Hi All,
I’m Nate Philbrick out in Portland, OR. I am an Autodesk Certified Professional for Civil 3D as well as a Part 107 Drone Certified Pilot. I'm from a small town, Henniker, NH (kudos if you recognize from the Civil 3D realm). I attended the University of New Hampshire where I got my B.S. in Civil engineering followed by my MBA. After school, I worked in the consulting world in New England focusing on wastewater projects.
Similar to you all, I have learned A LOT from TH-cam. My goal is to create valuable, concise videos using Autodesk products.
In my free time you can find me skiing, mountain biking and whitewater kayaking in the Pacific Northwest.

brother. i love you so much i wish i could give you my kidney as a thank you. i serioulsy appreciate this video. just letting you know. take care.... have a good one <3
very awesome.. but i wish u showed us how to print the report and read it
First, I would like to commend you on your thorough explanation of the topic. Thank you for imparting such valuable information. I have a query regarding the calculation of volume in areas where we do not have a square grid shape, specifically in terms of grid xy distances. Could you please elaborate on how the elevation is factored into the calculations given that you have multiplied it by the grid dimensions? Thank you for your insights.
It would seem more professional with out the floating head in the corner.
Hi Nate, how do you get the pointcloud imagery to come through in the fbx export after all these steps? Only the original terrain texture is coming through with the topography details from the pointcloud. Thank you.
Where does the storage curve loaded @11:29 come from?
How about recap 2025?
What if I already have a CAD drawing with point layers- do I still have to export the elevation data into a text file and bring it back in, or can I simply reference that layer to create the point group?
Thx great job👏
Awesome stuff 👍
Do you have special training web
Let me know where I can donate, I might have more questions in my journey with Autodesk Build.
You have helped me tremendously with Autodesk Build. I almost didn't renew my subscription. I have a daily that multiple team members contribute to throughout the project process. Is it possible to assign the form to multiple team members, keeping the form live to all until submitted? I believe this would be a collaborative form. However, I cannot figure out how to accomplish this.
It would have to be a form created in Autodesk Build (not an editable PDF). An Editable PDF can have one of two permissions. Single contributor = One person starts and completes the form. Multiple Contributors = One person starts the form and then assigns it to person 2 to complete or I suppose a role to complete. It is only editable by the current person assigned. After person one starts the report and then assigns to person two, person can no longer edit the report. Your going to have to create a blank template and build the form in Build. The options with that is to make the form collaborative where multiple can edit at the same time OR you can make sections of the report assigned to specific people.
How do you make a form collaborative so any team member can edit, and the form stays live to all members until submitted?
Good job, can you share also how to get a high resolution imagery (TIF)? Regards
Boom boom? Lousy video for a tutorial..
Thanks man!
great video!
I can't seem to connect a weir and an orifice to an outfall node. It gives me an error stating that only one link can be connected to an outfall. How did you bypass this?
I have not found an answer as to why when I "send optimized report" why the surface scale is huge and doesn't come in the right world compared to the project.
Is he obliged to answer you? especially you're rude?
Is there a trial version for this...the setup fileis different than civil 3d
Thank you for this video. please work on your volume/elevation label color contrast for easy legibility
Sir, in data design and ogl surface too far from each others by elevation. i hope u will understand my question.
Sir, thanks u very much for this wonderful explanation. sir, here i have a one question regarding the topic when we want to calculate cut fill volume between two surface and we got the same by using volume surface option. but is some cases when we have the surface that are not intersects with each others so in this case we can also get cut fill volume accurately but when we create volume table for volume surface here we getting wrong volume value that are much differ from cut fill value we got from by using analize tab volume surface option. so, is their any option to solve this problem in civil 3d.? if so?, please share a video regarding the question. thanks u.
Hi bro, can I get a copy of your file. Thank you
Amazing, great video
Every year I look for how to do this or call our support ( I can barely remember what I did last week yet alone a year ago! 😂. This vid greatly simplified that process. Thanks for the straight forwardness.👍
Lol same! I was sick of trying to find a vid for it. Enjoy the new version of Civil!
What would you do differently to show different return periods? Most municipalities require basins designed for anywhere between the 2-year and 100-year storm events.
You can have different storm events assigned to a rain gauge. Can either run a single event (one storm) or multiple events (multiple storms) at once. Suppose If you wanted to see them entirely separately, duplicate the basin and two separate rain gauges.
Again a great demonstartion short, crisp and clear covering every single details. I like the GCP part and how were covering the data. Good one NP! Keep them coming with a HACK :)
Thanks hope all is well!
Thank you for this amazing video. It's very helpful.
can you do a grading of a residential lot in a slope area?
I really enjoy your videos. I never found something about the different types of boundaries, could it be in a future video?
Thanks! I can do one in the future. This is the adsk help. Explains different types and how to use help.autodesk.com/view/CIV3D/2020/ENU/?guid=GUID-3EF4691D-2645-4357-819C-E3FA3E14BF21 of course a visual vid is always better 😎
Now we need the ability to save that moved location so that we can use GeoMap in every dwg for that project!
Yup I hear ya
IMPORTANT NOTE for people using the Stage Storage tool. If you have a survey of a basin (i.e., a tailings dam or "bowl" shaped basin that has an uneven floor), when using the stage storage tool, the tool will ignore volumes of depressions in the basin that occur at the same elevation. For example: imagine a completely flat ground and now three holes are dug. Civil 3D will ignore the volume that two of these holes have and will only calculate the volume of one of the three holes. This means the total volume it returns will be much less than what is actually available. The stage storage tool makes certain assumptions about the land and the water storage areas, such as assuming that the storage areas are perfectly flat and uniform in shape. If these assumptions are not valid for the particular scenario being modeled, the volume calculations may be inaccurate. In reality, storage areas can have variations in elevation, curvature, and irregular shapes that may affect the volume of water that can be stored. If the tool does not account for these variations, it may underestimate the actual storage volume. I.e, if a storage area has a depression or basin that is not perfectly "flat", the tool may not accurately calculate the volume that can be stored in that area. Similarly, if the storage area has irregular boundaries, the tool may not be able to accurately calculate the volume that can be stored in the corners and edges of the area. THE FIX: Using the "Volumes Dashboard" tool instead. I wrote a short step-by-step document on how to use this method instead to bypass the issue of the Stage Storage tool. Reply to this comment with your email if you'd like me to send it.
Sir, thanks u for this tip. overall presentation is very nice. here one suggestion is due to using very high resolution it is very hard to read some value in command line and also in command tips. this is request please using little bit low resolution it will be helpful to read the all option your using in your video. otherwise u may use zoom tool when ur applying any command or option. this will be very helpful for the viewers. thanks u.
Thanks, I can see how that can happen
is this only for Recap pro?
More an Autodesk file format. Some platforms will export out an RCS/RCP so it can be read by an Autodesk product (revit for example). I think the free version of ReCap is still an option. Has a lot of limitations primarily unable to register.
Great job explaining 👍🏾
Can you do more SSA videos?
Hey, What ya wanna see ?
Best ways to begin transitioning to it. (Currently use other programs outside of C3D for drainage, but use C3D to design the site.) making an attempt to transition into using C3D/SSA. So maybe a good video on a simple design for one or two inlet pipe network which flows into a pond. Show if there is a good way to automate catchment areas and upload water drop travel distances automatically in catchment areas and CN / slopes for those areas and import all to SSA (if even possible). Show how reports are created or exported out of the program. Just typical workflow from start to finish and the most typical design usages for smallish maybe 1-3 acres commercial site design. Maybe show how (if possible) pipes sizes guessed in C3D are to small and how if changed in SSA it links back and updates in C3D. Take off tables, material counts, types, lengths etc. Just some ideas. This video about the pond was laid out and easy to follow. I don’t comment hardly any but you seem to show more of a practical use type of demonstration vs other videos where it’s just more showing off features of the program.
Maybe show best workflows for iterations on pond design as far as if the footprint of the pond how to be increased after running in SSA and then transferring the size of the pond back into C3D. Not sure if this would be done any easier, just thinking if the two programs are linked maybe it’s possible to change footprint size in SSA with an overlay of the project take make sure the new footprint fits. Not sure if half of this is even possible just throwing out questions I have since In my head the two programs talk to each other so not sure how much the can actually work with each other more efficiently…
How do you incorporate the soil percolation rate of the pond floor?
Input tab > Design Options. At the Bottom of the dialog there is an option to set the "Storage Node Exfiltration Method." Then within the storage node you can set exfiltration type. Check out page 188 of the in product help.
@@adskhack Thank you. I will try it.

Excellent bro
typical fashion for autocad it didn't work for me.
Bummer profile or workspace? Workspace is going to contain layout of tabs, panels, commands etc. Profile on the other hand contains drafting space and back end components (template location etc.). Depending on how old, profiles and workspaces can corrupt.
