Fully 3D-printed lampshade
As a fun weekend project I decided to make a fully 3D-printed lampshade for my room. Because of the bright colours however, it kind of looks like a childs bedroom light.

Why 3D Catan is unplayable, and how to solve it.
มุมมอง 51K5 ปีที่แล้ว
I have encountered a problem in playing the 3D settlers of Catan board game that I made in my last video. but after some quick thinking and designing in fusion360, I was able to come up with a reasonably elegant solution for this problem.

    Why don't you take the resource cards and make a deck among them and shuffle those instead? For the Desert tile you can just roll a d20 right before you draw and if you roll a 2 or less then the desert tile goes in that location instead if you roll above then draw the top card from your deck. Each time you roll less than what you need for a desert tile increase the value for it by 1. Once the Desert tile has been placed then stop rolling and keep using your deck. Then once the tiles have all been placed take the deck you made and put the resources in their appropriate pile of cards.

    I just use the cards as a blueprint. Shuffle the base set cards as usual, and then match the arrangement with the 3D tiles.

    Just coming across this video. A great option without having to print any extra pieces is just to take a resource card for each tile from the resource deck and one knight card to represent the desert tile, shuffle the newly created deck and draw from the top to see which tiles get placed in the spiral setup.

    Are the harbor tiles the only one that were made for a single color printer? I found the link to the other tiles, just wondering if those can get printed in a single print?

    Shuffle the cardboard tiles and then lay out the random isle. Then replace them with 3d tiles. Or, what I usually do is put all the 3d tiles in a cardboard box and hold it up so no one can see in. Each player reaches in a takes the first tile they touch and put it on the board touching another tile (after the first) Random board achieved.

    My guy, use the cardboard pieces, shuffle them up, then use the 3-D printed pieces and the layout. Just use the cardboard pieces as a layout.

    I mean.... just shuffle the cardboard tiles, lay them out, then once the board is complete replace them with the 3d printed tiles. Seems like a pretty easy fix

    I just got D&D Monopoly, and it's surdda a let down =( just a very lazy port, SO I decided it needs a revamp of adjustments such as you did with this Catan. I just can't find anyone who has even tried to craft it better and I don't have access to a 3d printer so I'm stuck lol..... Instead of houses and hotels, I would think it best to Have Taverns and Inns, also the currency should have been coins and not paper bills.....the jail should have been renamed Dungeon jeje cause why not!! it really just needs so much rework, and if at all possible some mini game to make use of as d20...maybe to when you get to a purchasable land/monster, before buying it, you should best it first, otherwise you may not purchase and keep on going........just a thought though.....I just really luv D&D and know someone out there can TOTALLY make it better ;)

    Wait. You couldn't randomize the island? Really? Yeah you can. There is nothing stopping you from randomizing the board. What the actual fuck do you mean?

  • @alexhaag599
    @alexhaag599 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    To make it random we just grab them randomly out of the box, then we rearrange the tiles until the entire group agrees on a layout! Once everyone agrees then there is no reason for anyone to complain!

    Please add links to the felt and magnets and also please add the stl for the clips to hold in the magnets on thingiverse. I am going to my own Catan set, but I think I will just print your magnetic bases and then put flat tiles on them. Then print some stickers to put on it. I feel like the 3D texture would just get in the way of gameplay and obstruct the view of the numbers. I also don't have the painting skills lol. That Catan set is truly a masterpiece though, very well done.

    I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video! You did an AMAZING JOB in creating your 3D printed CATAN game! I actually purchased CATAN 3D Edition because I felt intimidated by the thought of undertaking the project myself, but your video showed me that all it takes is the right equipment and supplies, the right STL files, the right frame of mind, and time to get it done! Your video is inspiring (even 3 years later)! Thanks for uploading it to TH-cam and I'll be sure to check out your other videos to see what else you've been up to! Thanks!

    Assigning a 3D hex to a specific # token is a bad idea, in my opinion. You just cut down on the board possibilities by a whole lot. There are 2 ways to do this: A) Just get your regular Catan hexes, arrange them randomly, and then copy the layout with your 3D hexes. Because if you have 3D Catan, you SHOULD also have the basic game as well B) Or even simpler, just go to the many board generators you can find online.

  • @cleftturnip7774

    What paints did you use? To get that level of colorfulness for the green I need to apply 2-3 layers and even so the brush marks are quite visible. Also mixing standard acrylic colors is quite more difficult than what is seen in the video. How much water did you use (or none at all)?

    • @jakwiebusprojects8634
      @jakwiebusprojects8634 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have used some miniature paints of the brand 'game colour'. I straight up mixed the paints without adding water. I only tend to add water if the paint is already drying out a bit, like when a mixture I've made is already a few days old (my mixing pot is old and does not close off very well). I did not encounter any issues regarding mixing, although it take a lot of trial and error if you have a specific colour in mind. In the video the mixing is not shown completely but cut short, which might give the impression that I wasn't stirring for several minutes. In terms of layers: yes often there is a need for a second or third coat, especially in the 'number disk' circle. In a lot of the pictures shown in the video, brush strokes or different levels of coverage are painfully obvious. I would advise here to not strife for perfection. The world is littered with imperfections and colour hues. Maybe the brush strokes and imperfections make it more alive. I have seen people even deliberately using a very diluted paint as a second layer to provoke these inconsistencies. But if a even colour is what you are after, you will indeed need at least two layers of paint.

      The only problem I have with 3D Catan mods is that you lose the ability to flip over the tile to use it as a "water" tile.. there are some 2-player fan-made variants that involve flipping over some of the tiles to make less available land (because it is for 2-players) and this sometimes creates "lakes" in the map that are kinda interesting to play around....if you go all in with the 3D investment you are kind of stuck with playing traditional Catan only...and forced to have 3-4 players all the time
