    I just kept waiting for the murder. The book was almost over and then there was a murder and I couldn't care less. As a guy, I thought the men were even more poorly characterized then the women. Like guys in their 30's would act like hormonal teenagers just because they are together again was beyond stupid.

    Honestly, the hardest book I’ve ever read. Also all the issues with Tristan’s and Callum’s family, which felt over done and unnecessary. And then ALL the weird scenarios after Callum is shot. Like, what? Just, what? Plus all the flashback’s to Ezra’s Six, am I missing how they actually related to the main story? And the incessant author’s comments that Atlas was the “bad guy”, but he never felt bad, just selfish from childhood trauma. Plus it felt like the actual language used was just unnecessary. It felt like a bad English essay.

    Great talk about censorship at the end. I do think its important for older kids/young teens to know about more adult themes so they can understand a bit more about their own situations. although i also agree that some kids could get a little scared by a especially dark book.

    What is a TBR?

    • @jamiebookclub2000
      @jamiebookclub2000 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Tbr stands for "to be read" as in a list of book that you want to read but haven't. A physical tbr is a pile of books you physically (or digitally) own that are unread and nonphysical tbr is just a list of books you would like to read in the future.

    When the magical GUN came for the sacrificial murder I was *d o n e* The plot of this trilogy had so much promise and it epically fumbled. There was so much laid on the table for the library of Alexandria to have a wonderful magical lore....it did none of that. If an ancient Roman/Egyptian library hands you a gun..............I just can not. I rage read the last half of TAP and all of complex just hoping it would be redeemed. Then in her acknowledgments at the end, the first sentence is "the truth is I wrote this trilogy from a place of rage." WE KNOW. WE COULD ALL TELL. I'm done 😂 I absolutely love hating on this series. I will stick to my belief that if a different author was given the plot and general beats it would have been a very cool/interesting take on a secret society protecting an ancient library that likes to incinerate itself.

    This was great, and the book was great!! I got late-homestuck Terezi vibes from Harrow.... I took up the series /because/ of how people compared it (often unfavorably) to homestuck! I can see how the Characters' speaking style & the humor could turn people off, but it was exactly those things that had the most of that homestuck flavor attached to them. I think for people who had never seen that modern mode of speaking paired with a genre that is so heavily scifi-fantasy like Gideon the ninth was, was probably very jarring. This was a lovely review :) I have to say that the only thing that bothered me about the book was that no-one seemed to have a unique "Voice"- the things each character said was different and their personalities shone through in their demeanor and actions, but none of that clear and obvious character building was put into the way these characters spoke.

    I’m not sure if you know but both the boys and invincible were originally comic books so if you’re okay with non-animated gore then I think you should check out Invincible at the very least it’s a fantastic comic. Otherwise my recommendation would have to be Nimona both the comic and the movie are very well regarded. Anyway thanks for the in depth review not a lot of TH-camrs are taking the time on this one and I just reread it because I heard that the sequel is coming out soon so I’m getting excited for it. If you’re looking for a series with a bunch of world building and plays with the good vs evil theme a bit I recommend the Super Powereds series by Drew Hayes. Anyway thanks again!

    I bought all these books blindly. I read the back in the store and thought it was going to be awesome. Fantasy. Great! The first book was decent but not a favorite. Paradox lost me too, and Complex dragged and hurt to read. It couldn't keep my interest. This series is messy and the author tries too hard in my opinion. It's a bunch of word salad. Jumping from person to person stopped working after the first book too.

    I've never tried a reading challenge. I have goals for books I want to read or attempt to but If I'm not enjoying myself or feeling enriched I see no shame since reading is like a downtime hobby. I just know reading challenges are Not for me because I have a stack of books and my taste at the moment can be a little unpredictable.

    I personally wasnt lost in paradox or complex but more than anything it just felt like nothing happened. Like the story was just spinning in place and not really accomplishing much in its page time. Weird comparison but it felt exactly like watching the recent Gossip Girl reboot lmao. Just empty calories, no substance, and shoddy surface level attempts at social commentary and critique. I did like a lot of the character work. Like I found their voices and personalities were all extremely clear, but thats not enough. I think she shouldve come up with a stronger idea for an ending prior to even writing the series so that she could build towards that the entire time.

    Thank you for this review! The Atlas Six got me back into reading and again in love with books, so I was hopelessly optimistic for the Atlas Complex - sad to say, I wholeheartedly agree with your review. While I can ignore the lack of character or world development, I need a book deliver a powerful theme or message. Essentially, the theme of the Atlas series can be summarized by the very last chapter in the Atlas Complex - it’s a small section based on Belen Jiménez’s (Dr. Araña’s) POV when she was trialed for environmental terrorism. The Atlas series is supposed to be a reflection of our modern society to showcase knowledge can either cripple or improve our world. The Atlas Complex made a bunch of valid points such as environmental activism and universal healthcare. However, that’s all it is, a bunch of points thrown about and not a cohesive story. There’s no moral compass or an overall message of how we can improve, just an extremely vague case study on modern society. Finally, I despised Libby mostly because you can tell Olivie wanted to frame her as the reader’s POV to show that regardless of morality, anyone can be capable of atrocities. However, like you said, it doesn’t make sense to frame Libby this way when the remaining characters are killing people for sh*ts and giggles. If there’s anything to take away, is that this book bables on for 400+pages when you can read books with far deeper meanings at less than 100 pages.
