Totally awesome 1969 demo of Pong! He describes his pretty sophisticated "curve-ball" feature. Programmatically, it's not super advanced. But what's cool is that it humanizes user-interaction, and introduces "game physics".

My half-brother and I played Quest for the Rings after he was released from juvenile hall in 1984. He also played the Hardcastle and McCormick theme song on an electric guitar.

Magnavox were no fools. The Odyssey2 was already the least powerful console of its generation, despite releasing a year after the Atari VCS, and the Odyssey3 was literally just an Odyssey2 with the ability to display an additional layer of static background graphics. Imagine releasing *that* in 1983, the same year as the Famicom which was years ahead of its time. The difference in tech between those two extremes is almost an entire decade. They were wise in choosing not to launch it in the US.

"Play Tic-Tac-Toe." You've got to be kidding! I got 3D Tic-Tac-Toe for Atari a couple years ago, and didn't feel like learning how to beat the computer; maybe someday. Blackjack? Ugh. Still, it wasn't a sure thing that Atari VCS would be a winner when it came out in 1977. Atari might have gone away after 1980 if Intellivision had scored the rights to Space Invaders instead.

The generations after us may never know the simple joy of chasing a small group of pixels around the screen. Or avoiding them. When this was first released my next-door friend had one. That's when it started and I'm still playing now at 53 years old. <3 Not this console, of course. :P

"And twice the challenge!" I can't recall playing a videogame where I wished that it were harder (except the Kirby games). Why were marketing people, advertisements and commercials always talking about "challenge!" during this era. Was it to suggest to parents we would just keep playing the same game over and over again because it's so damn challenging 🤔
