I have been motorizing and building plexiglass enclosures for some of my automata so that they can be displayed in public. This one is Happy Trails, a cross country skier. Cross country skiing is one of my favourite winter activities. Enjoy!

Automata Dog Walker (Updated)

Automaton of a man walking his dog. I have revised the mechanism driving his free arm by linking it to his legs rather than the dogs legs. I think that this gives it a more natural motion overall. Website: cphughes-art.ca

Awesome 🎉
Thanks! I have fun making these even though it is a long process. I've had a few requests for plans for Morning Walk but as they are one of a kind builds I don't make plans that would be useful to anyone else. I'm currently putting together a video of how Morning Walk came together and will post it here when it's ready. Thanks, Chris
Excellent work
Thanks RJ, That's very kind of you. Chris
Incredible work. What do you use for the brass rivets (?) in the joints? Thank you.
Hi Tim. Thank you for your kind words. I bought the brass rivets from Lee Valley, a Canadian woodworking store: www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/hardware/fasteners/40386-brass-rivets Thanks, Chris
Do you sell PDF's for the diagram of this project?
Hi Cathie. Sorry, as my automata are all one-off projects I don't have a set of plans that I could provide. They are made through a combination of crude sketches and a lot of playing around in the shop until I get it right. Thanks, Chris
Good morning, my name is Francisco, do you have any mold or cutting and assembly diagram that you can make available?
Hi Francisco, thank you for your interest. Unfortunately as all of my automata are original one-off projects I don't have detailed plans or diagrams. I start with some simple drawings and do much of the figuring out using prototypes to decide on the final design. I would refer you to Automata Magazine at automatamagazine.com. I think you can download the first year's issues for free. Thanks, Chris
Is that cup for use as a poop bag?
So timeless!
Thanks tartgreenapple!
@@automata-maker Love your work friend! 😍
😊👍👍👍
Vos automates sont magnifiques. Je les trouve très poétiques. Félicitations Your machines are magnificent. I find them very poetic. Congratulations
Thank you Gilles. That's very kind of you. I enjoy both the process of making them and the result.
Оригинально!!!😊
DO you sell these? This is amazing and I'd love to add it to my collection!
so cooL!
What a nice project! Did you do the wooden sculpts and the motoring all by yourself?
Greetings! Yes, I do all the design and carving here at my home workshop. They are long projects but very rewarding.
So.... who wins!?
I'm afraid they are destined to carry on this battle for a long, long time with no clear victor.
Not sure what is going up but hell yeah
Thanks Crowbin.
That’s quality……..
Thanks Trevor!
🤍
Lindo!
Very cool where can a person get tips on building something like this.
Thanks Curt. There are some good 'building automata' videos online and I would recommend Automata Magazine at automatamagazine.com/
Nice, love it!
I am a kayaker but also a woodworker and sometimes do motley cabinet and musical instruments and your works fascinate me made by an accomplish artist. Bravo!
Thanks Jefkab. That's very kind of you.
Very very nice, well done!
Excellent work u r very talented
I have revised the automaton to make the motion appear more natural. I linked the free arm to the dog walker's legs rather than the dog leg mechanism. You can see the results here: th-cam.com/video/9dSfFMZbEEo/w-d-xo.html Thanks, Chris

Sweet motion❤
As an avid kayaker, I love this!
Thanks Stephanie! I like kayaking too, and luckily live close to the water. We were just out for a paddle yesterday.
@@automata-maker Me, too! :-)
timing and flow are really important here...too bad he missed it completely...!
Thank you all for your kind comments.
Love the way you used the little tabs to help switch the body's position from side to side! Very creatively done!
Pretty cool guy for a 'bot. Thanks.
Thanks East Man, I had fun making this one.
I commented before about the eyepatch, this is now excellent, full of threat, splendid moves... knock out character...
Reminds me of school day's, many years ago👌.
Splendid, superb actions, finish, just about everything going for it. Most impressive, a credit to you, plus I bet it was a frustrating joy to manufacture...... !!
Thanks! It was certainly a long and interesting process. I started with a rough prototype and then carved the figures. The mechanism came together after that, through a process of trial and error.
Chris i think i told you, you're a genious. Thanks for uploading this amazing video
Thanks! I'm having fun making automata.
Chris you're a genious, really awesome work. Greetings from Chile, at the end of the world.
Thank you very much! Greetings from Owen Sound, Ontario.
That eye patch is really cool, splendid touch if I might hazard an opinion.....!!
Thanks, its become a permanent feature of the Swordsman.
That automata is so lifelike in action, splendid detail indeed.....
Thanks! Cross-country skiing is one of my hobbies so I knew how I wanted to action to look.
@@automata-maker I mentioned to my wife that it was very real looking and she agreed with me (made a change). Knock out design...
I wish you the prosperity of TH-cam
아주 자연스러워요 ㅎㅎ
Cool. Natural moves are the best!
Hello👋🙋♂️ there.. Amazing and very interesting project.. Super like👌👌👌 Thanks for sharing Do keep posting👍 Warm regards and best👍💯 wishes The UnknownManCub 👍😎👨🏭
Love it❤. Something about the movement.
How did you make it? I am learning about Automatons but I definitely can't make one like this
Hi Mega Wolf Art, thank you for your interest. I don't think I could go into all the details here, but I would highly recommend Automatamagazine.com as a source of information on making automata. I will have an article appearing in Automata Magazine in July that explains how I designed and made the grooved-drum mechanism that moves the arms on The Swordsman. Thanks, Chris
Thank you all for your kind comments. These are very engaging projects and I enjoy the problem-solving that goes with the design and building process.
Beautiful object and very convincing motion. Great job, thanks for the video.
Thank you for your kind words. I am having fun making automata and enjoying the challenge that each new piece presents.
I really like this! Never seen one like this before. You did a wonderful job on it.
Beautifull work!
Hi friend! This is awesome! Thanks for the video. Best regards.
Hi! I'm a high schooler in an intro to engineering class and for our cams unit, my partner and I decided to do a skier. Would you possibly be able to explain how the treads/chains move back and forth and what makes the skiis move? Thank you so much!
Hi. Each ski is attached to the adjacent ski pole by the brass chain. Each brass chain follows a race track pattern, with a wheel at either end. As the drive arm on each cam pushes the rod connected to the ski pole back and forth, the chain attached to the same rod pulls the ski (and leg) in the opposite direction. There is a small spring attached to the chain under the ski that removes the slack in the chain. There is also a thin piece of plywood placed between the two wheels on each chain. This is to prevent the screws holding the wheels in place from being bent towards each other over time. Good luck on your project. Chris
