Mark Segal: Stonewall Lasted 365 Days
Mark Segal moved to New York City in May of 1969 and a month later found himself at The Stonewall Inn as the now-infamous police raid began.
"The police came in, pretended that they were doing their duty, got their pay off," he says. "The difference here was they barged in, they threw people up against the wall, they extorted money from some of the older people, they harassed the drag queens. It was pretty violent."
Stonewall sparked Mark Segal's lifelong commitment to activism, which memorably included interrupting Walter Cronkite in the middle of CBS Evening News by yelling and waving a banner that read, "Gays Protest CBS Prejudice".
He joins us on the podcast to look back on the last 50 years of the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement and shares the secret ingredient that underlies all of his activism: a sense of humor.

Seattle born 74 years ago. Glad to hear this young woman speak candidly & gently about her challenges. Too bad she never heard of Olivia Records, Meg Christian, Holly Near, & so many more who made fabulous women's music in late 70's & into the 90's & even later. So strange that the road has to be re-made again & again with new generations. Times are obviously far more polarized now with gender weaponized in this strange way. More power to the Young who are trailblazing their own path with peace, love, transcendence.

Your first statement is already problematic. Observe: Pretend a woman says this: The problem with homosexuality is like, I'm a single straight woman and statistics show that there are more women than men in the US. If men date other men, then who's left for people like me? I'd have to ask that woman if she REALLY wanted to date a gay man who she knows will never find her attractive and won't be happy in a relationship with her. Same with polyamory, do you really want to be with a polyamorous person who won't be happy being with only you because monogamy makes them miserable? I'm sorry that there's not enough straight men for every straight woman, but taking away gay rights or thinking that being gay is "bad" or "problematic" won't make a single straight woman happy either. It just makes gay men miserable. Same here, complaining about polyamory doesn't change a polyamorous person, and not allowing them freedom of marriage or protection from discrimination doesn't give you more people to choose from, it just makes polyamorous people miserable and unable to be themselves.

I think at least for some atheists, myself included, we don't hate nor discourage people of faith but many of us also feel that it is wrong to tolerate all the evils that organized religion has brought on the world. And most of us were at some point in our lives, believers, so we get it. I don't agree with setting out to specifically change people's mind on this.
