Fledgling American Goldfinch Says Hello to the World
This baby American Goldfinch (fledgling) just left it's nest today and was sitting on a branch taking in the sights of it's new environment. Also sheltering itself from an unseasonably cold wind. It likely emerged from it's shell about 11 to 17 days ago. This was filmed in mid August in Ontario, Canada, so this is probably a from a second clutch of the season.
Note that I was using a very strong telephoto lens to keep my distance as I did not want to alarm the fledgling, or it's parents.
If you see a "baby" bird (fledgling) on the ground or on a branch that appears to be helpless, do not pick it up and try to "save" it. This is a perfectly natural and necessary step in their path to adulthood. Rest assured that the parents are nearby watching over it, and will be feeding it and helping it navigate it's way in the world.
