    Alvin stardust should have represented us in 1985 It was the catchiest song

    This was the year that the BBC, in all their wisdom, banned any groups from participating. The result is a complete dirge-fest....every song is just dire. With the exception of Alvin Stardust, and even he was just going through the motions, none of the singers had any charisma or stage presence whatsoever. Both Annabel and Kerri Wells look like they bought their outfits for twenty quid from the Littlewoods catalogue. How Vikki placed fourth at Eurovision with that completely lacklustre song and performance, beggared belief. This was the start of the whole Contest becoming a complete irrelevance for the rest of the 80s.

    If Sinitta was supposedly born in October 1963 (according to the internet), How come she's only 18 in April 1984 (she would have been 20 going 21)???

    Flip I never knew Sinitta and Hazel Dean had been in the running for 1984 Song for Europe. I like songs 5 (I wanna be where the action is) and 6 the best (let it shine)

    Ryder were great. The song “don’t hang up on love” would have done so well at Eurovision but maybe a bit too typical. The “war of the roses” was my personal favourite.

    Song 8 "Lover Come In" was by far and away the best song here, and sung and performed superbly well by Brendan Faye. Quite similar to the folk pop of the seventies, very easy on the ear.

    I thought "Everybody" was the best song, albeit not of the kind likely to do much at Eurovision. After that "What you Gonna Do" was worth a look. "Too Hot to Handle" may have had the best chance at the contest. The rest were somewhat non-descript.

    You can play safe with the familiar or take a punt on something that brings more to the table. I have a feeling the right song for the contest won. I just think there were better songs and/or more interesting options: 1. Nina Shaw - "Look at Me Now" - a strong song, good singer, contemporary in the best sense. 2. Sinitta - "Imagination" - the exaggerated dancing distracted from the song, but edging the rest in being ‘with it,’ high energy. 3. Miriam Anne Lesley - "Let It Shine" - decent ballad, but would it stand out in a contest? 4. Belle and the Devotions - "Love games" - Motown rehash, average voices. It catches the ears and the eyes, so may be a safe selection. I just wondered ‘why?’ at the time and still do. Idle. 5. First Division - "Where the Action Is" - lively song, energetic vocals, of a type we’ve seen many times before. I really didn’t like the remaining three and shall say no more. That Hazell Dean song, though ..

    The national final performance of bardo is worlds better here. How did the orchestra butcher their home entry in the contest? I also believe their vocals are nicer here, and they have more space to move on the stage. Its still good at the contest but it wouldve definitely got a better result if it was like this perfomance.

    Interesting to see that in the national final Emma gave a much stronger and less childish performance than in Zagreb - but nevertheless my choice would have been Kim Goody's "Sentimental again" ... 💏

    Well, to me: "High windows" by a mile. 👌 😨 Remains a mystery to me how "Go" could even get close to "Ne partez pas sans moi" in Dublin. 😣😾 Before the last set of votes from Yugoslavia I threatened to break our TV screen, if the UK would beat Switzerland that year. 👊 For once it worked ... 😰 Usually I agree with the winning song once in ten years only (1961, 1970, 1979, 1988, 1995 and 2014).

  • @joshlevicq6823

    Well, Terry Wogan always seemed to be drunk, but I guess in 1986 he was close to a forced admission. By the way, were all hairdressers in the UK on strike or what? 😨 Nevertheless I'm actually positively surprised. "Runner in the night" is one of my most disliked Eurovision entries ever and I'm still furious about each single point it received in Bergen. So I pretty much expected a preselection nightmare here. What proved to be true - until the very last song: "War of the roses" would have been one of my favorite UK entries ever, joining "Where are you" from 1998, "I can" from 2011, "Love enough for two" from 1980 and "Lonely symphony" from 1994. 🌹 Love it! ♥ All's well that ends well ...

  • @joshlevicq6823
    @joshlevicq6823 ปีที่แล้ว

    😏😼 Ah, back in time when a fourth place still was considered a bad result for the UK - and when people obviously wore shocking glasses. By the way, i never really understood the urge to drag along chairs onto stage. And what's the black thing she's crumpling? Fishnet tights? Anyway, I would have preferred "Dancing in the night", but on the other hand the UK has sent much worse entries to Eurovision than "Love is". 🐚

    Voting results (by seven juries located in Glasgow, Birmingham, Bristol, Belfast, London, Manchester and Cardiff, each of them awarding a set of 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 and 15 points): 1. Bardo 76 points 🏆 (incl. one top vote from London) Fun fact: In Harrogate Bardo scored 76 points as well, incl. two top votes from Luxembourg and Austria. =2. The Touring Company 69 points (incl. two top votes from Birmingham and Bristol) =2. Good Looks 69 points =4. Lovin Feeling 60 points (incl. one top vote from Wales) =4. Paul Curtis 60 points (incl. one top vote from Northern Ireland) 6. Q Feel 59 points (incl. one top vote from Scotland) 7. The Weltons 58 points 8. Rich Gypsy 53 points (incl. one top vote from Manchester)

    It seems like a lot of people didn't like this year (UK at least). I'm wondering what everyone's thoughts are on 1984? Imo most the songs that year, if not all of them, were good. They were a lot more fleshed out and had far fewer low moments. (However, I personally don't like the winning song, Love Games. Probably the flattest of the bunch). If anyone hasn't seen it, here's the link to the 1984 Song for Europe. Credit again to ESC UKFan for archiving it!: th-cam.com/video/aG_Vmb9XkEM/w-d-xo.html
