Improvisation in C minor
That Which is Heard is a duo-improvisation collaboration between Eliot Grasso (flutes, whistles, shruti box) and Brandon Vance (violin, voice, shruti box). The collaboration title comes from a transliteration of shruti, a Sanskrit word that means "that which is heard" and which alludes to both the musical and the spiritual.
"What we've found in improvising together with the shruti box is that some our favorite musical ideas emerge and combine to give rise to something wholly new. Once we set the box to a particular drone setting, we never know exactly what will happen. What we can say, however, is that these improvisations are deeply cathartic and have yielded some music that we are really excited about. We sincerely hope that you will enjoy listening to our music as much as we enjoyed improvising it." - Eliot & Brandon
We are currently taking bookings for house concerts, festivals, chamber music series, theaters, museums, dramatic productions, and larger concert venues.

Behind the Scenes of That Which is Heard

Duo-performing is an art, as any chamber musician or band player will tell you. It takes a great deal of time to learn how to read the other musician(s) in the ensemble where they're going musically, when they're prepping to change it up, when to switch tunes, whether one of you should jump on a harmony part, and a host of other things. Duo-improvisation, however, requires a completely differen...

Reel: The Yellow Tinker
มุมมอง 1465 หลายเดือนก่อน
I first heard this tune played by Baltimore accordion player Billy McComiskey, which he recorded with The Irish Tradition Brendan [Mulvihill (fiddle) and Andy O'Brien (guitar, vocals)] on "The Times We've Had" for Green Linnet in 1985. This reel was a favorite of my dad's and he would either request it or express his enthusiasm when Billy would play it. It's normally in the key of G mixolydian,...
Jig: Whelan's

I learned Whelan's Jig from the playing of flute player Frank Claudy. It's a subtle and beautiful tune, grounded with many E rolls. Breandán Breathnach (1912-1985) published "Whelan's Jig" in his (Ceol Rince na h'Éireann The Dance Music of Ireland, Vol. I), 1963; No. 49, p. 20. Breathnach says that the the 'Whelan' in the title is Tommy Whelan, an east Galway flute player with the old Ballinaki...

It is said that this reel was composed in honor of the World Eucharistic Congress in Dublin, in 1932, or was popular around that time and the name became attached. Gerdie Commane, a concertina player from the Kilnamona area, has said that it was written by accordion player Joe Mills to commemorate the Dublin Congress. A version of "The Congress Reel" was published by Breandán Breathnach (1912-1...
Jig: Lark in the Morning
มุมมอง 2915 หลายเดือนก่อน
This four-part jig is a classic Irish traditional jig and session tune. I learned it as a child playing sessions with my dad at J. Patrick's Pub in Baltimore. Dublin uileann piper, collector, and researcher Séamus Ennis (1919-1982) claimed that "Lark in the Morning" was derived from a similar five-part jig called "The Lark's March." You can hear Ennis play "The Lark's March" on his recording "F...
