Testing the voltage touching the leads with your fingers? I wouldn't do that. The LED lamp is not isolated and you can get high voltage from any point to earth, through your body.

Even fast-forwarding through the nonsense, that's *still* about 5min of my life I'll never get back. Dropping in 1 battery every year or two, vs keeping a 6W bulb powered 24/7/365... and covering up the LEDs yet if the light's too distracting?? Oh brudduh...

Break a WORKING LED bulb to power a wall clock which would run on AA batteries for years risking to burn down the house and using more energy (6W for the whole ensemble for a clock that needs 4.5mW)? Yea, pointless.

The reason behind the battery is to get rid of the cables. What if there is no plug available? After the blackout you will need a battery operated clock to adjust the modified one.

Wow! This is complicated even for me. I'm a 75year old CET. If yo don't know the secondary voltage or current, here is a simplier way to find out. 1) find out if the transformer is step-up or step-down. This is accomplished by measuring the voltage at the secondary. If you have 120v at the primary and 12v at the secondary, then the transformer is a 10:1 step-down. 2) get a large value potentiometer, somewhere around 10k. Put the pot in series with the primary. One side goes to the line in and the slider (center terminal) goes to the transformer. 3) put AC voltmeter across the same pot wires and plug it in. Adjust the pot until you have 1/2 the line voltage, then unplug from source and measure resistance across the pot. Use Ohms law to calculate the current through the pot using the 1/2 votage drop and the resistance measured. 4) multiply the calculated current times the turns ratio found in step #1. In our example it was 10. This gives you the current rating at the secondary. Why is this true? Because in any transformer, the power is the same on the primary and secondary. Therefore, if the voltage decreases, then the current increases proportionately. Have a blessed day!

The problem of using super caps is that these caps like regular ones have linear voltage drop and you can only use the voltage above the LED forward voltage and you also only get maximum light at the very first seconds and it will gradually drop until you get no more light so the useful light is maybe 25% of the actual charge plus they won´t light as long as batteris by far. but I made a super cap Dynamo light myself and you only have to wind it for a few seconds to get a minute of light out of it so it is a nice thing to have in case the apocalypse happens

8:28 is very interesting when you see the blue coating puff up as it heats when it triggers & blows the fuse. I'd never seen that before. Hence showing the susceptibility to "burning up" failure mode. You can see why cruise lines really don't like surge suppressed mulit-way leads as given their highly surged supply the chances of blowing the MOV up with the repeated triggering must be pretty high.
