Eleven Official Languages of the Northwest Territories
Everyone knows that Canada has two official languages - English and French.
But, did you know that the Northwest Territories has eleven official languages!?
They are Chipewyan, Cree, English, French, Gwich’in, Inuinnaqtun, Inuktitut, Inuvialuktun, North Slavey, South Slavey, Tlicho.
Many of these languages have been an integral part of the landscapes, the culture, and the peoples of this land for millenia, and continue to be! This law might not make it so that everything is translated eleven times - but it does do so much to protect, and to work to grow the usage of these languages into the future!
P.S. Thank you all so much for sticking around! I've recently moved - so we're figuring out how to build the right set up in the new space, and we will be getting back to making new videos real soon. I'm so appreciative of all the encouragement, support, and great ideas that we've received through this project so far - and can't wait to be back! - G

Rideau Canal: Ottawa's Not-So-Hidden Gem
มุมมอง 1.4K3 ปีที่แล้ว
The Rideau Canal was built out of military necessity. It was widely believed that the Americans and their new country of the United States would try to invade and take Canada for their own. Canada's weakest link was the route between the two major cities of Kingston and Montréal - bordered directly by New York State, it was not considered a safe route for the British Navy. So, they built a cana...

Lynn Beyak, Canada's WORST Senator
มุมมอง 2043 ปีที่แล้ว
Senator Lynn Beyak was named to the Senate by Prime Minister Stephen Harper in 2011. Since then, she has been removed from the Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples for harbouring racist views - has been removed twice from the senate for refusing to apologize, and for doubling down on those views - and most recently, illegally donated to the 2020 Trump campaign. มุมมอง 4.8K3 ปีที่แล้ว

มุมมอง 6864 ปีที่แล้ว
In the Second World War, the allied convoys were being excessively attacked in the 'Mid Atlantic Gap' - where following aircraft could no longer provide cover. Great video and very informative. I didn't know all this about our northern states and Canada. Thank you.
This was so informative.
Could never come close to building anything like this now.
I was born in Kap during the 50's and first lived and worked there three decades. All I knew was there had been a prisoner of war camp during the two wars. After attending university and working another decade 'down south', I returned and became radio journalist at CKGN, the nascent community radio station for the French community. For one of my articles, I remember interviewing the wife of one of the guards stationned at the internment camp during the Second World War and was surprised at the disdain she had for the prisoners. Later, when I prepared a retrospective about the camp and interviewed Mr. Dubien, a town councillor and businessman at the time, all he wanted was to let sleeping dogs lie and try and shut down my story. Didn't work. A few few years ago at the Ron Morel Museum one could still read an article written in German which refered to the Kapuskasing camp as a Konzentrationslager. Yes, that is the way 'concentration camp' is written in German. Upon visiting the cemetary around 2005, I noticed a lead plate on the cairn bearing the name of the deceased prisoners had been defaced having been almost completely ripped off with what appeared to have been a log hook. Some may want to banish or deny the thought of the inhumanity perpetrated in Kap but it's always best to be honest and clear minded about what we can learn from the errors of our forebears, lest we forget. Don't get me wrong, Kap's an outstanding little town with citizens daring enough to pull together and purchase the Spuce Falls Power and Paper Company which was due to shrink to a shadow of its former self in the early 90'. A quarter century later the pulp and paper mill still generates the lion's share of the wealth in town.
Thanks for the video. Good job!
What an excellent report. I was born and raised in Kap, my great grand father was a guard there in the war , and you brought to life a story we just are not very aware of. Thanks!
Wow, this Californian learned a LOT! We frankly never think about this region or how the Lakes drain to the ocean. I have Irish ancestors who nearly 200 years ago maybe worked on the locks near Cornwall. And others who left England for Quebec, eventually to NYC 60 years later. So, I came to learn, and I did!! Thank you! I think you could roll the credits with Gordon Lightfoot in the background at the end. 😊
I sure miss home.
This community has become a disaster
weird comment with no elaboration.
A totally terrific video. I than k you for your hard work, research and creativity in producing this highly informative video. You are to be commended in the highest order.
Very informative & makes me want to travel to see it. Crowd fund an old man from England anyone? 😂 Never visited Canada & always wanted too. 😢
You’ve earned yourself a subscriber, young man. Do you know what happens with all the dredged material and how much of it there is per year?
Thank you for recording the passage.

. my grandfather was interned in Kapuskasing 1914 to 1918 . i always wanted to go and see that place . he loved Canada and later settled in Alberta . so much we do not know about the past .
The Welland Canal the final connection to the inner Great Lakes.
Disappointing
I just want to find that original movie on Escape from Iran - with Donald Sutherland in it! it was more accurate, well done And came out around 1987
I saw the original movie made about this with Donald Sutherland in it. Around 1986 or 87. Argo was very upsetting. They lied .. figures- Americans have to make themselves look like the heroes. Thry even fid this in war movies about Gen Patton. He did not take Rome in wwii. The Germans were long gone out of Rome. The Cdns broke the German line in Italy, paid with their lives. Only about 12 or 18 Cdns left by noon - out of 120 or do. None of the other allies wanted to do this suicide mission ( across a large ditch - where Germans were on 1 side, Allied forces on the other. The Germans could shoot down on whoever tried to cross this line. But Cdn 48th highlanders did it. Under Montgomery. Because my husband was one of those few. Not a German in Rome. But the Allies had to be given credit for something. Patton got credit for taking Rome, even though he did nothing.Years earlier, my husband transferred to England - to join 'the top regiment ( 48th highlanders). ahe sailing when the Americsnd came into the war(after Hawaii got bombed) , they even came with their ice cream trucks!! England was on such rations, they hadn't seen choc in 4 yrs! Yet the Americans came to England, throwing their money around. The British women used to say , They were overpaid, overfed, oversexed, and over here!! I'm trying

the guards were the mosquitoes and black flies. it was a dreadful ...while it’s a shadow of its former self, Kapuskasing is still very much the “Jewel of the North”...
