Biasing a '65 Fender Bassman
The electricians are still in and out of the wood shop so I can't work out there today! We have an old Fender Bassman, which is one of our favourite amps. We've been noticing lately that it hasn't been sounding as good as usual so, it's time to replace the tubes. I thought this would be a good opportunity to show you how I bias a tube amp. This one is a bit long but, there's a lot to cover.

    The bench looks great! Handy little vise a s well. I have a bigger shop, not bragging just setting this up. I put 4" boxes every six feet around the whole shop. A 4" box has four outlets. Now of course some are not convenient to access because, for instance, my grizzly 24" drum sander ended up right in front of one box. I have 4 outlets at both ends of my tech bench. That's eight outlets within arms reach. They are all full to the point that I have to change cords sometimes to accommodate the demand. So I said all this to say, you might want to have some power on the wall behind you. If not for the immediate need but for the unforeseen future. Maybe for battery charge selves on the tool wall.

      @JagStar 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the advice Dane. There is one on the “back” wall and it’s my plan to use it for the chargers. I might actually install a four there just to have some options. I also have lots of room in the panel so I can expand when needed. I’ve been working with a total of eight outlets, including the extension cord I use to bring in power from a plug outside. I’ll be at 10 without the extension cord when this is done so I’ll already be a bit ahead. And my table saw will be required to one of the 220s. 😊

    4:14 Actually, my interest is learning about valve amplifiers in general, as I have my great grandmother's Hammond M-100 to restore (lot of carbon comps have drifted off value and the 'lyitics need replacing), a couple of German consoles (back when worth nothing), and then build my own hifi amplifier. TH-cam recommended the capacitor outside foil video and found informative enough went hunting for more videos. One of the many things I am gaining by watching the videos is ideas for the hifi amplifier. For example, I was debating on EL84s or EL86s, now here is the solution in the Hiwatt design: switch the HT and include bias adjustment. Cheers, Adriel PS Not understanding the FX, looked on their website for more information, and not one iota, apparently no longer sold. They have even removed schematics for everything.

    • @JagStar
      @JagStar 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Adriel, welcome and thanks for watching! I haven’t seen the inside of a Hammond in a long time, that sounds like a great project! I love the sound of those old Hammonds. If you want it to have a lower noise floor, use metal film resistors for the plates. Use carbon comps in the signal path to keep the mojo. Definitely replace the electrolytics. That outside foil video is my most watched. Makes me wish I had done a better job! Maybe I’ll do a new version sometime. Don’t give up on Trinity Amps. Steven Cohrs, Mister Trinity Amps, retired at the end of 2022 but it was just announced yesterday that the company has been taken over by Craig Williams and he will be ramping it up again. Trinity will be re-releasing their kits, and the schematics, over the next while. I’m glad to see them back. Here’s a link to the announcement, facebook.com/search/top?q=trinity%20amps The schematics are still up on their site, just hard to find. Here’s a link to the Tube FX Loop Installation Guide, www.trinityamps.com/wp-docs/TubeFxLoopInstallation.pdf. It doesn’t have a proper schematic but there is a layout which gives you enough information to figure out what’s going on. Cheers back, Jag

    Thank, these explanations are very helpful, and well presented. I've worked on digital electronics for many years, and only in the last two or three have I been learning more about linear circuits, especially for audio. Your note about a failing capacitor letting DC in where it ought not to be is very helpful. I often find myself trying to figure out a problem with a circuit and I realize that I'm thinking of the components as either working or not working rather than somewhere in between, and this sort of reality check is very helpful to my thinking.

    • @JagStar
      @JagStar 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Captain. That's one of the things about analog electronics and discrete components, most of them can kind of work until they fail outright. Sometimes a failing component will even make the amp sound better, but the eventual failure can be catastrophic. As long as nothing takes out the iron, most failures are recoverable.

    Hi! I've been wondering why you need C3 in the circuit - if you leave it out, the DC cathode voltage of V1 will still be isolated in the circuit by C2, C4, C5 and C6. Or is there something I'm missing?

      I was afraid someone would ask about that part of the circuit! 😂 That feedback circuit was added at the suggestion of Kevin O'Connor from London Power. The circuit I'm building was drawn quite a few years ago and, except for the feedback circuit, is pretty straight forward. I'm not sure I have the workings of it clear in my mind anymore but, I think C3 is there to keep the circuit stable at low frequencies. If anybody has more input, please feel free to chime in.

      @@JagStar Looking at it again, I have doubts about the value of C2 - 47n seems a pretty low value considering the lew impedance of the cathode of V1. I'm afraid that low frequences wouldn't be affected by the feedback loop. If I'm allowed a suggestion, how about changing C2 to 22uF and leaving out C3 altogether?

      @@pafnoocy Thanks for the suggestion. I'll probably play around with it some, so will try your suggestions. Unless I'm looking at it wrong, that's a positive feedback loop and I've never really played around with that. I recall discussing this part of the circuit 15 years ago when it was suggested and it made sense to me then. To be honest, after that much time, I'm trying to get my head around it again.

      @@pafnoocy This build is based on a bass preamp kit I bought from London Power about 15 years ago but never built. That part of the circuit has had me scratching my head since I first got the original kit. That's partly why I chose to base the build on it, so I could learn what it does. I just sent an email to London Power with a scan of the original schematic (I'm building a modified version) to see if I can get Kevin's input. If I hear back, I'll probably do some discussion of it in an upcoming video. Thanks for challenging me! I really appreciate how this discussion has made me take a closer look at both positive and negative feedback circuits.

      Sorry it's a negative feedback loop, I had my head on backwards yesterday.

    Thanks! Is this capable of running on US voltage as well as 220 voltage as in UAE countries?

    • @JagStar
      @JagStar 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, it came with the connector heads for different countries. I’m in Canada so it’s always running 120. All you need to do is connect the head for the country you are in.

    should be V1A V1B, cause it's the same valve ;)

    The heater wiring is VERY critical to get right. Look at it like an antenna, broadcasting 60hz, inside the amp, and the pre-amp is the receiver. Twist them uniformly, and TIGHT, keep them exactly the same length, have them run AWAY from the grids at 90 degree angles. Keep that AC as FAR away from everything else as possible. You can't make the magnetic field go away, the goal is to make the fields on the two wires CANCEL EACH OTHER OUT! Don't forget a hum balance pot, to the chassis, or 2 100 ohm resistors as a virtual ground. No RANDOM grounding scheme! Don't run ANY current THRU the CHASSIS! One ground, in one place, right at the center tap secondary grounds and filter cap ground. Keep grid circuits AWAY from plate circuits. It's NOT about parallel pretty to the eye wiring. Don't make little "Air Core Transformers" with your leads. All three leads to a triode, perfectly parallel and together is the WORST WAY! It may LOOK cool. But leaking output signals back into a input signal, is how you make an oscillator! Af you do that, at a frequency higher than you can hear, all your power can be wasted making THAT "Dog Whistle". STUDY first, then build. Very carefully. Time is better spent on a precise, proper lead dress build, than to waste more time trying to track down a mystery problem you can't see. There is a proper, well established and time tested lead dress method. Learn it, and follow it. An amp is just a few parts shy of a RADIO, or a signal generator. EVERY wire counts. And remember, a tube amp will kill you faster than a wall socket. Have a clip jumper from B+ to ground, anytime, and all the time, you work inside! Better to forget and blow a fuse, than to forget and get blown across the room... Watch this video over and over until you "Get It". This is the right way for a British style amp. Fender style is the opposite. Straight UP, and Across. Both work, for a reason. There is a DIRECT relationship between your heater wiring, and the hum level of the amp. Your build can LOOK and SOUND awesome. But the HUM level separates an amateur build from one you can proudly use.

    No need for concern about outside foil with modern film caps etc. Maybe in some outlying instance, depending.
