      Setting aside Jon, the problem here is the rule set. Those strikes were both controlled. The inexperienced fencer on the right dropped his guard after the first strike. Continuous style fencing that inherently allows multiple strikes to the head is a recipe for concussions.

      @@danzimet4013 Agreed that the ruleset is a problem, but to me the first strike looked like it had quite a bit of mustard on it, and obviously yeah a follow up strike isn’t doing much of a favor. Another issue of the ruleset though is the grey area on what breaks an exchange. Sometimes they separate briefly and sometimes they let it go. Well great, now you get a fencer who thinks a break might’ve been called by the ref, and fencer who just keeps going against someone who lets their guard down. What a combo…

      There is a loft up above where the camera is filming from where a panel of judges records the outcome of exchanges based on a set of criteria like who attacked first, who protected themself better, whether or not the fencers ended up grappling, etc.

    I like this boxing-like ruleset where the winner is the best fighters. I think some fencers need to adjsut their fighting style and stop charging as this is something you do when you reaaaally wanna score a point, but here it doesn't work because you'll get called to separate out of measure again and again. Check the first pool winner, he had was EXCELLENT.

    Great video overall. Thank you! The slow motion parts is a nice addition.It would be nice to have "impact marks" of the hits that are counted during the first part. I also lost track of who was greend and red, so I had to go back to the beginning to see who was the winner (just coloring his name with the color of the armband would have been great).

  • @leoprzytuac3660

    Asides from the great fencing from both, I have a noob question: why do longsword exchanges tend to be so brief?

    • @selectyourvector9656
      @selectyourvector9656 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I understand and from my experience: 1. Human error. Fencing is hard and sometimes someone just doesn't parry in time, believe's themself to be out of measure when they aren't, etc. 2. Intensity. Typically we tend to creep in closer as an exchange proceeds, once you're in a closer measure its becomes much harder to react in time and see what your opponent is doing. 3. Training and fatigue. Many fencers know how they begin to slow down as a fight (or single exchange) continues. The focus on clean fencing is to hit your opponent as quick as possible- which doesn't necessarily mean on the first intention- and get out safely. Swinging at each other in a parry riposte back and forth isn't exactly the way fencers learn to improve. 4. Desire to score. Often time fencers will spy an opening and attack it, which occurs the same time their opponent ALSO sees an opening so they double. I hope this helps!

    • @leoprzytuac3660
      @leoprzytuac3660 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@selectyourvector9656 It makes a lot of sense! However, there has to be some inherent difference between two handed and one handed swords when it comes to sparring, as the later one tends to have longer exchanges more often. Maybe it has to do with the simple fact that two handed swords having more leverage just make the whole thing quicker in general.

    • @selectyourvector9656
      @selectyourvector9656 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@leoprzytuac3660 Yes I agree with that, having fenced with longsword, Rapier, Sword and Buckler, and Saber I think an inherent difference besides two handed leverage is that all of these weapons seem to engage at around the same measure. The grappling range for these weapon systems effectively stays the same, yet one can hit you from much further away (rapier has a longer measure but it still has one handes cutting mechanics). What I mean by this is although a longsword has more offline footwork and a longer reach than a Saber, you still start an exchange from about the same distance, yet that distance allows for a defender to react to a shorter reach weapon with more time, and therefore voiding and parrying becomes easier. In exchanges where both fencers play short and rush into measure it doesn't really matter what weapon you're using it ends pretty quickly (or just goes into an exhausting prolonged grapple, which is where the fun begins)

      @@StuffGong In all seriousness though, this was a long day! The format of the bouts prevented us from getting any adequate rest between rounds and even fights, and this was the point where form started to really break down. My opponent here, Justin, had some success in bull rushing his previous opponents and it looked like he was trying to replicate that here with me. It was all I could do, to meet him in the clashes and try to out grapple him! The rules format also encouraged just outright brawls, double hits, afterblows, etc -- which made it hard to keep clean!

    @frenchgalloglass5204 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is some very nice longsword fencing, from both of them ! I am a little bit confused though, is this a continuous fencing ruleset ? They don't go back to their corners after each exchange, and the judges don't call out the points but take notes instead. I'm interested to know more about the rules, it looks interesting :)

    • @selectyourvector9656
      @selectyourvector9656 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes in the ruleset it's 2 sets of 45 seconds with a 15 second break in the middle. The clock only stops and fighters return to their corners when a warning, gear issue, ringout, or any other situation the director veiws as stop worthy (such as to assess a situation with fellow staff or a grapple was particularly intense). Exchanges are scored silently by judges and are only worth one point regardless of targeting, unless 3 quality hits without afterblow, or a move of particular technical merit occurs. The intention of this to my knowledge is to inspire a very intense and "brawly" feel to the match, and without the knowledge of how a fencer is fairing between exchanges there is less chance they will take advantage of a point lead. Although I'm not a personal fan of this ruleset, it didn't prevent some beautiful exchanges from occurring

      @@selectyourvector9656 I thought it was more like boxing, where the overall better fighter wins. I think this ruleset is interesting because fighters are focused on fencing and don't (or shouldn't) rush to score a point. Some fencers didn't do better than what I call "sword rugby", running on each other and trying to push or throw until the judges call 'em to separate. But others, like these two, really show how much great swordsmanship can be produced with this tournament format.

      Longsword is either thrust or cut. It has an edge on both sides for a reason.

      They cut just fine, plenty of footage of longsword cutting through tatami. Details of the fight might be lost on you though if you don't even know what to look for

      Then you really didn't do any research. Or you're confusing longswords with its cousin estoc.

      Do you know anything or are you just a keyboard warrior, it’s probably thrust only in armoured combat, but they’re simulating unarmoured combat

    Some good movements! Green armband at 0:42 was a nice move.
