Mostly Mindful
South Africa
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 9 ก.ย. 2010
We’re Ang and Sporty.
We started Mostly Mindful to encourage people to buy less, do more, and live sustainably in the city. And we're still doing that.
But as we barrel towards our sixties (yikes!), we’re starting to realize just how important it is to age with intention.
As Jane Fonda reminds us in her TEDx talk Life’s Third Act, we are living, on average today, 34 years longer than our great-grandparents did.
With that in mind, we’re embracing active aging as if our lives depend on it. Amongst other things, this means eschewing traditional creature comforts in favor of a furniture-free lifestyle.
Why not join us? 😀
PS If you'd like to support our channel, you can buy us a coffee (one is lovely, but more are always appreciated!). If you're on a budget, no worries - simply subscribe, like, comment, and share. All of these actions make a huge difference. Lastly, consider using our affiliate link if you plan to shop on Amazon. It costs you nothing extra but helps us immensely! ❤️

Mindful Money Challenge | Our No-Spend Year Rules (Will We Make It?)
🌿 Join us for Part 3 of our Mindful Money series as we take you on our walk to the library, our favorite coffee shop, and more! Along the way, we’ll dive deeper into the practical side of our no-spend year, showing you exactly how we handle both expected and unexpected expenses (because life doesn't stop just because we're saving!).
From coffee breaks to car boot sales, we're sharing real-world examples of how we're navigating our new budget-conscious lifestyle. We also talk about how we plan on managing those surprise costs that inevitably pop up. Grab your walking shoes and let's chat about smart money moves! 💡
👉 As promised in the video, here's our complete breakdown of how we handle different expenses:
UNEXPECTED COSTS:
• We’re pre-funding small amounts every month for:
- Clothing needs
- Unforeseen social events
- Medical expenses
- Maintenance, stationery, etc.
EXPECTED COSTS:
• For events we know about ahead of time we’ll check where our pre-funding is at, and assess what we can afford. For example:
- Birthday celebrations (Sporty's turning 60!)
- Sporty’s brother Fred's upcoming visit

Thanks for your great video. Re buying coffees. I just love having my early morning coffee I purchase at our favourite coffee shop by the river. I like to think of it as a non essential but rather essential for starting your day on a happy vibe! However, coffees here in Aus range from $5.50 upwards for a mug!! Depending obviously where you purchase them, so I am not sure how long we will he able to do this particularly if the prices increase. It will soon become a non essential. 😟
Watching this tonight from a deep freeze -15C with the wind chill it feels like -23C Many schools are cancelled for tomorrow as it’s supposed to be even colder. So watching you walking in shorts was helping me wish for summer. My no spend is going ok. One slip up. A plant but somehow I feel like they should be in the grey area. Or green area. Especially in winter. And I convinced myself that it’s more frugal than flowers. lol. Did I hear you say no plant milk? Maybe I miss heard. But what will you put in your coffee at home?
I love you two! I am also doing a financial makeover this year after making some poor money decisions last year by spending too much money creating a new website and that led me to debt for the first time in a long time. Now I hate it and need to incredibly streamline my finances to pay off the debt. I'm inspired by you! Sticking to that budget so fat and even finding a little extra to put toward the debt so far this month.
Budgets are a bad word to many. My stepmother taught me in my teens about basic budgeting. I used to get R5 for pocket money (in the late 70s) It afforded me a movie every Saturday, including saving 50c most months. Looking back it sounds crazy to have had so little money and get to see a movie every week. Granted, no sweets or luxuries though. When I tell the youth of today about this, they wonder just how old I am... bwahahahaa
Good morning/evening my friends.. I hope you both are well. We had snow today in western Massachusetts over night and now we have to shovel it. Good exercise but I’m looking at you guys in this video and I’m jealous of your warm weather. 😂 I give myself a little bit of money for fun , like a coffee ☕️ date or lunch with a friend or if someone wants to go out for a shopping trip. I’ve already had some money put way so I’m not going to spend it. On the coffee ☕️ spending, I ask for a money card like when it’s my birthday or a gift., that way if I’m invited to go out for a coffee, I’ll have the opportunity to go without spending my money. Have a wonderful day ❤
aww you two are super sweet. I'm glad I found your channel.

🏳🌈New subscriber here.🏳🌈 Enjoyable and interesting video. Do You really need to buy sunscreen if shade is on your face from your hat visor? Also, how much did you spend on your walking shoes? I recently spent $13.00 for a floor mop that has a very thick, detachable, head, I can wash, instead of buying replacement mop heads more often. Lastly, how the heck do you two stay so thin?
Welcome! And thanks for already commenting ❤ Wrt the sunscreen question - the UV exposure is very high in our country and you can burn even just from it reflecting off surfaces so it is best to cover all your bases. That is a great solution to a mop if you use it a lot. The one we recently bought also has a washable head. The last one we had like that lasted for many years. And lastly 😊 I think there are a number of factors contributing to us being slim. We eat a 100% plant based diet consuming only whole foods, which could be a contributor. We exercise every day for at least 30 minutes focusing on getting our heart rate up and lastly we don't have a car so we walk or cycle everywhere.
What a lovely walking route! How did you earn those free coffees?? 😃
Thank you! Ha ha ha. We belong to a rewards program with our medical aid, Discovery called Vitality. One is rewarded for a variety of things and we take advantage of logging our work outs for points, buying healthy food for, what they call, Discovery Miles and one is also rewarded for managing money well if you have a bank account with them. You can either spend your Vitality points and Discovery Miles with their partners, one of which is our favourite coffee chain 🥳☕☕
i am now 48 and was a minimalist at age 15 when i abandoned nearly all my possessions. this was due to some personal things i went through as a kid and it was NOT easy doing the purge but without question, minimalism has made my life so much simpler easier and ZERO financial burden because i don't buy stuff! i repair what i have and only shop at supermarkets and go out and bring my own food to parks or outdoors (i live in new york city where most activities are pretty much free anyway). the important FACT to remember here is: you as an old person are closer to death than a young kid. REDUCE what you own. your time on this planet is running out and you aren't gonna take anything like the egyptian pharaohs did (they were geniuses of course, trying to take literally their objects with them to some afterlife, pathetic!). be mindful of your time and focus on health both mental and physical.
Thank you so much for sharing your minimalist wisdom here! That is a LONG time that you have already been practicing and we appreciate your confirmation of what we and this community are striving for!
It was very enjoyable to join you on your walk today. Although it's rare, we do have occasional sightings of Egyptian geese in Michigan. Take care!
Glad you enjoyed it! Interesting that you have them there too. They are proliferating here, large flocks in all the parks. It's so beautiful to see them rearing their babies in Spring 🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆
Happy New Year. Wonderful video. Thank you for being so transparent about Anxiety. I understand the feelings and selfishly happy I’m not alone. Have a great year ladies. #catmommytoo
Happy New Year! Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it. Sporty here - tbh, I have never suffered from anxiety so I didn't really understand it until Ang and I got together. No matter where the feelings come from, they are real and debilitating. Much love and support to you and all those that face these challenges so heroically everyday!
awesome video. We have Egyptian Geese here in South Texas. They are Very beautiful.
Completely agree, and we get to see them raising their young which is an absolute thrill!
Ok, you've encouraged me to finally give budgets a try. And when I set up the budget, I immediately notice how I become more careful with my spending. That's interesting. Your content and your no-spend year are very authentic, thank you very much! Finally, not always the same boring standard sentences that don't help me at all.
Yayyyy! Mindful Money at work! Well done for making a start! It's always interesting what becomes clear when we "write" stuff down. Thank you for the compliment about our content, very much appreciate your support. And these are the comments that keep us going! 💖
Ypu two are just good humans!
Aaaaw, how sweet are you! Thank you so much. What a lovely way to start our Monday! 💖
Loved the video! Back to the basics with shared passions and goals are so great for relationships!
Thank you! Yes, you are very right. We finalised our BHAG financial goals this weekend and it felt so good! It kind of consolidates things for the relationaship on a different level, if you know what I mean?
Lynn here love your walking area.😉sorry about no mop 😟
Hey, Lynn! Yes, we are super lucky. There's so much more, so we'll keep on taking you along. With us both having to work full-time again it's the only way we get out and about 😉 The mop issue has been solved, we found one on our local Amazon where we can pay for it with our rewards, plus it has a washable head so we'll be able to keep it for a long time. Win! Win!
@@MostlyMindful Two full-time jobs and TH-cam videos, that's a lot of work. I hope you're doing well with it. It's a great idea to make TH-cam videos on the go. However, the advantage is: less time to spend unnecessary money and you have more income. I wish you lots of positive energy .
Forgive me but id prefer to simply watch the original format, i wouldnt last a minute with this first thing in morning, im surprised that you chose to include this, forgive the bad feedback but its cringy blah blah blah, i love you guys and have loved every video i watched but this one is a little off , 😮
Hey, no worries at all. We're open to all feedback. This video was made quite some time ago, I think we have improved somewhat since then :) That said, we still use this morning routine. I guess, different strokes for different folks, right?
Snacks are our splurge too!😂
Ha ha ha!
It can be interesting to work out how much one can waste! It is mindful spending that makes one frugal. Not buying nothing but buying the best afordable - so that it lasts. The thing about planning a treat - say every Friday - is that it gives you something to look forward to! Alongside a big thing that you are aiming for- an item or paying off debt. I'll be watching your progress with interest!
Thank you! Yes, completely agree with your insights about how frugal living is a result of mindful spending.
I have many friends that are vegan and vegetarians… 🌱 they have given me some wonderful recipes and information on this topic. ❤☺️🙏✨
Amazing! Does this mean you are exploring a more plant-based way of life?
I would love to do this, even with two little dogs and two cats. My husband, on the other hand, isn't so keen on the idea.
The lifestyle has definite benefits and disadvantages. For example, if your home isn't carpeted it's not super comfy, as we realized when we moved to another apartment. That said, the health benefits are incredible. Plus, the fur friends love the closer connection because you're more at their level. 😁
Well, I was filled with deep sadness watching your video... Because until now I thought I was an extreme minimalist, but now it turns out that I'm not! Because you said that an extreme minimalist can only have 15...150 things. Well, I have much more.... I don't know how many, but it's around 400. But I was really convinced until now that I was one of the truest extreme minimalists, and have been for years! Because I live on only 14 square meters, including the bathroom. I don't have a bed, a TV, a closet, a table and a chair. Almost all my belongings fit into 3 backpacks: a 100-liter, a 52-liter and a 22-liter. There are a total of 213 things in these backpacks (if I'm not mistaken). The number of things that no longer fit in these backpacks is slightly less, but at the same time I don't consider them important, if I lost them I wouldn't consider them a big loss, I wouldn't grieve over them. My opinion is that ONLY those things are REALLY mine - my property - that fit in these 3 backpacks, because I can take them with me everywhere at once, even if it's difficult. So I see the rest of the things as being only temporarily with me, as if they were "on loan". But even if I don't count the stuff that doesn't fit in the backpack, I still have more than 150 things, more than two hundred, oh how sad and deeply depressed I'm now, since I'm not an extreme minimalist...Yes, I am a minimalist, but seemingly not an extreme one... Even though my apartment is much smaller than yours and I don't even have a bed... What a disappointment... Oh my... I have to cry... I don't even have a kitchen, the only thing I have is a hotplate, but I hardly use it either, because I follow the carnivore diet, and even the raw version of it, meaning I almost always eat raw meat and raw offal. Live insects too. Because my hobby is bushcrafting, and even "survival in extreme conditions". This is also why I need so much stuff, because I need a lot of things that an “ordinary” extreme minimalist would never need: things like a tent, a survival knife, a machete, a hatchet, a saw, a ferrocerium rod for starting a fire, a tarp, a metal drinking bottle, a metal cup, a sharpening stone, a parka that is also good for the Arctic and also “Arctic” cargo overalls, etc. My goal is to be as independent as possible... I also have snare wire traps, I know how to use them, so I would feel quite comfortable even in a temperate jungle. In fact, I don’t mind eating only live earthworms for days. I’ve done it more than once, on numerous occasions, without batting an eye. And I have eaten living mice, rats, spiders, cicadas, locusts, grashoppers, etc. This is really the minimum that can be expected from a professional survivalist! But I'm not a real extreme minimalist, because I have more than 150 things, I'm not able to follow this sacred rule, oh, now a world has collapsed inside me, what a shame... And yet, how proudly and haughtily I've proclaimed myself to be an extreme minimalist, that I've freed myself from the temptations of the consumer society, that I resist the siren songs encouraging me to buy, that I've recovered from consumer idiocy... and lo and behold, it turns out that I still suffer from an excess of stuff, I'm just a miserable hoarder, addicted to objects... By the way, I'm an almost 60-year-old man, and I've been following this lifestyle for about 6 years. Yeah: I didn't write the above seriously! I mean, of course, everything I wrote about myself is true, correct, down to the last word, the only thing that's not true is that I'm sad about it because I'm not an extreme minimalist. I most definitely DO consider myself to be one, even though I do have more stuff than 150. But as you can see, it's not that much more... Besides, those who have less than 150 things are very dependent on large distribution networks. They have to live in civilization. NOT for me! I am really able to survive in the jungle, alone. I'm far more independent than they (the common extreme minimalists) are! I'm already preparing to stop working in a few years and live off-grid, without electricity, far from civilization, like a kind of "mundane hermit". I collect not stuffs, but skills, for example I learned how to whistle melodies, I learned the mongolian throathsinging, how to make bone tools and stone tools, how to practice Tummo meditation to make my "inner fire" awakened in order that I don't freeze in the extreme cold, etc.
What about going camping? You can't take all your stuff in a bus or on your bike
Our TH-cam friend Susanna would disagree, check this video of hers 😄 th-cam.com/video/dqSRnqtLwGI/w-d-xo.html However, while we dream of doing what she does someday, for now, we'll simply hire a car. 😎
the haircut is spot-on!! (1) I have a budget for coffee! hehe (2) even though we do meal planning, we still do a pantry stock take every 3 months, so as to find any items which are expiring within the next 3 months which I place in a basket at the front of the cupboard so that we can use them, because out of sight is out of mind. (3) having a monthly 'treat' allows you to know that it is coming up and you will not need to buy most of the unnecessary snacks ;)
Wow! That is such a great system to have. We do a declutter sweep every 3 months and will definitely take this idea from you! Thank you 💖
Great video! I have cut my husband’s hair during Covid. I buy a package of 6-8 haircuts once a year at a very reduced price from my salon. I am doing no spend January. Excluding clothing and activities for my granddaughter. So far it’s going well.
Ooooh, that is such a great thing for a salon to offer. I haven't heard of that before. Over here, they offer pensioner discounts so that's definitely something Sporty will take advantage of from April 😄
At what age you can have your pension.?
In South Africa, you can start drawing at 60. 😀
My snowball is caffeine. If I have a cup, I would dive into a half pack of crisps or half a bar of big chocolate. I do not drink at all.
It's crazy how one thing just leads us by the nose to the next, right? Do you still drink coffee and manage the fallout or do you try to avoid it? :)
@MostlyMindful I was good. Having maybe 1 a day at most out and about. But when my mum insisted on having a kettle at mine for Christmas and woulsnt take it back... I'm back down the habit hole of 5 lattes a day! The sugar alone is 50g! And then adding all the sweet treats on top is 😫. So I'm currently having 3 a day. Thinking of throwing the kettle back at my mum in March, when it's warmer.
@@extrememinimalistparent Oy vey, I can see why you don't want a kettle in the house. 😅 Also understand waiting until it's warmer. Good luck though! Three is way better than five! 💥👌
Can you show a more detail of your budget columns. I am in the process of redoing a more simplified budget
I've just conferred with Sporty aka our resident Excel Queen and she says she'll create a template budget for us to share. We'll share it on the Community Tab as soon as it's ready. x
@@MostlyMindful oh wonderful!
Welcome to Part 2 of our No-Spend Year journey! ✨ If you missed Part 1, you can find it here: th-cam.com/video/jZdQIDXzKrE/w-d-xo.html 💭 What's your biggest challenge when it comes to spending? Let us know below! 👇
Great video! Glad to hear you are getting the tech under control. Unfortunately my wife's screen addiction was a huge factor in the breakdown of our marriage and I would hate to see that happen to you lovely women. There is nothing lonelier than being next to someone who is constantly glued to their phone on the couch or in bed! Louie.xx
Aaaahhh that's so sad, sorry Louis. Fortunately, it never really got that bad with us (we like to gab too much lol), but these days we've instituted Deep Love Couple Time - no tech allowed, just to be sure. x
I agree that living a frugal life is a learning process. We learn from our mistakes and do better next time. It forces us to keep our minds open to the inevitable challenges. But that's part of the fun, especially when we see good $ results. Great haircut! Sporty is hired!
This is a such a great point, thank you. We have realised over the years tht one of the most important things to getting older intentionally and maintaining an independent lifestyle is to be open to change. And when it comes, embrace it with both arms! It's either WIN or LEARN, as you say And I humbly accept the position 🤣
Blowing your tight budget on chicken, as a vegan, is a great kindness! ❤ Money well spent. My mother always says: if your hand is closed for giving, G*d can't put anything in there either. Open hands are best.
Your Mother is a wise person! Thanks for sharing that wisdom, defny something to be remembered 🤗
So far January has just been a warm up month! Starting really hard in February! When I tell myself I’m not spending money on this or that, it makes it sound like an order! I get my rebellious side up and say , don’t tell me I can’t have something! Definitely snacks are the hardest! I hate to cook, but love to eat!😂😂
Great way to start. A soft start, much easier to keep going, then! So happy you are joining us, looking forward to the updates along the way 🤗
The biggest construction site in the past was deciding which things I needed in my apartment: What kitchen stuff, what furniture, etc.. Oh what a disaster, I spent a lot of pointless money. Then I saw the idea of furniture-free living from you, among others. The best furniture is no furniture. The best kitchenware is not kitchenware. If I can cut something with a knife, I don't need a machine. Minimalism is not enough for me. I try moderate extreme minimalism. For me, moderate means: no competition and furniture only when it's difficult and complicated to do without it.
Sounds like you have your minimalist philosophy in a straight stripe 😃 I particularly like that you have a caveat for when things are difficult ot complicated so you are not too hard on yourself 💕
@@MostlyMindful Your videos are a good support in finding and maintaining my straight path. Thanks a lot!
@@Minimalistretiree You're so welcome! 💚
Good Haar cut. I cut my Haar to
Thank you! Amazing that you cut your own hair. I don't have the confidence to do that at the the moment. I used to cut my own hair many moons ago so I have some idea, but I have to admit, cutting Ang's hair for the first time was a bit nerve wracking!
Over the last couple months, I realized I need to get better control of my Amazon shopping and junk food problems. The latter is for health reasons mostly, but it does impact the budget, too. So far, I'm about 75% on track in January. The junk food is harder to control than the shopping. No surprise there! 🤪
Well done for identifying the culprits. I think that is sometimes the hardest part. We also spent ludicrous amounts of money on junk food when having a glass of wine. 75% is fantastic! Well done and thanks for sharing!
I'm the same!
@@MostlyMindful Thanks for the encouragement!
@@extrememinimalistparent If I can do it, you can, too!
It'll be interesting to hear your rules. Have a great week!
Yip, it was pretty interesting making that video, see you back here on Sunday 😎
My hardest category is thrift shopping for clothing. I want to develop a minimal capsule wardrobe with the clothes I already own and downsize the rest. Paired with that will be replacing shopping with other activities. Love your special walk and picnic each week and coffee reward!
This sounds like a great plan. I saw somewhere that when planning a capsule wardrobe it is advisable to select items that pair well with others so you can mix and match to change outfits. Good luck and let us know how it goes!
Welcome back! Loved the tour!
Thank you and yay! We're doing more of them because it's fun for us too. :)
Beautiful haircut! Excellent. You may be able to continue without going to the salon. Wahl's clipper with comb attachments can do layers, but so can scissors! Lots of TH-cam videos on this subject! Bravo!
Oh wow! Ha ha ha! I didn't even think of looking on TH-cam. Thanks for the heads up, maybe I can make the next one more salon-worthy! 🙏
I’ve been cutting my own hair also. 😊Lynn. Love you both..
I've been doing the same.
Hey Lynn, love you too for the continues support 🤗 I'm in awe of anyone that cuts their own hair! I used to but have got lazy over the years. Once I am more confidemt with cutting Ang's hair, I might turn the scissors on myself 😟
Yes! Learned to cut my hair during the pandemic. Saves so much time & money!
Glad to see you back 😍
Thank you! We're glad to be back. The break was good but we missed this community a lot!
This video freaked me out! (in a good way😄) I feel like we, and maybe many people right now, are on this same wavelength of wanting to move past the limits of screen and social media and tap into richer experiences more often. I am trying to navigate that and I like the tip of only going online with a specific intention, otherwise for me it often ends up feeling like a waste of my time. Walks are one of my favorite activities (especially if there is a cafe at the end where there will be almond croissants, good conversation, and lovely day playing in the background!🥰) I haven’t finished this video yet but had to stop because I actually gasped when you guys mentioned the Camino de Santiago. I just told my husband YESTERDAY it’s my dream to walk that someday. Maybe this is a sign from the universe to encourage that dream/goal. Anyway, back to your video. Please stop freaking me out lol
Also your videos are definitely an intentional visit on youtube for me, and never a waste of my time!
Ha ha ha sorry for freaking you out! Don't you love these signs and serendipities? Let us know how your plans unfold - will you be going soon-ish or is it a bucket list wish for later on? :)
Aaaaaahhhh that's so sweet of you to say - thank you! x
@ Probably when my son goes off to college… but he is only 11 right now😄I mentioned it to him and he said I will be too old to do it then (I will be 49). I told him don’t worry people do it of all ages! Perhaps in a couple of years when he is a teenager it will be possible.
@@RosalieWhite-i5x It's Hilarious. Kids have zero concept of age, hey. Anything more than 25 is ancient when you're his age. 😂
