Not “strings,” Thread. It is a mindless fungal life form that somehow (another plot weak point) leaves its native planet as a compact spore and unwinds into threads as it enters Pern’s atmosphere. This happens when its planet is close enough during the orbit of the two planets around each other, something that happens every several hundred years. That’s long enough for the Pern settlers to forget how to handle it and grow complacent. Oddly, the two planets’ close passage is enough for these spores to cross over but does not cause major planetary damage as I would expect. Oh well, it was a good read and as you say, it was the foundation of multiple popular tropes.

The 5 Hindrances 1) Sensory desire (kāmacchanda): seeking for pleasure through the five senses of sight, sound, smell, taste and physical feeling. 2) Ill-will (vyāpāda; also spelled byāpāda): feelings of hostility, resentment, hatred and bitterness. 3) Sloth-and-torpor (thīna-middha): half-hearted action with little or no effort or concentration. 4) Restlessness-and-worry (uddhacca-kukkucca): the inability to calm the mind and focus one's energy. 5) Doubt (vicikiccha): lack of conviction or trust in one's abilities.

Ibn - Fahadlan... Ahmed (as far as I recall) ...ibn-Fadlan as they spelled it. He was from Baghdad which was (at the time) "the most beauful city in the world" (...which quite possibly it was!...). We're talking about late 9th/early 10th cent. He was a real-life character that travelled (just as they say in the movie) through the lands of the Bulgars (Bulgars of the Volga) and then Northwards, Khazars & others. Someway along the voyage he met the Vikings, and describes a Viking funeral, but that''s (more or less) where his journal ends. We do not have anything about him later on (problably due scarcity of the sources, or maybe 'cause his own source was partially lost through time). That's where Crichton picks of the story and invents this whole "sub-plot" with the Vikings taking him North & so forth. The book was Great. The movie was FANTASTIC. PS. All the best stories have two things in common. The first one is a journey - the second ...a sort of ..."clash of cultures" (...for lack of better word...).

To answer your questions, yes, Yes, and YES! I don't remember whether I borrowed & read Dragonflight, etc first, or whether I read "The White Dragon" first. But I specifically have memories of read "The White Dragon" while on vacation with my family in 1974. I totally fell in love with the series, along with the Harper Hall books, also. I've been a life-long fan, and I still am at 64 years old. I also am sad, now that the film technology is available to do these stories justice, that a film or TV series languishes in development Hell. I see your points, BTW, about Lessa being in survival mode, and yes, I can see how the mindset and premise would not age well (of course, in 2024, with Project 2025 looming, and our current election upcoming, perhaps such a male-dominated society with no care for a woman's wishes would fit right in!) I believe, at that age, and era, I did just see it as "the great love story of F'Lar & Lessa". I think I'm going to need a re-read to look at it with older eyes! However, my thought also was that perhaps Lessa was simply looking at it as her duty, and what needed and had to be done to get thru the upcoming Falls. And, BTW, it's *THREADS*!!! Not "strings"! Thread falls! I believe it was called a mycorrhyzoid (spore?) substance that was carried in the frozen tail of a comet with an eliptical orbit, or some such, that then fell to P.E.R.N.'s surface in falls (I picture driving sheets of rain & hailstorms) of great strands, gouts, & clumps of this writhing (perhaps acidic) stuff. As to Lessa being in constant survival mode, another author of similar era, Margaret Atwood, does this to many of the women characters in her book "The Handmaid's Tale". In it, they also did what they had to do to survive. I enjoyed your review!

Did you ever read the stories from Dragonriders of Pern? I ask because this looks nothing like what is described in those books! In the series, the Dragons had to chew a type of rock to be able to breathe fire, and they were not into attacking humans. Also, the humans began a breeding program to enlarge the species known as Fire Lizards to Dragon size. The purpose of this was to have a way to fight against the devastation that came when the Red Planet drew near to Pern; a devastation that came in the form of threadfall. Theadfall was from the Red Planet and it was like acid to living things, both animal and plant! You took clips from other movies, stitched them together, and tacked the Dragonriders of Pern title on your resulting video! If I could give you an extreme 'Dislike', I would!

A few problems: 1) Your "dragons" were actually wyverns. 2) Dragons on Pern NEVER flamed humans. 3) Lessa was never timid. She was strong, fierce, bold, and calculating. 4) I didn't watch it all the way through because of these problems, but I did see several of your "dragons" flaming as they flew, but I didn't see any Thread. Dragons take flaming seriously. They wouldn't waste firestone to flame for no reason, and definitely not for fun.

Thank you for the review. However, I think you maybe missed some subtleties and ideas that make this book rather less problematic than you seem keen to make out. For instance, maybe they didn't tell the protagonist she would be required to mate because they didn't want her to back out, given their whole world was at stake? And the idea of an arranged marriage is a staple of many cultures still in our own world. Maybe the author intended a commentary on that? Sadly, this kind of judgment of alien cultures is almost everything wrong with today's neo-colonialist America and it taints everything it touches, even great achievements in literature written by women, it seems.

I am deeply INTP. Overall the descriptions are pretty good. One thing that felt incorrect to me is the reason given for why we spend so much time alone-as a defense mechanism against guilt from our trying to help backfiring; I didn't relate to that section of the video at all. The reason I prefer to be alone is because people and their small talk and extraversion are beyond exhausting, and I have better things to do with my time. Also, the delayed response and mental lag time frustrates the heck out of us, too. It would be awesome if the great responses we come up with an hour later had shown up when they would have actually been useful. The part about nostalgia did not ring true for me either. I value Information and experiences from the past not for sentimental reasons, but to make wiser decisions in the present and not repeat past mistakes. To say we are nostalgic contradicts the perception that we are all robots without emotions. The rest of your descriptions felt pretty spot on. Thanks for a fun look into my insides :)
