Spoiler Alert
What does it mean for Christians to say Jesus is a king? Father Justin reflects on the book of Revelation as a "spoiler" of how the story of life ends: with the Lord Jesus ruling over a peaceful, reconciled, and healed creation. Christ's reign over creation is eternally true, but because he reigns by love and not by force, the world can still be a chaotic place. That's why we need to come to church and have the end of the story spoiled for us again and again through the preaching of the Gospel.

Love Your Puddle

Father Justin uses a children's book called Puddle Pug to unpack Jesus' moral framework. Jesus acknowledges that we live in a chaotic and violent world, frees us from feeling paralyzed by the immensity of the problems we face, assures us God has those problems in hand even if we can't imagine how, and enjoins us to attend to the neighbors whom God puts in our path through our lives, networks, a...

Love is Better

Father Justin considers what Jesus tells his disciples when they go "people watching" in the temple. Jesus points out that the disciples don't know all the facts about the lives or the hearts of the people they're observing, and that their snap judgments of these people lead them to inaccurate, unfair conclusions. In the end, love is better than judgment.

God and Grief
มุมมอง 2421 วันที่ผ่านมา
Father Justin reflects on how odd grief really is. Grief is the process of relearning how to live our lives in the physical absence of someone (or something) we have loved, and it involves every emotion under the sun: sadness, fear, anger, regret, relief, joy, and more. The book of Revelation records a series of visions of the spiritual dimension of life, one of which depicts God coming to huma...

Playfulness is a Spiritual Power

Rev. Phoebe reflects on joy and playfulness, which she grounds in the intuitive wisdom of children that is particularly revealed on Halloween. In dark and gloomy times, it is so important to our well-being that we remember we can still play and have fun. She also discusses Jesus's message that children have wisdom about the kingdom of heaven-that they can lead us into the promised land. And tha...

Intangible Religious Benefits

As St. Barnabas launches their annual stewardship campaign, Father Justin reflects on the teaching and example of Jesus, who reveals God to be a God who helps. People in the Greco-Roman world conceived of the power(s) that ran the universe as badly behaved reality TV stars or, else, an impersonal force. Jesus proclaimed and embodied the God of love, who is a servant of his creation and comes to...
Priceless

Father Justin takes a look at one of Jesus’ hardest sayings, that it’s easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for someone who is wealthy to enter the kingdom of heaven. What seems, at first, to be a legalistic jeremiad turns out to be a word of grace. Jesus’ culture esteemed wealth as a sign of righteousness, or good behavior, and Jesus doesn’t think the love of the one he ...

Sunday, October 6, 2024 St. Barnabas’ guest, Maggi Dawn, tackles one of the most difficult passages in the New Testament: Jesus’ teaching on divorce. She takes a closer look at the intense debate Jesus finds himself in when he’s asked about divorce. She focuses on Jesus’ reference to the garden of Eden at the beginning of his teaching. Jesus is saying, in a perfect world, there would be no divo...
