    I think you would be better off of getting a 2" thick piece of closed-cell foam and put it on top of the contents. These lids are pretty thin in places. Can't believe they don't insulate the lids in the first place. Thanks for sharing.

  • @mguerramd

    I thought that was too many holes, but it is the right way to do it. I tried one hole on each end of the lid, nope. My foam did not flow throughout the lid nor did it expand and harden properly. I found this out by drilling a couple inspection holes the next day. Drill enough holes!

    Save your money and avoid doing this. The foam does not provides any advantage to regular still air and, in fact, can decrease the insulation properties of the cooler.

    So awesome! My friends and I used to hangout at the North Portal. Had no idea the south was still accessible. Last time we went to the North we were dumb enough to go during a rainstorm and got our car stuck. Had to hike about a mile back up to Summit and text my mom so she could call AAA for us since the signal was so spotty up there lol. Fortunately everybody was okay, just a bit cold and wet.

    The trail from Troy road is possible but it passes by someone's driveway, so I'd highly recommend the trail from Schulties rd. Walk north on Schulties rd until you are just past the GPS location of the Portal, right opposite a steep driveway, you will find a super steep but short trail down to Burns Creek. Go down that trail, recommend bringing a walking pole for safety. Imsearched for over an hour for this trail, once I found it, it's super easy. Unfortunately, the portal now has a lot of graffiti, compared to this video which is just 7 years old, it's horrific.

    One thing I did with these types of coolers was to take a styrofoam plank, cut to fit in the lid, then tape down with a strong tape. Ive done both ways and both work just as good. No mess with the styrofoam 😊

    Cold air sinks... modifying the lid is minimal as long as it has a snug fit. The real gain is the insulate the sides AND bottom more. Yeti's are almost all thick styrofoam. You could almost buy a sheet of 2 inch foam at HD and make your own cooler.

    curious why igloo doesnt insulate the lids themselves. is it just because of cost?

    • @videopipeline6419
      @videopipeline6419 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cost is part of it, but with a lid cavity as thin as it is in this case, filling it with foam - even high quality R7 per inch foam - doesn't help much compared to just having an air gap. The R-value of the stuff he used is only about R 3.5 per inch thickness.

    I remember my mom showing me this tunnel when I was little and telling me the horrible story of the Chinese immigrants who died there and bodies left to decompose in a shallow grave in the nearby mountains. The workers were so terrified of the flammable petroleum in the mountain that they wrote prayers on the walls and support beams. 32 people died of a dynamite explosion that ignited the fossil fuels in the tunnel. The place is definitely haunted, which is why the graffiti around there is creepy.

    Is there any chance of the foam deforming the lid so it will not fit back on the cooler correctly ? That is my fear.

  • @andrejolin8967
    @andrejolin8967 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, if u test this vs an unmodified cooler, you’ll see that it performs worse since you’ve actually made the lid denser with less insulating air. The foam needs to be fully expanded, feather light to get the benefit, yours is dense and heavy. Basic physics.

    You can hike the entire way from wright to felton if you really want to, going over the tunnels. The old paths are still there but overgrown now, so it takes quite a bit of bushwhacking, and it is quite dangerous for those who haven't spent a lot of time in those mountains. I did it some years ago. If they had never dynamited the tunnels it would actually be not that bad, because the hardest part is going over the tunnels. The easiest way to this portal is through private property, don't go that way out of respect for the people who live there. There are also tunnels that have been converted into vaults. Do not approach them under any circumstances. One of the tunnels is full of water now. It sometimes has water running out of it. If you see a tunnel with water running out of it, do not go inside under any circumstances.

    A few years ago I did a similar job on my cooler lid. I used the same spray foam but drilled one hole on each end of the lid and one hole on each side of the lid. I sprayed the foam in one end until it began expanding out of the other holes. After giving the foam a chance to set up I put a strong light behind the lid and found that I had huge voids throughout the lid. I'm guessing only 30 or 40% of the lid had foam in it. My experiment was a total failure. I was considering buying some 2" foam board and building a cooler to surround my cooler to see how that works. However, my wife received a Yeti cooler as a door prize so I don't feel the need to experiment anymore. A lesson from experience. That spray foam is extremely sticky and will stick to you, your clothes, and just about anything else you don't want it to stick to. It is best to spray it and leave it at least 24 hours to fully set up, before you try to clean it from your lid. Also, as stated in the video, there are better products to use that will do a much better job.

  • @jessechavira3492
    @jessechavira3492 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I use Spray Foam for Roofing purposes and the diffrence between Yeti and others is the Density of the Foam used. The can Foam is only 1lb density. If you use the 3.0lb foam thats the trick.

  • @Vikingwerk
    @Vikingwerk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    To anyone planning on trying this, a good idea is to get the low pressure foam for windows and doors, (usually with a purple lid) it is designed to not expand as hard, so it does not bend door and window frames, do using it for this makes less of a chance of it bulging/warping the cooler.

  • @joebonomono
    @joebonomono 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I dont buy this concept. I think the heat will transfer into your cooler faster through foam than an air pocket. Maybe I'm wrong. I think you added weight, spent money, and made a less efficient cooler. I would have also used large gap foam, less dense. Thumbs up for presentation and personality.
