Fall garden tour
A walk around the front yard of our rental home, highlighted by palms, citrus, camellias, and many flowering plants. We have had mild temperatures and no frost so far, so everything looks wonderful.

Family taste-test of Sun Dragon citrus
มุมมอง 4816 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Sun Dragon is a recently-released citrus from Florida, notable there for its tolerance to HLB, or Citrus Greening, a fatal bacterial disease that has decimated the Florida citrus industry. For growers of cold-hardy citrus, Sun Dragon holds some promise of being cold-hardy, as it is 1/8 Trifoliate orange. Here, three of my children taste-test Sun Dragon.
Sun Dragon Preview!
มุมมอง 1614 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Here’s a first look at Sun Dragon, a complex hybrid that is 1/8 Trifoliate orange, part orange, part grapefruit, and part mandarin. It was developed for HLB resistance but shows some promise as a cold-hardy “sweet orange.”
Carolina Lime!
มุมมอง 964 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Taste-testing Carolina lime. Carolina lime was introduced by Stan McKenzie of South Carolina via Europe. Its origins are obscure but my intuition tells me that it is an F2 Clementine x Trifoliate cross, probably back-crossed with Clementine.
Clusters of Keraji!

It’s not uncommon for Keraji mandarin to make clusters of fruit, much like a miniature version of grapefruit.
Kumquat Hybrids Taste Test

I agree with your assessment of its parentage. I tried a clem x tri x clem from Virginia Fruit Grower and it was nearly the same with just more yellow outside rind color.
Incredible! Thank you.
Everything sure looks great my palms always look nice this time of year and then winter hits. My citrus are all in the greenhouse. Very nice job thanks for sharing it.
Oh my! I’m intrigued! I sure hope this one has some cold hardiness
Just reviewed this one today too! It was quite good and a very convincing, hardy lime substitute.
Wow, that's a large fruit. I'm a fan of pomelo flavor already, so this sounds like a winner!
Would be interesting to see it crossed with a citrandarin
I know researchers in FL are doing lots of work crossing it to other things in the hopes of getting an HLB-tolerant “orange.”
Amazing !!! I wish we could find this one in Europe!
It’s a winner. It’s also being used for some additional breeding (for HLB tolerance) for some amazing new releases.
About to Google it, thanks
Looking forward to the review!
How many years has your plant been in the ground?
Хороший обзор! 🍊🍊🍊
Thank you for the video. i try plant my Keraji next spring in zone 8a. I hope is cold hardy enough until -10/-11 C. I read your book 'Hardy Citrus for the southeast' and read about , that Keraji is excellent cold hardy varietie. Among others like Yuzu, thomasville , shiranui/dekopon , Harumi, and some satsuma type varieties. Do you could recommend for zone 8a some other citrus?
I’m growing some 60+ varieties. Those you name are all great - I would add Carolina lime, Changsha, Kishu, MIC, Ichang lemon, Yuzuquat, and other “quats.”
@@CitrusPalmsWithTom Thank you. I live in Europe bytheway. My microClimate is rapidly changing in the last 10-15 year . Befor my property was zone 7 with -15 Celsius minimum... now is zone 8a with around -10 C minimum ( in the last 7 year was -11 the lowest, but only 1-2 morning) Do you could recemmend a collector or nursery here in Europe from whom i could buy MIC or Kishu varieties or just a grafting scion/stock ?
@ this might be a good source of information: facebook.com/share/1DJbkQXyTZ/?
Yummy and beautiful
Excited to see hobbyists attempt more citrangequat crosses in the future!
It’s the apical meristem?
Beautiful tree. Curious how you used pine straw bales to protect.
These varieties are tempting for me to grow here in zone 7 b - east Tenn. Kishu probably best grown in a large pot here. Thanks for a most helpful video- keep em coming ,man!
Thanks Tom. I'm always learning something new from you. I love keraji, it's getting to be my favorite fruit. You're right about the vigor. I planted it in the ground this past April, it about quadrupled in size. My husband built me a structure to protect it this winter.
So nice of you
Thanks for the update and info! Are you growing any Satsuma?
Yes I am!
My Kishu grown in pot, zone 5b, is prolific producer and does well indoor - in low light conditions. As an indoor citrus plant, from a fruit production prospective, is only second to kumquat.
Kishu looks like a candidate for growing in a large pot here in eastern Tennessee Zone 7 b. If it tastes half as good as my Browns Select and ten degree tangerine it'll be worth it. Being a smaller tree than the other two will help out being in a large pot I hope.
Thank you Tom!
Welcome!
I need to taste the Giombo persimmon to see how I like it before I buy a tree. You need to sell me a couple.
Looking good brother!
And where are you located?
Wow pretty
This plant is a hybrid of M. ornata x M. velutina, I made the same cross in my experiments and they are now finishing. We will see if a new variety comes out ☺️
Beautiful ❤😊
Wonderful looking trees. Loving those high grafts too!
Wow! Tree is looking great 😊
Thank you! 😊
And this takes the astringency away ?
They are really nice.
Savannah Citrus has some nice trees down there
How’s their Thomasville doing? It’s apparently quite old!
It’s hanging in there, but showing its age.
Man your trees are looking good. I have high hopes for sun dragon 🐉 also. I got one fruit and can’t wait to try it. Thanks for sharing Tom!!!
I’m looking forward to getting it in the ground! I just wish I knew where!
@@CitrusPalmsWithTom lol, finding more space is always tricky!!! Never enough citrus!!🤣💪🍊
That Rangpur x Troyer seems like a promising hybrid! My Thomasville is still putting out flowers now.
In a greenhouse, Thomasville is essentially everblooming. It really should be THE ornamental citrus for homeowners.
Where would someone get Sun Dragon? Hehe
madisoncitrusnursery.com/products/us-sundragon-citrus-tree-for-sale
Those are very healthy specimens, they should do well when you plant them next year 🤞
Thanks! Winter can be a challenge, but fortunately I have access to a nice greenhouse.
Thanks♥️🍊🍋🌳
Nice!
I live in CA, Zone 9b. I just got a Kishu Mandarin tree. It seems rather slander. I hope it'll grow more leaves and branches soon. Any tips you can share? I'm growing it in a container.
At some point while watching, I got lost in my head over why no help ever came 😢😢😢 it was like we didn't exist and no one cared 😢😢
Looking great, Tom! Really a winner in my book!
Have you ever considered grafting some cuttings and selling a few of these?
I can’t legally propagate citrus in Georgia without proper nursery facilities, unfortunately. But I have passed it along to those who do. 😊
Yummy persimmon chips
That's an awesome idea Tom. I have a tree full of them, and was wondering what can I do with them. I'll definitely try dehydrating.
Good idea thanks for sharing
Good idea
They are one of my favourite flowering plants. It's very cool to see all those butterflies enjoying yours!
Same here!
How devastating! So many trees down, so many power lines. It'll take long time to recover.
