Elliot Butler (b. 1997) is a composer based out of Bloomington, IL. Butler composes music that interweaves the rhythms of popular music with classical forms and genres to create an artform that can be easily accessed and enjoyed by all listeners, regardless of their musical background. Butler has had pieces performed locally and internationally, highlighted by the Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra’s commission of An Overture to Harmony in 2023, and the 2024 recording of Elehiya by the Song and Dance Ensemble of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

As I get older, I find myself fondly remembering what life was like as a teenager; this piece is a musical expression of one such memory. During my teenage years, I lived in a tiny rural town in North-Central IL. This town was so tiny that, no matter where you were in-town, you were probably no more than a block away from a cornfield or cattle pasture. While this may seem stifling, I loved it. I would often bike the small, barely-more-than-gravel country roads surrounding my town, enjoying the freedom that comes with just picking a road and riding into the horizon. In this piece, you'll hear two main themes. The first theme is characterized by a more rhythmic, dance-like quality, and the second theme is characterized by a more relaxed, coasting feel, almost sounding pastoral at times. I picture the first theme as representing the pace I'd start out at as I pedaled vigorously through the corn and bean fields, trying to push my speed as high as it could go. The second theme evokes a more leisurely pace, as if I were coasting down the road, catching my breath, and taking a little time to enjoy the view as I pass the herd of cattle grazing in the rolling pasture. The form of the piece utilizes a symmetrical A|B|Development|B|A form, reflecting the scenery I passed on the way out of town before I'd eventually turn around and return home. I don't think that the seventeen year old version of myself ever really knew how good he had it, and how much those Memories of Fields and Pastures would mean to him, ten years later.

Elehiya is the phonetic spelling of the Ukrainian word for Elegy. Young boy walks alone, exhausted, drags plastic bag, inconsolable sobbing. This was the image I saw from Ukraine that inspired me to compose this piece. It is to victims like this nameless young boy that I humbly dedicate this Elehiya.

Hey! Nice to hear from you! I think it all depends on where you live. If you are a united states resident and under the age of 18, the National Young Composers Challenge is opening up their submission process soon (I think). There are also many film scoring contests, one of which you can find here: cine.org/hamlischcontest/ But again, where you live really changes what competition you can enter, so basically googling composition competitions or something would probably give you more information than what I have. =)
