I play this game without subtitles and Voice Over at 0%, because it's annoying when characters say their help lines when they go near the wrong action. I sometimes tell them the SU word.

39:00 He knows it was him, the thing he doesn't believe is that the cult exists, he thinks these are random bandits to use for the girls to "Roleplay" them as cult of diabolos members. So yeah, what physically happens is real and he knows, he's just oblivious as to WHY stuff happens. He just improvs to play into the "Roleplay" he has going with the Shadow Garden girls. To go to the Batman comparison, he's not Bruce pretending to be Batman. He's some random dude who trained to be as personally powerful as possible because he wants to realistically roleplay batman and made that his main personality, so he's some dude roleplaying Batman, who has to pretend to be Bruce Wayne as part of roleplaying Batman. To him "Cid" is just another role he has to play to be an Eminence in Shadow. But I do agree that this show isn't a 10/10, despite me being a complete shill for it. And now that you're done with season one, I can go back to a comment I left on ep11. In ep 11 he meets and fights Aurora, who uses blood controlled by magic to fight. It's commented to be an "Ancient Battlefield Technique" In ep 13 he actually learns her name and that she's called a Witch Now in ep 20, he copied it with water, calling it "The secret art of the Witch" and Beatrix immediately goes "A Vampire Attack?" So from just those 3 points you can extrapolate a bit. Namely that in the past it was a technique that was used by some people to fight wars. That Beatrix saw it used in her life, by Vampires. So, uh, Vampires are a thing now, and they use an ancient technique to fight with blood infused with their magic. And because Aurora uses it, it sets up a connection between her and vampires. But because these 3 points are scattered over half of season 1 and let 6 episodes pass in between calling back to it, most people will miss that this is even a thing. I only notice stuff like that because I more or less watch most reactions to this show, so I see it a LOT. I don't expect anyone to catch it on a first viewing. And as you rewatch this show, since you already know what future episodes will do, you start to notice subtle hints here and there about lots of small things that are told in this way. And yes, this also extends into season 2 and into the currently LN only parts too. I'm not going to say Eminence is unique in doing this, but I am crediting it for having 20 episodes to cover the same length of the LNs that other shows usually only get 12. that's 8 episodes more time to add such foreshadowing and give a few seconds of screentime to those hints. If other LN adaptations also had the luxury of 20 episodes for 3 volumes instead of 12 they probably would be paced way better too. And if you watch it and look at the animation, you can see that Eminence uses (sometimes) animated stillshots with a moving camera a LOT. In episode 1 when it pans over a still of a street at night, the SAME image used again in ep 15, but daylight this time. So yeah, even to me, a super shill fan, the show loses points for having some really terrible animation at points (Or not having animation at all, as it were). I honestly would recommend to either rewatch season 1 a bit before doing season 2, or going directly into season 2, because if you wait and let your memories of what exactly happened in season 1 fade a bit, you're going to miss a lot of the callbacks in season 2 to things that were set up in season 1.

He thinks the "setting" of this being a fight against the cult of diabolos is fake. Magic, killing and the destruction he causes is entirely real to him, he just doesn't give a fuck. No mistake, Cid isn't a good person. But he also is aware that he's fucked in the head. So when his opponents start talking about the cult and everything, he internally goes "Yes yes, my delusions are acting up again together with confirmation bias to align with that bullshit story I made up that one time". The thing is he's aware what signs insane people exhibit, say believing your made up bullshit is real. So whenever anything confronts him about what he said being real, he intentionally ignores it. I paraphrased it, but that's explicitly an internal monologue explanation in the LN, that both the manga and anime cut that specific bit out is a shame. My man gaslit literally everyone in this show, even himself. First he gaslit Alpha and the girls that his make-believe story was real, and when confronted with evidence that it IS real, he gaslights himself that it's fake. As for people not recognising him or Shadow Garden people, in the LN they all wear masquerade masks, in the Manga it's changed so he uses magic to shadow his face and in the anime that is done away with altogether in order to show us their faces and expressions during fights and the plot. The anime really could have done with showing what he actually looks like from other people's point of view at least once.
