I'm a beginner quilter. I have over 37 quilt tops already sewn. I plan to sew at least over 100 quilt tops. I'm the only person in my family that cares about sewing..so I'm on my own..that's why I wanted to make as many as I can...then start practicing on a longarm quilting machine. I heard you mention "sheets"...I collected sheets to do my backing because me being new at this thought why put material when I could use a colorful sheet that would feel good to the skin since we sleep under sheets. Then I could use all my material for different pattern making more and more lap tops etc. I'm still in the process of giving away quilts to family members who lost their head of family. Once done with that then I wanted to possibly sell the 100 so I can afford a automatic pattern quilting programs and additional parts to my longarm (its been sitting still over 2 years) I could use that money to purchase a cranking mechanism and move quilts on a frame without taking it off adjusting until I'm finished. So whenever if ever I get to that part I think now the sheets that I purchased is not going to go well when I finally get to that stage of longarm quilting. I just can't afford to waste finances. One thing, for sure, quilting...lap top sewing different patterns is rewarding and very peaceful. I sincerely love it❤❤I've successfully given away 12 and have 12 more to complete and give..then I can start on the 100 goal so I can get automatic programs for the longarm and the parts. Please tell me about the "sheets" when it becomes time for me to use them on my longarm machine...I think I heard you say they won't come out right

The problem comes from quilting cotton having a thread count at around 60-70 per inch. Sheets will be at around 350 threads per inch and up. Long arm machines are not made to quilt fabrics with super high thread counts and because of that they have trouble getting the tension correct. Its not impossible but its also not reliable. I have used sheets before as a backing but I quilted my quilt on a regular sewing machine where its used to thicker weaves of fabrics like a sheet with a high thread count. Use what you feel is good for you and your budget. No one can tell you what would be right for you. However, sheets are not right for a longarm machine. Its simply a matter of asking a machine to do something that it is not built to do. This is why Diann brought up the sheet issue. I hope that helps. Enjoy your quilting. You are correct that this craft/skill of quilting is a rewarding one. 😁
