Most likely when the turbulence eased Karen would have just assumed that the white pilot had taken over and flown through the storm. The passengers couldn't see what was going on in the cockpit and her prejudice wouldn't have allowed her to think the black woman had done it.

The drama overwhelms this story. Too bad. It almost gives it a distressingly patronizing quality that does little to expose and eradicate racial and gender stereotypes. A lot of female pilots of color are regularly commanding passenger airline flights (not enough, though, we are going through a serious pilot shortage and we need a lot more: regardless of gender, or race) for the various airlines. But the narrative of this story yields almost a "straw man" quality: a quite insensitive attempt to illustrate the pervasiveness of bigotry in some people's inter-racial attitudes. The story itself has a dulling sheen of improbability to many frequent airline passengers who have never experienced an encounter like that described: either with a self obsessed Karen, or a hidden thunderstorm threatening their very lives on final approach. By way of example: it is hard to believe that a captain getting ready to board the aircraft to prepare for a transcontinental flight would have taken the time to stop before boarding to respond to anyone's remarks about their qualifications to command that flight. The fact that she was at the gate, regaled with a captain's uniform is all it takes to portray an individual who has obviously succesfully bid the flight, (implying even to the dullest mind that she was qualified to make it, or she would not have been allowed to bid it in the first place.) But most recognize that anyone with a captain's preflight responsibilities would likely have no time and extremely little inclination to jazz in the boarding area with a passenger while the gate agent is patiently waiting for the crew to board because the open boarding door is a threat to security and needs to be closed as soon as the crew is identified and enters the jetway. The flying audience is also going to recognize that it is far more likely that Jason would have been outside doing the walkaround, not standing at the gate defending the captain who hardly needs a tall white guy to defend her skills against disparagement by a boorish antagonist. It is almost as if the narrator is suggesting that female pilots of color are helpless until a big blonde Caucasian hero steps up to rescue them when their qualifications are being impugned. Finally, regular airline operations often result in flying through unexpected weather phenomina that are not at all life threatening: both pilots are adequately trained for those contingencies . During the frequent recurrent simulator qualifications that all airline pilots must go through routinely, the simulator instructor almost always will throw the qualifying pilot a thunderstorm to manage on a tight instrument final approach during the inbound leg from the outer marker--or some equally unsettling weather altered operational anomaly. The encounter dramatized in this story as a life threatening event would actually fall within routine cockpit resource management. Recognizing the very worthwhile moral of this story, it is a little sad that the author presents it to us as an over dramatized fictional encounter between heroes and villans, instead of as a credible exposition of the often barely concealed racism and sexism that is lamentably all too prevalent in our society.

My first helicopter ride over 50 years ago was as a civilian spotter at night in a severe windstorm as they fished duck hunters out of a duck blind at night. The pilot hovered the huge Labrador over each blind. I was amazed watching her hands and feet constantly moving on the controls in the wind gusts. Another time in a 747 the landing was so smooth I didn't feel the wheels touch . I complimented the 2 woman pilots as I left.
