Two big problems: The shell companies would have been a legal structure if they had actually moved assets to those LLCs to be managed. They were blatantly dishonest in how they approached hiding their assets. The church did not start donating upwards of a billion dollars per year to humanitarian aid until the whistle was blown. Before that, they donated $2.5B over the course of 35 years.

Behold, there come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt: 30 And there shall arise after them seven years of famine; and all the plenty shall be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine shall consume the land; 31 And the plenty shall not be known in the land by reason of that famine following; for it shall be very grievous. 32 And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass. 33 Now therefore let Pharaoh look out a man discreet and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt. 34 Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint officers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt in the seven plenteous years. 35 And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities. 36 And that food shall be for store to the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt; that the land perish not through the famine.

I’m not transparent about my savings. The moment I was, everyone started holding up their hand and asking for a chunk of it. And they all assumed they had a right to it or didn’t have to work hard for it, like I did. I don’t blame the church for hiding their investments. If they invest in a stock, people are just gonna mimic their portfolio. And when they reveal how much they have, people immediately think they have a say in what the church should do with it. I’ve heard all kinds of accusations, from solving the homeless problem by throwing some billions at it, to members thinking they had a right to stop paying tithing because the church was supposedly able to survive on the interest it was getting. And none of these people were able or willing to really sit down with one of the financial managers of the church and ask questions before pointing the finger. Personally, I’ve seen the church help so many people that I’m confident that if I ever need something, like really need and not just convenience, I can go to the bishops storehouse, talk to my bishop about fast offerings, talk to a representative who can help me find a job, or something else.

@VincentNoot i would say you have no responsibility to share your personal financial information. My assumption is you haven't claimed to be the one and only direct line to communication with God. I also assume you haven't made your money by collecting charitable donations under the pretense of building God's kingdom on earth. All to say you aren't/ shouldn't be held to the same expectations as the church. I for one have paid tithing and fast offerings for 25 years as an adult with a reasonable income. It has been very disappointing to discover the truth about where a portion of that money has gone.

He is 100% correct about the feud. Russ Nelson is on record expressing his disdain for the nickname “Mormons” as early as the 1960’s. His not-so subtle feud with Hinkley came to a head when Hinkley tried to end the matter by giving a talk in General Conference, during which he said the “nickname” was a proud tradition, and that he didn’t care what nickname people used as long as the church was the subject of conversation. The only timing, as you speak of, is that of a transfer of power in the church. As soon as Nelson became prophet he was free to wipe the hated term “Mormon” off of almost all church literature, markers, signs and so on. To drive the point home, in his conference talk he proclaimed the name Mormon to be “a win for Satan”. That’s pretty Much SNL Church Lady material, don’t you think? Ironically, if you were a member during the “I’m a Mormon” ad campaign, I’m gonna make an educated guess that you were proud to call yourself Mormon. If not, then the church was spending your tithing money on something you apparently opposed. The church has a way of changing history and tradition and convincing members it had ALWAYS been that way. This is called propaganda. Comments like yours are evidence the propaganda is effective.

It wasn’t until the Ensign Peak whistle blower claim that the church started donating closer to $1 Billion annually. Although this is a substantial step forward, $1 Billion is a very low percentage to their annual surplus and investment gains. This is not what Jesus taught.

Brigham Young did indeed make Utah a slave territory when he endorsed and legalized slavery in the Utah Territory in the mid-1800s. Historically, in 1852, the Utah Territorial Legislature, under Young’s leadership, passed the Act in Relation to Service, which permitted both Native American and African slavery. This is a documented fact that reflects the legal framework of that time, though the number of enslaved people in Utah was relatively small compared to other states. From a biblical and Torah perspective, the Bible speaks of slavery in various contexts, but the ultimate message of both the Old and New Testaments is about liberation and freedom. In the Torah, we see instructions about how to treat servants with dignity (Leviticus 25:39-46) and the practice of the Jubilee year, where debts were forgiven, and slaves were freed (Leviticus 25:10). In the New Testament, Jesus speaks of freedom from all kinds of bondage, particularly spiritual (John 8:36), and Paul speaks in Galatians 3:28 about equality in Christ, regardless of race or status: 'There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.' Additionally, many of the Dead Sea Scrolls and other early Jewish texts emphasize justice and mercy, values that are in stark contrast to the practice of slavery. While Brigham Young may have allowed slavery in Utah, it is clear from the teachings of the Bible, the Torah, and the writings of the early Jewish people that God’s heart is for justice, mercy, and the freedom of all people. Slavery, as an institution, is incompatible with these core biblical principles.

Brigham Young never actually said that black people "ought to dwell in servitude." If you look at the original Pitman shorthand transcript on the Church History Catalog website for the talk he gave on January 23, 1852, he said he was firm in his belief of servitude, not that he was firm in his belief that black people ought to dwell in servitude. That was added by George Watt, the recorder of the sermon who edited and altered it before publication. Brigham Young went on to clarify that that's why he refused to call it slavery in Utah, and why it resembled indentured servitude more than Southern slavery.

For the sake of full disclosure: Humanitarian donations were $2.5B from 1985 through 2020, so around $70 million annually. There’s a past quote from elder Oaks where he says around $40 million annually, so it’s accurate to say $40-70 million annually on average from 1985 through 2020. The figures they put out since then are $900 million in 2021, $1 billion in 2022, and $1.36 billion in 2023. The increase in humanitarian aid came right at the time of the start of the whistle blower complaint and SEC investigation. That’s not a good look.

Instead, the Church continued to hoard and hide it and ended up being charged and fined by the SEC for violating disclosure regulations.

It's interesting when we have to define and interpret words, especially words like "objective" and "factual". I've noticed, especially in lds apologetics, that these words have an extremely broad interpretation and use. It's also very interesting to see this living oxymoron of a you tube channel, an apologetics channel for the lds church that claims to share factual information while consistently and continually supporting "a win for satan" by claiming the name of the religion as mormonism. Almost as if the creators of this channel know the true problems of this institution....

The Rock in the Hat is pure fiction. Joseph had a bunch of wives I knew this in seminary in the 70's. wife's as in sealing, not consummated relationship. Joseph was pretty prolific with Emma, Fanny was pretty prolific with her husband. Yet no Children from Joseph and Emma. hmm. All documentation to what happened in the barn is hear say.

@@randydouglass8872 Everyone who was present during the production of the BOM said that Joseph Smith used the "seer stone in the hat" business. EVERY.SINGLE.ONE. And some of those people said that Joseph didn't even need the alleged golden plates to be present while he was "translating" them. LDS church president Russell Nelson has acknowledged the "stone in the hat" business. The fact that Smith may not have sired any children with his "plural wives" does not mean that he did not have sex with them. At least seven women swore legal affidavits that they had been "plural wives" of Joseph Smith and had sex with them. Two of those women, who were married to other men, believed that some of their children were fathered by Smith, which makes it obvious that they were having sex with Smith as well as their legal husbands. If Smith's "spiritual wifery" practice had only been about platonic "sealings," and had not included sexual relations, polygamy would not have raised an eyebrow in Nauvoo, and Smith would not have been killed over it. Smith's own counselor in the church presidency, William Law, opposed polygamy, and wrote in his diary that Smith "had lately attempted to seduce my wife, and has found her a virtuous woman." Law filed legal charges of adultery and fornication against Smith on May 23, 1844. I suggest that you read an article titled "Joseph Smith’s Indictment for Adultery and Fornication", by John Dinger LDS historian Todd Compton published his definitive history "In Sacred Loneliness: The Plural Wives of Joseph Smith" in 1997. Of those 33 women, Compton wrote: "In the group of Smith’s well-documented wives, eleven (33 percent) were 14 to 20 years old when they married him. Nine wives (27 percent) were twenty-one to thirty years old. Eight wives (24 percent) were in Smith’s own peer group, ages thirty-one to forty. In the group aged forty-one to fifty, there is a substantial drop off: two wives, or 6 percent, and three (9 percent) in the group fifty-one to sixty. "The teenage representation is the largest, though the twenty-year and thirty-year groups are comparable, which contradicts the Mormon folk wisdom that sees the beginnings of polygamy as an attempt to care for older, unattached women. These data suggest that sexual attraction was an important part of the motivation for Smith’s polygamy. In fact, the command to multiply and replenish the earth was part of the polygamy theology, so non-sexual marriage was generally not in the polygamous program, as Smith taught it."

Those “cursings” are usually predictions, not spells. In other words, what WILL happen, not what SHOULD happen. It’s like when they say this sin shall be on you and the next 3 generations or something. That doesn’t mean they tried to curse the next generations with negative consequences but instead, knowing how people raise their kids and pass on their flaws and weaknesses on their posterity, more of a prediction as to say, “what you did will have an effect on future generations,” no matter how sad that may be. If Noah ever said something like that to Ham, it would be more like a prophetic vision than him using magical powers to curse him. “Hey Ham, it’s sad but I had a vision. Your posterity will be enslaved by others in the future. Sorry to be bearer of bad news. And no, it’s not right, but it will happen. I saw it. And I’m letting you know about it.”
