'cheese' (some zinc alloy) and was totally rounded. enjoyed this build
Thanks 😊 and yes they are usually Swiss cheese but couldn't find my regular 10mm!
Not sure why you ysed insulation tape around the rear rack bolts, a bit of grease on the threads will stop any water ingress.
🤷 you can never be too careful. I'm expecting a lot of mud, and grease can be washed out.
Very nice. Interesting about the bridalways.
Lol wish I could claim credit for it! But gravel bikes sound much cooler.
Cest butifle! How much does it weight?
Not light, maybe 12kg mark. But I usually don't really care too much about weight, more concerned the bike doesn't break beneath me.
@@FreewheelBuilds 12kg for a 90s restomod is not much
What a sexual frame
🤦🏻
Nice build and looks comfortable. Like the polished cranks and look forward to the comparison.
Yep, in a few weeks, cause my bike Computer isn't working 🫠
Fire
👍
A bridleway bike is a much better description for a UK gravel bike...
Lol I got the idea from a @tracevelo video, where he put 2.1 mtb tyres on a gravel bike.
Can't begrudge the final price. Some of the figures other TH-camrs were coming up with aren't realistic. Unless, you have a big shed with years worth of accumulated gear. Depends where you live, what price and availability 2nd hand stuff is as well.
I've noticed some count cabling and some don't. TBF I have another bike that cost £75, but it only needed a new handlebar and cabling, so about £100 total.
Digging the frame of choice. The DB is a great bike. I rescued one and been thinking how i want to build it. Digging it.
Thanks man! 👍i think its to avoid drop bars, and swept riser bars are the way to go. It doesn't affect handling that much, but massively improves comfort.
A little of polish compound maybe could remove the yellow effect in thte white paint. Nice job tho.
Thanks 👍 I did use some fine steel wool and some polish in the other video. I didn't want to go through the clear coat, so only a light sanding. I think if the next owner was serious about the bike, then it would be worth a new spray.bike. the paint is in really bad condition.
Skip here to 6:02 for the final shots!
the parts looked good and still useable. there are tutorials out there for fixing and relubing thumb shifters. a full disassembly, clean, and lube.
Yeah, I guess I got as far as seeing it broken 🙃 maybe should have researched it more!
Nice build. I’d describe fitting the canti’s in exactly the same way - fiddly! 👌
Lol but I can't deal with bad feeling brakes!
I love that you havent jumped on the band wagon and fitted tan wall tyres.thats a great looking bike.
Lol I feel the same, not a real fan of tan walls! But maybe some marbling effect one's like the grips?
Rad build!
Thanks 😊
Great bikes!👊
Glad you like them!
I have the same ride! Your build turned out beautiful.
Awesome! Thank you!
