Now for some real soaring - 1st glider flight

After slope soaring RC planes for a while, it was time to experience some real soaring in a glider. The Cape Gliding Club in Worcester hosted us, unfortunately with not much lift on the day. The glider was a 30 year old ASK13 which flew beautifully.

Preceptor Jet slope soaring at Signal Hill

Although the Preceptor sport jet from Phoenix Models is designed for a 90mm EDF, I thought I would try it as a slope soarer. With a fresh 40-50 km/hour wind blowing up the slope at Signal Hill, it was a perfect day to maiden. Thanks to Peter and Kevin for the footage and Kev for the launch.

Some of the action from the Two Oceans Slope Soarers Black Eagle PSS event held at Signal Hill, Cape Town on 18 June 2016. Footage includes Malcolm Riley's Pilatus, Kevin Farr's maiden of his Cirrus 6000th production edition, Hans van Kamp's Lockheed T-33 and a Dassault Mirage 2000 jet. A great, well attended event, despite the freezing weather!
Walker Bay Radio Control Fly In

International fly in held in Hermanus at the Walker Bay Radio Flyers airstrip. Incredible flying by Martin Pickering from Spain, Tzu-Chun (Fergus) Lin from Taiwan, Steve and Matthew Bishop from UK and a few of our locals. Master plane builder Tony Tan was also in attendance.
Huge 1/4 scale Impala jet slope soaring

Martin Venn flying his huge 17kg 1/4 scale Impala off Signal Hill in Cape Town on Youth Day 16 June 2015. The wind was gusting at peaks of 60 km/h, so please excuse the shaky video. Unfortunately I could not capture the launch as I had to help throw the monster jet off the side!

Signals Slope Soaring welcome to 2015

Signals has had a great start to 2015 with unusual SW, W, NW winds for this time of year. Here is some of the action from the 3rd and 4th of January. Many pilots and many planes graced the slope, in particular a large display of Impala's.

Thanks. Yes, I intend to slope soar after a few more rounds on the field. There is a stunning hill/mountain in Cape Town called Signal Hill where I have seen guys soaring. Can't wait for the right wind conditions!
