    I'm a North Carolinian wanting to move to Minnesota. How are the mosquitos compared to the South?

    • @LivingMinneapolisSuburbs
      @LivingMinneapolisSuburbs 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      In my opinion the mosquitos can be pretty bad at times, it depends on the time of the year and where you live, the closer you are to any water or wetlands the worse they will be. They generally only come out during the sunset hour and stay out a little after an then it becomes too cold for them to stay out.

    I was born in MN but raised in Michigan. Three grandparents spoke Scandinavian languages in childhood. What I think first about MN is the lack of comfort with racial diversity. My family that stayed in MN are in tiny towns and very uncomfortable with black folks. I grew up in a university town in Michigan and my inner friend group is about twice the local percentage of black folks. All the international students and academics in town help me understand humanity. I haven’t spent winters in Minnesota. I remember one August I was visiting relatives, back when not everybody had air-conditioning (60’s -70’s) and it was SOOO HOT. We just stayed standing up because sitting down would be too hot. There’s so many lakes, It was really humid.

    It's been a somewhat okay experience living in Minneapolis/Brooklyn Park area. Unfortunately, I what I have experienced as a Hispanic American person is discrimination from black Americans individuals. Additionally, I have spoken with some of the the Latinos that I have encountered and they too have experienced discrimination from the black people. That breaks my heart that we Latinos have to experienced this Behavioral!!

    The biggest complaint I hear from transplants about the MN Nice thing is that they find it really difficult to find a close friend group. We are nice enough to stop by and greet you, shovel your sidewalk, ask how you're doing, but when it comes to breaking into a group, people are very cliquish and it's not uncommon to see people have the same tight knit friend group their entire lives. The key to breaking this is just to get involved in public activities you enjoy, seek out other transplants, or build friendships through work. I have met a lot of friendly people just joining on on group bike rides, events at concerts, taprooms, festivals, hobby shops, sporting events etc. and it gives you a common excuse to hang out outside of a public setting.

    I just moved to Vadnais Heights, Mn. (Twin cities suburb) from, Portland, Or. and these videos are great. I gotta agree on the mosquitos, though. I moved there late July and the mosquitos have been the biggest surprise so far. I’ve lived in all 3 west coast states (Or, Ca, Wa) as well as Arizona and Nevada and, in all 5 of those states, I could comfortably sit outside in shorts on a warm night. I figured out quickly that’s not possible here unless you love getting eaten by mosquitos. I fell asleep one night on porch and woke up to dozens of bites. Other than that, I’m super happy with how green it is, how drivers drive fast and aggressive, and especially happy with all the picturesque outdoor locations to visit. For the record, we loved Oregon but left because we simply could not deal with housing costs. We bought a nice 2000 sqft home in beautiful location for 400k and the same house in Portland area in a similar neighborhood would have been near double. I’m reserving my final opinion of Minnesota until after I survive a winter, though. 😂

    I just came back from Minneapolis last night. I went there with my husband on a work trip so while he was working I went thrifting. I will say this you’re right the people there are very nice and friendly very helpful. If you asked somebody a question they were very quick to help. I was very impressed, You do have a Minnesota !! Your thrift stores are absolutely outrageously priced the Goodwill stores prices, Walmart, target & Shein clothing marked at $8.99!!!! His job of course covered our hotel however he pays upfront and then they reimburse him. The hotel tax is 15.03%!! There is still a lot of urban blight from the riots! The traffic traffic is ridiculous and a lot of that is because instead of having the two lanes, they took away lane and made it into a stupid bike lane!!! I was watching a video people saying there are homeless encampments right in their backyard with people defecating toilet paper trash gunshots even murder right in their backyards and they said they have called the police met with city council and nothing is done but the police are in force I mean everywhere I went. I never failed to see several police cars trying to ticket citizens why in the world are they doing that? Why don’t they go clean up those homeless encampment and put a stop to this BS where private property is being infringe and destroying peoples lives and safety!!! of course that’s because Governor Tim Walz and your mayor are huge liberals who think it’s all fine as long as it doesn’t affect them!!

The economy because of the hurting. The crime is now out of control. He is comparing it to Chicago. I will not go to the metro with out my personal perfection. He talks about the metro with a central Minnesota phone number. Don’t trust this TH-cam person.

  • @Liberty-rn4wy

    I have lived in Minneapolis for ten years. The pros: walking (very walkable city), lakes, the river, arts, festivals, sports, nice people (if somewhat aloof and a bit cold at times), the summers are decent. The cons: brutal winters, the public schools suck, crime is rising, taxes and fees are high and rising as policing declines. Minneapolis in terms of demographics is a white collar Fortune 500 city but the south side is very left-wing politically. The north side is crime-ridden. Some areas are on an upside: North Loop is very nice, and the east downtown area around the Vikings stadium is better than when I moved here (much more to do). Some areas are in steep decline - Uptown, Lake Street. Car theft, breakins, carjackings, and shootings are an issue. Half the restaurants and bars in downtown are now gone. You can't find a clothing store in downtown of any side and there are no Apple stores in the entire city(!).

    You need to let people know that winter is COMPLETELY random. While a Halloween blizzard isn't unheard of, last year I didn't bring my shovel out until past New Years and didn't actually need it until February. Also, while I grew up as a suburbanite from Bloomington who bought his first house in Minneapolis only because he couldn't afford not to, the fact that I could ride my bike 25 miles passing 7 different lakes the Mississippi and a creek while only riding off a bike trail for 5 of those miles was a huge perk. I'll never like the politics of city life, but free concerts in summer at Lake Harriet's bandshell, all the art fairs and farmers markets and Minnehaha Falls all within 10 miles of home creates a great standard of living during the warm months. To highlight what you said about appreciating summer more, Minnesota is 2nd only to California in convertible cars per capita and leads the country in money spent on gardening.

    I watch these videos about Minnesota quite often over the last few years , but one thing nobody talks about , especially local Government is the crime . The crime , for years was mostly in certain areas , but now it is everywhere , even places like Edina . I used to like The Cedar Riverside area in the summer but now you can't pay me to go there . Property Tax is to the moon in Minneapolis and St.Paul and the infrastructure is not what you would expect when paying that much taxes . If people are thinking of moving here they should know much more than these videos talk about . As for the people , well it was known as Minnesota nice for many years but you really have to experience it for yourself and not just in the better areas . Always be aware of what is going on around you . On the good side there are some great food establishments , lots of parks and lakes .

    Interesting. I have lived in the Twin Cities for about 15 years now. (1) winters are long, harsh and dark. There is about 5 months of the year where there is not much sunlight this far north, get used to going to and from work in the dark all winter, you really get used to just doing everything in the dark for months. (2) Mosquitos are vicious here. If you go outside in the evening be prepared for attack. It's not just at night, if you go walking into a wooded shady area in the daytime they'll get you then too. (3) I've lived here 15 years, the only friends I have are people I have met at work, and for the most part the relationships are restricted to work. Maybe part of that is my fault, I don't drink and am not interested in sports at all so all the times coworkers have asked if I want to stop by the bar and watch the game or whatever they've probably given up on trying to socialize with me outside of work. (4) I have lived in suburbs the entire time I have been here, Bloomington, Edina, I have lived in Prior Lake for the past 8 years and it is a pretty decent, a safe community with huge parks, lakes and excellent trails for biking which is one of my favorite things to do. It's also far enough out that there isn't a lot of congestion on the roads, it's a more peaceful existence here compared to living in Edina or Bloomington which are much more urbanized. (5) Humidity here gets pretty bad in the summer, I've never been to Florida so I don't know what it's like there but we get miserably hot humid weather here. (6) I am from Wisconsin and it is also a great place to live, beautiful state with many of the same great attributes that Minnesota has. If I was not tied down to my life here I would move back there just to be closer to my parents.
