A hot topic in the surf community - How to wax a surfboard properly is often argued between surfers, and the reality is that there are many methods, but the only thing that matters is that you've got plenty of traction to prevent slips. Here's your ultimate guide to the perfect wax job.
Scrape it clean:
First up, you're going to want to strip all the old wax off your board. Lie your board in the sun for five minutes and gently scrape all of the old wax off. This should be an easy task. If it's not, the wax needs more sun. As you scrape the wax, using a wax comb, you can find at any decent surf shop, be careful not to damage your board, and lump the excess together into a ball so it's an easy cleaning process after you've finished your wax job.
Apply your base coat:
Next up, you'll want to apply the base coat which is a layer of wax, that your topcoat that stick to your board consistently. We recommend sex wax as our preferred surf wax, but each to their own. Basecoat should be applied in thick diagonal lines from rail to rail, top to bottom, and then rub the wax, filling in the diagonal lines with firm rotations so you end up with a tread-like pattern and the board completely covered. Which surf wax should I buy?:
Which wax to use? Surf wax is made for different ocean temperatures. On the block of wax, it'll have a recommended water temperature, so jump online and check out your local break to make sure it's accurate. It's common you'll need to strip your board and re-wax as the season changes from warm water to cool water. In Noosa and Byron Bay, you'll definitely want a warm water wax.
Top Coat: After your base, apply a layer of top coat. The goal is to create perfect bumps so you've got grip in all the right places. Remember to apply surfboard wax, rail to rail, and if you're a nose riding long boarder, apply wax top to bottom too. For short boarders, it's best to wax your surfboard up to the top graphic, otherwise you might look a little Kooky.
Reapply:
Each time you're preparing to get salty, it's wise to reapply, especially where you sit in the mid section of the board. The last thing you'll want is the perfect peely right, only to slip and wipe out. Need more advice? How much wax?
More wax is better than not enough wax. You'll get extra traction, and let's face it, bumps help traction and grip. Don;t be a stingy bastar@. Remember circular motions, and even wax edge to edge, nose to tail if you have a longboard. It's one of the cheapest, but most effective, ways of improving your wave count. Enjoy.
